Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

It's very likely temp foreign workers are necessary to get what is ostensibly a Korean-designed battery manufacturing plant up online. Where are you going to find the skilled labour (programmers, techs, lab workers) for making batteries on this scale in Canada?
with the number(s) being thrown around [1400-1600] that seems a little excessive. in automotive when we launch a new facility we send some of our own senior people down to train the locals.

obviously not apples to apples but i can't imagine why 'half' the employees need to be sourced from outside the country, but wtf do i know about batteries.
 

well some clarification as per reports the foreign temporary work is for construction only, not to run the plant and that's due to 'proprietary equipment'.

let's see what truths shake out.

If you're building a new plant in Canada I say you start training them on day one. Or give the EFFFING money back!!!

Boss only got to sit in Polestar 2 but found it smaller than he expected.

He test drove a Blazer EV RS last night and the sound that's now law below 40 km/hr (so zombie pedestrians can hear you when their eyes are glued to their phones) was truly annoying from inside the cabin. He said it was reverberating and a deal killer. The salesman said almost everyone is complaining about it and it's turning potential sales away ... here's hoping a software fix is in order.

Why when myself and others say that the CBC news is biased, does the CBC news double down?
Harper's free trade agreement has nothing to do with the plant agreement with Trudeau et al. unless you want to argue that the South Koreans know Canadian law better than the Canadian government.
Why not say "hey we messed up" and then start making things right? If we need a national news agency, then it must be non partisan.

Pretty sure the Liberals brought it up so maybe the opposition could reflect on their own past governance as debates in parliament so often do, we all know how they sling mud at each other in the house. For all we know having the trade agreement already in place was a sweetener for the battery plant deal knowing they could get staff here easier to get it up & running.

"The equipment installation phase of the project requires additional temporary specialized global supplier staff who have proprietary knowledge and specialized expertise that is critical to the successful construction and launch of Canada's first large-scale battery manufacturing facility," Danies Lee, CEO of NextStar Energy, said in the statement. "

The dust hasn't settled yet, the plants not even open so we don't know if the NextStar Corp will hold up their end of the bargain in the end or not. That the gamble you take with any deal regardless of party.

That's what I told him too. Overall though, he wasn't impressed with the ride & handling. He's used to European cars that are "tighter" in feel and felt it a step down in the Blazer EV.

Tell him to try the acura zdx on which is blazer/lyriq based.

I'm confident their engineers will have the ride and handling sorted out.

The fanbois still falling over themselves to apologize and just accept this as normal, however.
 
Costco has free nitrogen now beside the garage. Is it still baller if it's free?

PSA: If you decide to use the outdoor nitrogen pumps outside in the parking stalls, be aware that they won't operate unless there's a minimum pressure in your tires to begin with (don't know what it is). So if you had to top up your previously nitrogen-filled tires with regular air and are OCD, don't try to do a flush at these pumps.
 
A component "like the battery" could fail costings tens of thousands of dollars. Yeah, or the engine in a conventional car. Failures happen and it sucks when they do.
But an engine can be replaced at a much lower cost than $50,000, and just about any mechanic could do that job. This brings up an interesting point - with governments pushing manufacturers to go all electric, what's going to happen when these cars fail "down the road" and people are left with financially crippling repair costs?

I am mostly on the side that Tesla's lack of fit and finish is largely overblown though not incorrect. What does drive me nuts is that 90% of the Model X's I see have the door handles misaligned, if you're going to make a styling point between two panels, make sure that the lines match

A battery swap should be technically easier and faster than an engine swap. Coolant, powerlines and control cables and some mounting bolts. Access to a used or reman battery is probably not that simple right now. A crashed vehicle often has a good used engine. Does a dent on the battery pack mean it isn't safe to install as is?

OCD has costs. Purge three to five times from min pressure of fill station to max sidewall pressure, then bleed back to min pressure. If you are anal enough, measure oxygen percentage of exhaust air. Afaik, for street cars, they don't purge they just fill so there is some oxygen in them anyway. Probably race cars at a certain level triple purge or vacuum and purge to get rid of all oxygen and moisture. Now sure how much vacuum you can get away with on a mounted tire.

There's a guy in the Volt rebuiding community who has Gen1 battery swaps down to something like 2 hours total, out, in, and driving again.
