Advice to get business going

Bottle country air. Sell it to city folk.

On a more serious note, what is MIL up to? A friends mom loved to make pies. Mom would make 2+ pies a day. The only way to use them up fast enough was selling them so they opened a pie stand. Money bought more supplies. You could grow the fruits to go in the pies.
MIL is doing well, not sure if she has any business ambitions... LOL

I have to be careful what I choose to do as I still work full time in Georgetown, so anything that requires a lot of attention may not be suitable.
Also every weekend will be spent cutting grass... lol

I have my own Carpentry Business here in Guelph and the number one thing my clients always ask me for is a painter. Its hard to find reliable ones. Would that be a good avenue for him?

@Jampy00 What about renting storage space?

Is that meant for me? The first part?

Or Jampy?

Painting is very hard on the body everyone I know who tried it got out.

Oh I know. Been doing it over the last 20+ years but not non stop.

My buddy’s a painter since high school. He’s done very very well.

Had a post here earlier in regards to storage, the challenge is that my home is also on the property, so I felt not the best avenue.
I'd like to set up a business here that I can work part-time, a little extra $$$ is all I'd expect or wish for...

Beekeeping...decent money in honey.

If you have zoning that would allow it , Id store RVs and boats outside in the back 40. I’m amazed how far away people will go to find a parking spot that is not “GTA” priced . They drop in the fall , pickup in spring . Not much traffic and it’s outside .

Ahh fair point.

If you're tech savvy you could set up a little 3D printer farm. Buy a few small ones, connect them up to your wifi network and you can control them from your laptop or phone while you're not even home. You could print moto parts, tool stuff, DnD characters, etc etc. You'd need a climate controlled tent though.

Beekeeping is a great idea too, you can sell the honey at the gtown farmers market, and rent the bees out to the farmers(Does Allison's still exist?) for polination.

Mushroom farm, hydroponics? A big money maker is horse boarding. Especially if you have space for outdoor paddocks.

I was thinking of 3D or a small CNC for projects. Might be something worth looking into in the future.

The trick with both of those is to identify small parts that there is a demand for. Selling to businesses will push it outside the realm of a hobby as they will be demanding. Building an inventory and shipping out figurines or frames for collectable cards or . . . can be profitable and fit into your schedule.

My buddy has 7 3D printers in his basement at home, makes a nice little side hustle from it (70-90k/year) just selling stuff on Etsy.

Personally I would've NEVER imagined small trinkets would sell so well....but hey, good for him.

So I second the recommendation for a 3d printer / CNC shop.

That is kind of my plan, but I'll start much smaller.
Scroll saw and patterns to make some small wood crafts. Post and sell online (As I ship packages out everyday anyways)
People love nick knacks & crafts plus they enjoy browsing while sitting on the toilet... it's a win / win!
Not looking to make a living out of it, but just something to occupy my spare time.

Haha yes I know of the PC doing deliveries. I'll just hit up some of our local posties and give them some Lemoncello and a stack of envelopes to dump into the condo buildings on their routes

Good luck with that.

OnlyFans.

70-90k/year is a side hustle??

Spoke with dad and this decision is a go. Got some old business cards we found, and he's asked me to create a small / simple flyer.

I'll start handing them out this week in the evenings in the local area. He told me to see if I can get any starter clients, and he'll reach out to his network of those that are still alive.

I'm thinking starting small with some painting, some trim work, etc. Nothing too major.

For now we'll focus on people that want contractors in the house on weekends as I know lots of people complain about having to stick around during the day so a contractor can show.

Any recommendations on advertising this? Tips on reaching out stores / restaurants that need painting after hours? I know there used to be tender sites for different companies / municipalities but those require heavy bonding / insurance / financing etc.

Also as some recommended here earlier, condos would be a great source of clients but need to figure out a way to advertise in the condo directly.

Majority are under lock and security, so I'm sure there's opportunities there too.
How busy does he want to be? Depending on how much he charges he could get swamped.

The thing that would bother me is expectations. Dirty fingernails doesn't mean working for minimum wage.

A friend does small carpentry jobs but is always getting screwed financially so referrals work better.

There is a massive need for honest fair workmen for small jobs. The workmen need honest fair clients.

I'm sick of Toronto traffic so would want to set distance limits. Spending a half day driving across Toronto and back to price a job or retrieve a tool isn't on my fun list.
