Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

There’s nothing particularly proprietary about transmission coolers, there are tons of universal ones including some decent stacked plate (better than tube and fin) options on Amazon or Rockauto for under $100. You just cut the steel line leading to the existing cooler somewhere, flare the ends, and add it in stream.

Despite some websites like that listing proprietary options with what looks like custom bent tubing and such, I don’t think such actually exists either - it’s probably just a universal one in the end.

I don’t think that I would need to bother with one with a thermostat for the volt as I believe it has a circulation pump that controls flow manually unlike a traditional transmission that always has flow. A thermostat is typically only really needed if you’re putting a grossly oversized cooler for situations where it’s only needed sometimes (heavy towing / plowing) but may actually over-cool the tranny at other times.

/dad was a transmission mechanic all his life. I picked up some things. ?

If you have the means of watching trans temperature while driving, do that for a bit first to see what it does. We don't live in Arizona, and we don't live in the Rocky Mountains.

I agree and plan to do exactly that, but if it starts to climb much above what I’ve now marked as a baseline (it was clear when the pump started and temperatures stabilized there like a rock) I’ll be adding that cooler ASAP. A $100 cooler is almost assuredly cheaper than a new tranny. ?

Speaking of brakes, every week or so I actually try to coast the car to a stop in neutral JUST to fully use the brake pads without any regen.

I do the same thing although it doesn’t seem to have much effect, especially the rears.

Maybe someone can answer....

is the Gen 2 Volt regen much better than G1?

I remember driving it and didn’t find the regen braking to be all that aggressive on the Gen1.

Around 1990-2000 when rear discs started becoming common, many ICE cars required complete replacement of rear brakes surprisingly often. One stop a week won't hurt, but I hold out little faith for rear discs in an EV.

They dropped a few balls there. The charging network errors should be an “all hands on deck, we need an OTA out to the cars inside the next 7 days!” thing.

Saying “we’ll fix it sometime later this year” all while new adopter EV owners deal with the results is insane.

I usually drive in L but didn't notice much difference when we were looking. The regen hand brake on the wheel is nice in the gen 2 for aggressive regen.

I use that hand brake on the wheel for about 80% of my braking. Just use the foot to come to a full stop or when needing more braking force. Not sure if using the hand brake on the wheel so much is a bad thing.

I used to drive in L but stopped after a month or so. After reading more about using L, I think I will go back to that and see if there is a difference. Thanks!

Thanks guys. Looking more likely that we are going to be working in Scarborough and the 401 traffic will probably allow me to do the full 100km round trip in the Volt with no issue. Especially on the way home in traffic. Winter might be a 80/20 in EV/gas.

FWIW I commuted everyday from Winston Churchill /403 to Brimley/Lawrence and my range ran out every day - even in the summer. That commute was 110km round trip, so yours may vary. In summer, I was getting around 100km/battery, so it would come close. In winter the range was around 75km and 35km gas. I keep the cruise control set at 104km/hr and also use minimal heat in the winter, but turn up the heated seats and steering wheel heat.

That’s basically what mine will be. Mavis/403 to Kennedy/401.

Awesome - you might be under the 100 then for all your summer driving.

The hardest thing for me is going that slow on the highway.

Does volt have radar cruise? If I was doing that commute that would be really close to a need.
I think it was part of the Premium packages, but not available on the base trim. I have the base trim and since I have never used that before, I don't even know what I'm missing.

Me neither, but since he is shopping for a pure commuter to drive through traffic, I wouldn't go without it. It's like winter tires, if it saves you from one bump over the lifetime, it paid for itself. The hundreds of hours of relaxed commuting are just a bonus.
