Approved Helmets?

I wasn't really sure where to put this, so if it gets moved, I understand. I was reading online (official site for Ontario) that I need an approved helmet to ride. Anybody know the requirements/brand of helmet that's approved? Links to good sites for cheap, but quality gear? Thanks in advance for your help

DOT Approved is sufficient. Kapscomoto has cheap helmets, however how much do you value your head ? There are helmets that are $50 and others are $600+. Often you get what you pay for.

DOT, Snell Foundation and CSA (if there are any left) approvals are acceptable in Ontario.
Strangely enough EC (European) standard is not officially approved, but I don't think you'd ever find a cop that knew or cared.

Lots of wrong info provided here. Helmet does not need to be DOT if it meets any of the other standards, and ECE is fine.

An amendment made to Highway Traffic Act Regulation 610 (Safety Helmets) has added the European helmet standard, commonly known as ECE 22.05, to the list of recognized standards for helmets worn by riders of motorcycles and motor assisted bicycles. This amendment comes into force on July 1, 2012.

2nd that Matt.
I have ridden with ECE helmets from the UK. Never had a problem.

Thank you for the link, I was not aware of the update.

There is also the argument that all helmets have to meet the same standards. I'm comfortable wearing last year's model helmet purchased at a discount for around $150. But that is just me. Some people will not wear anything less than a $600 helmet. If I were to give advice to you (and now, like others, I'm picturing talking to you, like I would talk to my own kids), I'd be comfortable with them wearing a $300~ helmet.

There isn't much difference in protection between helmets providing they are the same type, full face etc. Some of the cheap ones even provide better protection than some expensive ones. There is a difference in fit and finish.

Tri City cycle outlet store in Cambridge down by the old factory works on the west side of the Grand River. New year old stuff at huge discounts usually. Good ride for a outing!

My first helmet was an $80 Snell approved HJC.
You don't have to spend thousands for something you may have to toss within five years.
Fit and coverage are two of the more important considerations.

brand name helmets may be more likely to comply with safety standards, but not always.

DOT means that the manufacturer has tested the helmets.

You might want to check the sharp ratings that BRT posted.
