Amazon to lay off 10,000 employees.

I'm starting to feel like I'm wasting away in gov't work lol.

Kudos to those that know how to play that game and can run businesses on their own! Maybe I could...but I've never actually been forced to.

Small sidetrack...my dad is a great contractor and I asked him 'how did you learn all this stuff?'

His answer was simple 'I had to. Either that or starve. So I figured it out.'

A) In private industry, stock sitting on the shelves is money sitting on the shelves. If it gets written off it becomes a loss and reduces taxes. If the stock is an obsolete product, dumping it makes sense.

B) Large companies don't have the flexibility to run flea markets so selling the stuff for pennies to a discount / salvage outfit puts it on the market, freeing up storage space costing $15 per square foot per year.

C) Win, win, win if the stuff was purchased far enough back that no one remembers who signed the original P.O.

Mezzanine: Storage place for executive mistakes. See "C" above.
I'm in the process of offloading obsolete goods right now - once a year we clean house just before we do our annual physical inventory. Typical storage costs of a skid is around $18/mo in the GTA, more if it's in a contract warehouse. It's not a good when inventory has a birthday.

Mezzanine: That's where our management team stores our off-season tires!

Same :(. Got through over 6 certificates this year so I can try to move back to private but hiring has slowed down to a crawl.

FAANGS have been hiring like crazy for the past few years and this have had a domino effect on the entire IT industry. Amazon is only cutting from their devices, which makes sense to me. 10K for Alexa was just nuts, MS & Google used to hire to keep the competition from getting the resources and throw them at projects that are shelfed or completely discarded. I've been in Silicon Valley since 2000 and still go back and forth there, and there is always slack. And every department head is always itching to get ride of few people even at the best of times. But anyone with the Amazon/MS/Meta creds should be easily able to get into wherever they want as we still have tons of openings in NA market.

IT hiring have been brutal in the past few years also. The salaries have ballooned up 30% or more in the past year alone for your run of the mill Dev. These things are always in cycle, and if I was looking to trim the fat, this is the time to do it. Hopefully this brings back the balance to the market.

Also, these cuts are generally in the B2C markets for now, the B2B market (Oracle/SAP/etc) are doing well and are looking to add to their headcount. But, these things have a way of making everyone on edge and holding on to whatever they got.

From a VP at a fortune 100 company few days ago: "It's about time that millennials learn about reality"

Just curious... what is he delusional about?
fairly certain it's a joke.

if you play video games, all the "kids" are saying similar stuff anytime someone makes a comment they don't like.

Are these useful certificates? OR is it the same junk I see on my LinkedIn every day?

'I completed course XYZ with LinkedIn'

Congratulate me everyone! I did a 10min online course!

Delusional old boomer.
Delusional why? This and the younger generation have literally had ZERO issues with the economy recently.

It's always gone up, and they don't think it can ever go down.

I'd say the delusion is with the generation thinking that nothing can go wrong, and everything is always positive...and they're all special because mommy told them so.

I just finished a 12 hour HR course on harrasement, sensitivity, inclusiveness and acceptable office behaviour. Called a deadbeat client a miserable sack of goat turd and told him he could eat a bag of ***** , less than an hour after hitting the course complete tab. My receptionist said I may want to look over the course outline again.

I just told my direct report to 'GFY' and now I have met my quote for the day.

I sure hope he's got a good sense of humour...or I'll be looking for a new job by the end of the day.

@Jampy00 will do!

Amateurs.

Until you put up naked pictures of underage cartoon girls as your Zoom background for all company-related calls, I can't even take you guys seriously...

Oooh, they gave you the long course.

You're either old, or your words/actions damaged somebody at the office. If neither, you might be a masochist.

We had to have the entire company, including the ownership group take the training , due to new provincial workplace legislation and our insurer . Mostly our insurer.
I work in an industry that is 25yr behind most and peaked 100yrs ago.
Our idea of new tech would be flush toilets at the warehouse .

After Musks brutal round of cuts and subsequent "work long hours or don't work here", he sent an email:

"Early on Wednesday, Musk had emailed Twitter employees, saying: "Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore."

The email asked staff to click "yes" if they wanted to stick around. Those who did not respond by 5 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday would be considered to have quit and given a severance package, the email said."

Apparently many people had had enough of him and were leaving. He cut ~50% and now quite a few more are leaving. Can the workforce collapse to the point twitter dies? Will he be able to bring in enough new employees to keep it up? How much would those new employees cost compared to the old employees? New employees know they are signing up to work long hours for a madman and will probably expect compensation to the moon.

Anyone else heard of a company giving all employees two business days to respond or they would be presumed to have quit? How many were on vacation/in the hospital and missed the deadline?

Elon thinks by giving them the ‘option’ of responding that’s he’s not responsible for any severance or anything as such.

This is nothing more than a man child / dictator forcing his will on the employees.

You get a small portion that will love him regardless…

And you’ll get a bigger portion that will put up with his poo until he fires them…and then they’ll collect their severance.

He seems to be on route to drive the entire ship into the ground…maybe he wants a 44B write off so he doesn’t pay tax for the next 10+ years.

🤷🏻‍♂️
