Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Ford finally made the Ranger a PHEV...but 28mile range... come on... you can do better.


The original Volt is rated for only a little more, and reality is, that covers the amount of driving the average person does every day - statically it’s clear, most people don’t drive more than 30-40km daily.

28 miles = 45 kilometers, which honestly is within the full electric drive range for most people accordingly, so I wouldn’t discount it out of hand, but it *will* suffer the same image perception the Gen1 Volt had where everyone laughed about “55km range, what a joke!” when in reality most of those same people never drove more than 55km in a day. We all know most people who buy pickups and SUV’s only use them as short distance commuters and grocery getters.

70 km range is in my head as the range that I'd bother plugging in for. That gives me a couple shorter days between charges or part of a long day. I don't know if I would bother hooking up the cord daily for <40 km of possible range. Especially if the vehicle was outside and charger was inside. Just not worth the hassle and wear and tear to have the cord running under a door and in my way. To bother plugging in, I want to save at least $5.

The above is just considering use. As MP said, if they put much of a premium on the Plug-in model, I'm completely out and I can't save enough fuel to ever break even. For some people with daily fully urban commutes that want a truck, the math may be more favorable.

I agree 100% with you, but my issue is simple....45km under IDEAL conditions. So in reality...45km = 30km in my experience. Same as my 100km range in Volt 2 was typically 70-80km (unless in bumper to bumper traffic).

So if a 45km range = 30km...sure it meets many people's requirements...but I would barely be able to make it to 401 / 400 from 403 / Mavis.

And I'm sure it'll be VERY expensive.
 
Does it come with a 120v charger? Given the shortish range it is likely a daily viable charging time option and could be a "plus" (or better put enough...) for anyone that does not or cannot wire in a 240v charger?
 
With the way the masses appear to be now favoring hybrids, I wonder how long before GM comes out with a Gen3 Volt.

I can't imagine paying for a Level 2 charger for that. 12 kwh is less than 10 hours plugged into 120V.

With something like this it gets plugged in anytime it is in the driveway or you don't rememberto do it. Our volt is plugged in when parked always even if we are only home for a little bit. It becomes second nature and takes no time.

Fair, but the stats are still clear that 50km is all most people need on a daily basis. Even 13+ years after the Volt was introduced.

It's perception that convinces people they need more. There's still people who yell online about never buying an EV until they can go 1000km on a charge and recharge in 60 seconds. If you presented them with that car tomorrow they'd find some other reason.

The charge thing isn't a big deal. Both of my cords have been under my garage door for years and years now. I have holsters for them on the front of the house. They're weatherproof. Plugging in when you arrive home becomes second nature and honestly you don't even think about it anymore after a while.

My buddy just ordered a Mazda CX70 PHEV. Claimed 45km range IIRC. It will be interesting to see what real world mileage is when he gets it.


Musk has just gone so far into full potato territory in the last 6 months I don't know how he's still being left in control of his own companies anymore.

other observations :

-the "Big 3" and others have big time scaled back their electricfication plans in favor of hybrids. (imagine if they put all their billions into Hybrids back in 2017 where we would be today?)

-the Chinese will take over the Electric market, everyone else should give up. (without govt invtervention, american makers are doomed)
