Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Probably asked and probably answered, but I am lazy at the moment to go looking for the answer, and answer if you wish...

You lazy bum!

What does it cost in electricity to fill up the battery on the car ? 120 Volts or 220 Volts, and lets go with off peak charging times

11kWh (rounded up from 10.whatever kWh battery capacity of the Volt) multiply by the off peak Toronto hydro rate of 8.7c per kWh equals something around $0.96 cents rounded up to the nearest cent. That's from empty to full.

How far can you go on battery alone ? not looking for the best best, but on the average what can you expect.

I'd say a safe average would be 50km. Of course there are many variables.

How much to fill up with gas - 31 Litre tank I think, so if I am right about 32-35 bucks to fill up based on current fluctuating gas prices

I have only had to fill up my Volt once in the 17 days I've owned it, however at the time it cost me $44 for 32L

How far can you go on this tank of gas, if no battery power is used ? if that is even possible..

In 2013 models and above you have a HOLD mode which will "hold" the battery at it's current charge and let you use just the gasoline power. When Full the range shows around 550kms. I'm sure you can go further though.

Thanks....

I am wanting the simplistic numbers to tell a friend that his wife who goes from Mississauga all the way to the Centenary Hospital about 50 Km one way, day in day out would be better off if she went with a vehicle like the Volt/Bolt.

Slowbird answered all your questions spot on above. The only thing I would add would be the gas range - the range gauge always assumes about 550KM from the fuel side of things but based on my slightly over 5L/100KM experience from a few days ago (not that many posts back, look for the photos) I'm absolutely confident I could go over 600KM on gas.

As for the electric range, it's really hard to perfectly narrow down as there are so many variables on any EV - use of heat has a big effect on range, driving style, speed the person drives at, traffic, etc. In the non winter months, on a later Gen1 volt, 50KM is totally doable on electric alone, but I'd estimate between 3-5L of gas for the drive home (lets use 4L for the estimate, based on $1.20L or so), making the cost for a return trip about $5.75 or so.

The big eye opener is usually comparing the numbers against what many people are driving currently, particularly if it's not a very fuel efficient vehicle to begin with. If that person commuting from Mississauga to Scarborough is burning $20 a day in a gas guzzler currently, $5.75 will sound pretty awesome. On the flipside, if they're already driving a small econobox that might only be burning $8-$10 in gas, it's less attractive.

One thing is consistent however - EV miles are cheap and gas miles are on par with the Hybrid market, so you can have the best of both worlds.

Something like the Bolt may actually suit their needs perfectly however - 380KM range, so 100KM a day return to Centennial is absolutely no concern with plenty left over, and the benefits of cheap EV miles the whole trip....about $2 in off-peak electricity for the return trip. Comes down to if they're looking at the used market (lower $$) or are OK with the new market as they were looking for a new car anyways and the savings can more than outweigh the extra cost of an Ev.

You guys are being very conservative with that 50 km EV range ... but as stated, depends on a lot of variables but 75 km is easily attainable on a warm'ish day.

I totally agree, but I'm keeping in mind that someone who drives around with the HVAC set on comfort mode all the time and/or isn't driving efficiently (IE the stereotypical jackrabbit start on the greens, and brake-mash at the reds) isn't going to achieve potentially maximum numbers.

For example, I routinely get more EV miles than my wife on even the exact same drives because I'm more conscious about my driving, whereas my wife (although she's improving) pays less attention to efficiency.

I am in total agreement as well.

A million Thanks....the answers are really appreciated, and have already been forwarded to my buddy......

If your buddy has more questions lemme know, I can PM you my cellphone number and I'm happy to talk to him on the phone. Did a similar thing when I was considering the Volt initially and I learned so much in a short period of time.

Will do thanks...

Right now it was just to give him real life stats, from a average Joe user, when I was talking to him last and giving him the figures he was not believing me, the info posted here will at least show him I was not full of BS..

Not uncommon. This thread has been a great example from the start of all the misconceptions and preconceived notions people have about EV's.

The trip I posted on Saturday was with a bunch of friends and I got many of the same misconception questions again - will it do highway speed, what happens when the battery dies, etc etc.

The "will it do highway speeds?" question is the admittedly the oddest one I keep getting. Apparently one of the bigger misconceptions is that modern EV's are basically glorified golf carts that are really only for around town use.

The Volt would look out of place on a golf course. That's what KX500's are for.
