Are GP Bikes honoring my used warranty?

I bought a 2006 Yamaha TW200 from GP Bikes (Whitby, Ontario) and they said they checked the bike and all was well. They also assured me that if anything wrong with the bike would be resolved.

After riding the bike for a while I noticed the engine was leaking oil. So I took the bike in and they said it's the base gasket, which they are willing to fix under the used warranty.

However, there are other issues with the bike. The bleeder valve on the front brake is broken and they are saying it's not under warranty. As well, the back brake is also a little squeaky, but I guess they won't cover that either.

I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on this bike in parts and labour when I bought the bike from a dealer for the reason of warranty if anything went wrong.

Kinda disappointed with the bike purchase now and GP Bikes.

Anything I can do. I was thinking about contacting the Ombudsman’s office.

What's a "while"? When exactly did you buy it and how many kilometers have you ridden?

And what does the written warranty state?

Re: GP Bikes not honoring warranty

.... and you expect them to fix your brakes because...... ????

Re: GP Bikes not honoring warranty

You bought the bike used early in July, i presume it snapped when you were bleeding the brakes. No-one knows if it was cross threaded by the previous owner. I can see both your side and GP Bikes side.

Fairest for both parties would be to split the cost of the repair 50/50.

Well, I bought the bike with the idea that anything that was wrong with it would be resolved. I didn't buy it to then spend hundreds more on fixing things. I guess this is the catch 22 when buying used, even from a dealer.

The thing is, I didn't bleed the breaks. I just not noticed it myself.

That wouldn't be fair, that would be generous of the dealer.

His "warranty" states powertrain until September 15th and that's exactly what he's getting.

You're way off base. GP bikes honored your warranty and that's all there is to it. The rest is your fault for ASSuming they would fix "everything" instead of only the things which they WROTE they would fix: the powertrain.

This thread is stupid.

Yep, they got me on the Power Train :/

Re: GP Bikes not honoring warranty

I have no warranty details, except a note on the receipt which states Power Train and it expires on Sept. 15, 2011.

A powertrain warranty covers your engine and transmission ONLY... in case of major failure where it either needs to be replaced/rebuilt then the warranty will kick in. A powertrain warranty does not cover all items on the bike.
Stuff like brakes, chain, etc... will not be covered as it is a ware and tear item.
Having bikes is a luxury and comes with the responsibility of upkeep and maintenance.

P.S. If your warranty expires in Sept. 2011, that means you had the bike for quite some time and you cannot hold the dealer responsible when things go, cause they will...

Re: GP Bikes not honoring warranty

I've only put a few hundred KMs on the bike.

I agree.

But sometimes it's better to turn a negative into a positive, even though they are not at fault.

GP Bikes has a large clothing/apparel business. I believe the OP is a new rider, which likely means him and his wife will drop a couple of g's on gear over the next few years.

Sure it'd be very nice of them to fix it, but they can't just fix peoples used bikes for free in hopes of getting them to come back in the future.

I think OP needs to realize that they did in fact honour the specified warranty. There is no negative here against GP Bikes and the thread title is a bold faced lie.

I agree. A bad experience and we probably won't go back their. This including bikes, clothing, etc...

They "got" you? Sounds like you're implying GP Bikes conned you in some way. GP Bikes is not the sort of dealer to do this. If you knew a bit about the owner and his wife then you couldn't be farther from the truth. I buy from GP Bikes. I trust them and have had great, great service and support over the years. And I dont spend thousands a year there either.

A lie would be a little extreme, I just think the OP had very high expectations and was disappointed when his expectations were not met.
It could happen to any of us.
