Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

I noticed the local Food Basics replaced their free charge stations with "flo" stations.

Not enough money in groceries?

Flo is a really common charging network in these parts. Personally I have no issue with paying for charging as long as it's reasonable. If someone's making money from it then probably someone is also paying attention to it and making sure that it actually works. With a free one, there's not much motivation to keep it working.

A charging station that I have to pay to use but which works, is better than a free one that hasn't worked for years because nobody can be arsed to switch the darn thing on ...

Ouch.

Less than a year back my investment guru suggested Tesla and I declined. I see Musk as a pied piper.

I have another meeting with my guru in a week or so. Any tips on removing a smug look from my face?

Further thinking on my ride in a friend's Tesla, particularly with the self drive feature. Honestly, anything else should be banned from Brampton. It's probably 98% better than most drivers.

There have been crashes and fatalities but how do the incidents per miles driven compare to human driven?

As it stands the self drive needs a human touch but it's so good I can see the temptation for a few (or more) people to multi task by catching up on their reading, snacking, grooming, texts etc.

That is an important question without a good answer. Theoretically, whenever AP is engaged there is a human actively standing by to help it. When a human is driving, normally they don't have active help available. That messes with any potential stats as you aren't comparing the computer to a human.

If Tesla got off their high horse and admitted that "auto-pilot" was really co-pilot and while driver was in control the co-pilot could help you, that all makes much more sense and should greatly approve safety.

My buddy took his Tesla on a self driving trip from his place (Winston Churchill / Eglinton) to my place (about 10km) and said it was good but it had him on edge.

Tesla is / was offering free FSD tests to current owners to drum up business for it.

Buddy said it’s nowhere near good enough to actually pay stupid money for it.

Why would anyone buy an ICE sportscar anymore

One thing I've learned in filtering here in Cairns on my rather weak CB300F is NOT to even think about trying to accelerate from the front row against any EV. We can use the bike lanes and it really helps in traffic to get ahead of the pack.....most times.
They seem ALL like to show off....or it's just normal driving for them.

If you have a lifetime of tinkering with cars in your garage, and a big investment in tools etc, most people won't get too excited about the better acceleration.
Edit ... Read the article and looked at the pics. People own exotics for a reason. The visual.
I've seen ugly before, and it looks just like that.
Like the tesla. If it was sold only based on looks, it would never have gotten anywhere.

The noise. Hyundai seems to have done well with fake engine noise but any I have heard before didn't have the visceral feel.

Also, for street use, you can't beat physics. A vehicle thousands of pounds heavier makes for ugly transitions. On sweepers on the track that matters less than traction changing in a corner in the street and the fat ev flies straight off the outside and you have no chance.

Lotus may be on track to change that

and this

This Electric Sports Car Weighs Just 1,300 Pounds

It turns out you can have a lot of fun in a 56-hp electric vehicle.

That one is available...
This one further out
The neat thing is that EV motors and batteries is the relatively low cost of entry for small companies.

Saw one on the way home yesterday (white, even). Ugly tree. Every branch.

Take away....and especially true for low carbon Ontario
It's estimated this second life for EV batteries could cut the carbon footprint of battery production by half.

At the finish line

Overall, every electric car will produce fewer emissions than its petrol equivalent, no matter where they are charged.
Even with an electricity grid that still uses some fossil fuels, electric cars have much lower overall carbon emissions, and that will continue to drop as the electricity gets greener.

Are electric cars really greener than petrol cars? We've lined up two SUVs and put them to the test

Whether you drive an electric car or are considering making the switch, you've probably been drawn into a discussion about whether they are really better for the climate. To save you from your next barbecue encounter, we have put two cars to the test.

A pretty thorough bashing of teslas Financials and operating methods (over 50 points addressed). Obviously to be taken with a grain of salt. Some of the points I knew of before, others I hadn't heard of.

"It's important to note that this is about life-cycle emissions, so we aren't evaluating other environmental or human rights impacts from battery production for EVs, and we're also not critiquing the oil industry in those areas for petrol cars. That barbecue debate is for another day."

I prefer to look at the whole picture including resource acquisition issues.

EV means mining the exotic materials and disposing of the after.

ICE has to look at fracking and projects like tar sands.
