Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Nothing major so far. The GOM this morning indicated 386 km at 80% charge.

So I'm doing a little real-world range test. Since Wednesday morning (so 3 days of use since), 314.3 km since last charge (to 80%), GOM says 46 km range left. The last couple of days have involved some windscreen-defrost/defog in the morning. Driving was 93% of energy consumption, climate settings (interior HVAC) 7%, battery conditioning 0%. The GOM wouldn't have known on Wednesday morning that the weather was going to cool off like this, so it wouldn't have known to account for the 7% HVAC. I'd say the GOM is pretty darn accurate once it learns how you drive.

Not sure where the 170 km range is spec'd for the BMW E35. 418 km range is what is claimed for the Bimmer E35 and that number is pretty much on par with EVs costing $55K.
(Unless I have mis-read that press release )
Sorry...170km for the Mini EV that my buddy bought.

I'm an early adopter and if I had the funds I'd very likely snag one of these.
It hits all the features except range and a companion set of additional batteries slung on the pannier racks would fix that.

"but Tesla Semi"...

aside from not being out yet, its cab configuration is not suited to the European market ... too long.

I did not know that a standard for high-powered EV chargers intended for heavy trucks, has already been prepared. Evidently it supports charging rates of 1.25 MW.

"but hydrogen" ...

Yes, that's a lot of electricity to charge a truck-scale vehicle. But, the amount of electricity that it would take to generate enough green hydrogen to propel the same number of trucks the same distance down the road would be three times higher due to the inherent inefficiencies of the hydrogen route.

No one questions the magnitude of the problem at hand.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.

Of all the categories of vehicles tractors for heavy hauling might benefit from a swappable battery universe. EU might pull it off.
With the enormous electric train infrastructure already in place and shorter haul distances I'd think it might be an easier ask. They do like to regulate.
USB-c across the board.

As I've said a few times now, not sure I'd go full electric yet. It will be Hybrids for me for the foreseeable future

With the already exorbitant cost of electric cars, Can see this crap getting worse and negating any savings

If your default charging position is rapid chargers, an ev will be very costly. Home charging off peak swings the needle by an order of magnitude. Afaik, there are still quite a few free chargers around at malls, hotels, etc that can further drop your cost at the expense of convenience.

It is bs electric car charging needs to be billed by the kw imagine paying for gas by the second. Faster you can get it in the cheaper it is cars would have 6 inch filler neck diameter.

Sent from the future

Agree. You should pay by kwh. Maybe some time based minimum so if your car can only absorb 50 kw you dont grab the 300 kw charger instead of the 100. They need to have some incentive to move after you're full so time makes sense for that too. If you are charging above some threshold rate, per kwh makes the most sense.

That's a government of Canada issue and not an issue with the charger. Everyone, including Tesla wants to charge by kwh but apparently only utilities are currently allowed to in Canada.

said it before and will say it again... Tesla is the only choice if you do distance regularly and I don't see things changing anytime soon.

looks like the demand is slowing down. Tesla actually has new inventory and used prices have come down.

I'd have to agree as well. It's just a gamble with anything else unfortunately.

Concur. Until a similar charging network arrives or Elon opens it to the competition, Tesla is the only choice when it comes to range if you need it. Imo.

Hell I don’t need range but I’d still buy a Tesla just for the convenience as I can’t charge at home.

that won't last very long...

It's lasted for the 5 years we've owned EV's....lots of free charging out there. Businesses use it to attract typically affluent customers to their businesses - malls, shopping centres, big box stores, etc. And when people come and stay longer, they buy more.
Heck, within a 5 minute walk of my house there's 4 totally free L2 chargers. Have been free since the day they were setup and years later they remain.

The Petro Can network is getting better by the day and is quite high capacity. I remember seeing them on the side of the Trans Canada somewhere during my ride to Pickle Lake even.

Honestly, Elon is becoming a bigger and bigger d!ck by the day, so I have no interest in supporting him in any way, shape, or fashion.

I don't think he is becoming a bigger one, I think he is putting less and less effort into hiding it each day....
