ADV fad

Exactly
I highly doubt there is anyone on this site that would go everywhere I go on one bike that isn’t an ADV bike. I mean you could you just wouldn’t.

Wife more comfortable on back of ADV bike than a sport-tourer and bonus is that ADV held more stuff in luggage. ADV was also more comfortable for me and I love the flat bars on the road. SUV of the road-bikes.....sure, but I'm usually having more fun and much more comfy than the "standard" bikes on my day trips.

I’m guilty I fall right into the stereotype. Well close.
Its no GS but it’s all blinged out with anodized bits and guards and luggage and a GPS with all the coffee shops locations preset. Even got me some of that fancy Klim gear now. Hope the fad doesn’t die out. I Don’t know what I’d do if I had to sell all this to go back to the Harley lifestyle 😂
 
Any bike capable of the following is a bike for me:

350km/tank min
Super comfy for all day 2up
Ergonomics and design allows for 12hrs a day, repeatedly
No problem to ride hard packed trails and rocky forest roads
Bike can keep up reasonably well with smaller more nimble bikes in the twisties
Too ugly/heavy to get stolen.

Let the manufacturers build more I say... there's lot's of sheep looking to be assimilated.

Agree 100%.



With the increase in adv models to choose from, what has been lost really? Maybe 600/1000 SS bikes but, plenty of cruisers, standards, adv of various displacement and price ranges.

Adv bikes are not my cuppa at the present time but, I’m sure I’ll come around in a bit. For now, I prefer sport touring or cruiser touring bikes.

I’ll save the gravel roads and billy goat trails for a dedicated dirt bike/enduro towed to its location in a truck bed or trailer.

I rarely do two up and never all day. But Ive got the rest I’d say.
 
On Sunday I was heading up to Algonquin for my second weekend in a row.
Instead of taking 35 all the way I took a couple detours. Not knowing what I was going to find for roads. One was gravel but I found a road heading north off 118 called Kushog rd. OMG 😱 it was epic and awesome in every way. It was paved but in rough shape. I could think of a better bike to be on other than my trusty steed.

If you haven't already, next time you can start at Deep Bay Rd, then take Bobcaygeon Rd, then Kushog Lake Rd.
Bobcaygeon Rd is another good one for your bike.

If I ever opt for something dirt or gravel compatible, it needs to be light enough to pick up easily. I'm on board with the concept of a light dual-purpose bike, but not a land barge. Weighing <250 lbs is a better feature than having 150 horsepower...
 
I'm on the fence about ADVs. Mine is a lightweight, 380lbs. I bought it for fuel efficient commuting and I equipped it as such (heated grips, hard bags, fog lights, aftermarket comfy seat). I bought it over the DRZ400 because it's modern and it handles better on the highway, very sport-tourer like. While it can do the goat-paths its suspension and ergos aren't great for the job. It was a compromise. Sometimes on trails I think I made a mistake, but at 130km/h on the highway I'm sure I made the right choice. A 600lb+ ADV? Not me. The idea you could go off-road with one of those is a triumph of clever marketing over dumb consumers. However, this is the decadent West, so we must be decadent.
