Arai vs Shoei

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this already but two additional things to consider when looking at helmets:

a) Noise reduction
b) Weight

Hard to really look into these features just by going and trying on a helmet so do the research. Anyone know which ones are generally the best for either of these considerations?

Weight I dunno but generally the more vents/air flow the more noise.

ya agreed. i only tried a bell once on the road and forgot how noisy it was but i feel that my shoei is not that quiet either. ppl have been saying that shoei has good noise reduction so i will have to assume that some other brands are even worse?

My Vortex is way too loud at highway speeds cause of all the ventilation. Need earplugs.

simple, get one of each.

I did :D

To be on the safe side get the most expensive one of each. That way you know you have the best ;)

It's not just price, it's about fitment. Along with that is weight and noise (reduction)

After that you pay for funky graphics and the name.
When you get to the 'higher' end helmets from either manufacturer, they offer a plethora of interchangeable interior pads. The shoei (x-11,x-12) offers 3 or 4 different padding sizes, the arai (corsair v, etc) offers 7-8 different interior combinations. You choose which is best for you, for a better fit, and that's why I chose those helmets.

^ I was being sarcastic in keeping with the OP's original post. lol!

Right. Missed the winky face.

here's a funny picture to distract everyone:

VCAN Helmets are best because they sell them at canadian tire

Hahaha.

But you know what, VCan helmets provided helmets for the SHARP UK site and they all did really well - 3-5 stars if I recall.

Considering that the bottom-end HJC (CS-R1) got one star and transfers all the load to your skull, that's a bit of alright.

I wanted a bit more high-end and really like my Shoei Qwest. If I had an occasional passenger I'd get one of those VCan's.

My girlfriend got a Shoei Qwest and she loves it. Good helmet.

I tried on a bunch of Arais, and I was going to get a Corsair V, but the Shoei did everything I wanted for half the price. There weren't any features that the Corsair had that the Shoei didn't (IMO).

Does anyone know where in Ontario sells Shark helmets? I really wanted one, but I didn't find anywhere that had them. Damn shame.

Competition cycle in Whitby had Shark helmets in last time I was there

This thread is terrible (as usual)

Arai makes different shell shapes and is very specific on their website as to which model is which, from round oval to long and narrow. Arai is one of the only companies with a helmet that truly fits people with a narrow head (like me).

The shoei rf1000 is a round oval fit, i never tried on the 1100 and dont know their line specifically so i'll say so! I've always been under the impression that all of their helmets are round oval.

The SHARP motorcycle test, by most sources is believe to be incredibly flawed, doesn't give any real information beyond a star rating and is of little value to anyone.

Pannon motorsports in sauga sells shark, or at least they did.

I heard arai's are made for people with pointy heads and shoei's are made for people with round heads. :D
That was true many years ago.Arai now has many models to choose from to fit everyone.Shoei is similar. They are both great. And so are the lesser brands like Scorpion.
Try on lots and buy the lid that fits best.

I have both brands of helmets: Arai Corsair V and Shoei X-Twelve

Arai Corsair V
pros: great fit, generous and comfortable, visor opening is not pre-set (keep open at any angle you choose), kickass designs, excellent air flow, bug screen built in the chin as an easy-pull
cons: not quite intuitive visor swapping mechanism

Shoei X-Twelve
pros: great fit, snug, super easy visor swapping mechanism, cool designs, excellent air flow
cons: pre-set visor opening

In terms of noise, both are about the same.

probably more feedback... but this is what I can think of at the moment.
** price points... they are about the same. I got them both at SBTG
