So... 'Book a return flight Vancouver > Toronto a few weeks ago for my oldest to come home over xmas... Dec 20 to Jan 2.
Flight to YYZ goes as scheduled. Great.

Dec. 31 7pm get an email advising the flight back to Vancouver 9am on Jan 2 is canceled and you're rebooked for 9am on the 3rd. 24hrs... okaaayyyy. We'll deal.

0200... that's 2AM today, the 3rd. another email from Westjet...
Flight canceled.
Rebooked for a flight leaving at 22:45 which will drop you in Edmonton. Where you'll wait ten hours for your next flight on to Vancouver...

Had to book her on an AC fight for 10am as she's late enough..lol

and of course... you think I can get through yo WJ to cancel... nope.

Ugh.... first world problem, but... damn man I'm out hundreds of money

They're aluding its due to crew shortages due to of course... covid


I normally avoid AC, but.... at 6am I was able to book a 10am flight that took off on time with zero problems.

I went to terminal one to see if I could get some sassifaction at the WJ kiosk....
No deal... there must have been 400 people lined up trying to sort their itineraries out

Wife's been on hold with WJ for over two hours now
 
Over 4500 flights cancelled around the world with 2500 in the US alone this past week. That all has a knock on effect too on other flights. It’s a ****** situation but what are you going to do? Cross fingers and hope this is COVID’s last blast. I have no travel plans until April at the earliest.

I plan to fly to Saskatchewan in June for some gopher shooting....
All this is making me reconsider just driving again...
I quite enjoy the road trip, but... flying just saves so much time...
I think cuz airplanes go faster than cars.
 
Right now AC is outshinning Westjet , only because AC has bigger talent pool to draw from. Think flts are hard now ? dont go anywhere in two weeks .

Buy a plane? Best of both worlds. If it's normally you or you plus one, you can pick something up for much less than the price of a truck.

A friend of a friend was running a classic plane west as a ferry flight (Harvard iirc). He left Ontario in the morning and made it to Whitehorse the same day. Quick stops for fuel and chase the sun. Coming back takes longer if you don't want to fly in the dark.

Cathay Pacific whacked all cargo flights. Many were full of PPE. AC is picking some up. If AC decides that is more profitable than passenger flights, expect AC passenger service to drop off quickly. They are already hurting from positive/symptoms/close contact.
 
So here’s the (mainly ignored) reason…the trend is what matters. The graphs are the same for the US and the UK.

Well... an update.

After 5 hours and 40 minutes on hold with WJ...
Return portion of fare, actually a bit more I think it works out to 50% of the total round trip fare... refunded to my Cc.
Also... full refund on checked baggage fees that were pre paid.

Funny.... Agent said there was a 6pm direct flight today they could have put her on....
I'm like Wtf?... why didnt you then instead of the convoluted itinerary you rebooked her on..?

No answer... Lol

I've had so many bad deaings with AC that they're my carrier of absolute LAST resort.
Hell... my last sunny vacation they lost my luggage during a non stop flight from Antiqua to Toronto...
I watched my bag get loaded on our plane...
Got to tdot and... it failed to make it to the carousel.. lol.

Lots of other stories from family friends of AC eff ups...
In any case... Kid made it back to vangroovy... She said there was a WJ pilot on her flight too.. lol.
You know things are bad when employees have to fly on the competition...
