Anyone into gardening here?

It's more of a crack in the bark. Thanks for the link in case it gets worse.

I bought a bunch of seeds from the $1 seed store based out of Quebec online last year. Not many managed to germinate as I forgot about them until this year but...look at this. It's a tamarind tree seedling. Pretty proud of this. Theres a few others popping up too. I also managed to get a lotus flower to germinate and it has a few shoots and some good roots too.

We had something similar but deeper at the cottage. We cut the tree down.

When we were making the planks we got to that section and it was 70-80% rotted through. I figure another 1 to 2 big windstorms and nature would’ve taken it down for us…either onto our cottage or the neighbours.

This is the $1 seed store if anyone is interested. One Dollar Seed Store

These are genuine (unlike some sellers that can package any old seeds up) and this place also sells young plants too on another web front. I’ve bought winter hardy banana plants from him before. There’s a few different categories on the webpage, exotic flowers, fruits, vegetables and foliage. It’s cheap to get a selection of things and see what grows.

That’s pretty cool!

There are many seeds that require more than one cold season to germinate. So they might need to go through a cold season, then a warm season and then another cold season before they sprout during the second warm season. Some seeds can also remain dormant for many years and then something happens to create favourable conditions that did not exist previously and then the seeds all of a sudden will germinate.

I would love to know how your lotus plant does, keep us posted :)
Just started a patio pond this year with a water lily and some other marginal plants. Would be neat to have a lotus in another container pot.

The lotus is surprisingly the easiest one of the bunch. All you do is take one of the seeds and carefully cut off the hard shell at one end. Don’t cut anything else then put it in a jar of water. In a few days it sprouts. After about 10 days roots form. The seeds are also viable for years and don’t tend to “go off”. Right now I have three shoots from mine sitting in a glass of water. I’ll let it get a bit bigger and put it in my pond which is a bit smaller than yours. My pond has a Cana in too, a lilly and a tropical taro plant which is doing really well. I also got a giant sensitive plant that is a floating tropical plant who’s leaves fold if you touch them. It’s neat.

I was seriously considering buying some more lotus seeds and sprouting them because I saw the prices of lotus plants in online garden centres and they are nuts. I could make a small business out of it lol.

Yeah, lotus plants are quite expensive and I wasn’t sure if our growing season was long enough for it to flower, but wouldn’t mind trying out those $1 seeds and see where I end up.
I love sensitive plants, never knew they had a floating variety until I started doing research for my water garden. Where did you get yours from? Maybe I’ll try that as my floating plant next year instead of the water hyacinth.
My pond is really not that big, 2’x2’x4’, 100 gallon or so.

Moore Water Gardens was where I ordered everything from. Not that cheap but a good variety. Packaged well and everything arrived healthy and alive.

Car was getting covered in a sticky substance from the nearby city tree. Is there a know cause and solution? Someone mentioned it might be a bug infestation.

Aphids and other bugs do excrete honeydew liquids.

Solution is park in a different area.

I’ve used ladybugs to control some infestations, but they never stay on the plant!

@jc100 How did your lotus plant do last year? Did you try to overwinter it indoors?

Shane gave me info on magnolia blight that caused a neighbour's tree to drip blight poop on our car.

The blight could have been treated with numerous repeat expensive procedures but the neighbour just let it ride and the stuff died off after a few years. I trimmed the overhanging branches without making the tree too ugly.

Problem #2 was the wasps that dined on the stuff buzzed around all day.

If it's a city tree give them a call to see if they will fix the problem.

I’m ashamed to say it died. I sprouted it too late and when I put it in my pond the season was nearly over then the temp cooled down. I have a tamarind plant that survived and is now a mini-tree. I’m going to order some more interesting seeds so thanks for reminding me. That $1 seed store is great. I’ll order more tamarind, lotus and try my hand at a few banana trees although I’ve had really bad luck with those from seed. Much easier to divide plants.

Trial and error. Hopefully mine will be okay

I grow a few exotics and a bunch of pedestrian flowering plants. This is the first year I didn't start stuff under lights in March.

Set seeds for Brugmansia, castors, vintage and a bunch of bedding stuff today.

I tried over wintering bananas, passion fruit, and rosemary in the ground, only the rosemary made it.

I’m going to replace my tiny round rigid pond and build something a bit nicer and a bit bigger. I have a 6x8ft liner which will apparently let me build a 2x4x1.5 ft pond. Doesn’t sound massive but it will let me grow some dwarf water lilies and a few other things and I can put a plant shelf inside for papyrus plants or similar. I can also add an 8” waterfall lip too with something like this https://www.homedepot.ca/product/an...nch-1-inch-barbed-input-filter-pad/1000856788

I already had the liner and have a pond pump to feed the waterfall. The most expensive thing is the stone to build the pond walls. Around about $200 for something that looks pretty nice and will be a focal point in the garden with a fair bit of room for some dwarf plants.
