900,000 students coming in…

Doggie's crew just dropped some new high school rules for 2024 & 2025.

Sep 2025
  • a new financial literacy course requirement. Kids will learn and be tested on creating and managing a household budget, saving for a home or asset, and the basics of financial fraud protection. 70% grade is a graduation diploma requirement.
Sep 2024,
  • Need a Gr 9 or 10 Tech Education Credit to graduate.
  • EQAO math test becomes 10% of a student's final math mark.
  • Boards get “clear expectations" for guidance and career education. Career coaching for grade 9 and 10 students in public schools supported by coaches working in high-demand sectors.
  • Before applying to the Ontario College of Teachers, prospects will have to pass the Math Proficiency test.
  • Reintroducing a "modernized" home economics program that teaches practical life skills. Cooking and understanding good nutrition; basic skills like changing a tire, sewing a button, signing a check, knowing how to shop on a budget and applying basic first aid.

How many millennials know what a cheque is?

And how many millennials know the difference between check (verb) and cheque (noun)? Obviously not the one that wrote the curriculum update bullet points for the article.

On that note, most americans calling a bill a cheque is very confusing.

I find myself wishing every day that should have been the career path JT went down. Good spot to learn some managerial skills.
To protect itself most large companies make managers highly attentive to identifying and stopping sexual harassment and assault.

Considering millenials are 28-43 years old, almost all of us know what a cheque is.

We had to use them to pay our rent not too long ago.

What's the new one? Jenifer X or something? I can't keep track of all the pigeonholing and compartmentalizing these days.

I know nothing about this, but what is the point here? Why does an english or history teacher need math skills?

I totally in favour of a life skills / financial awareness class . They could help so many people. Payday loans are ( should be ) criminal. Don’t think because mom and pop have an ok house they have anything to share at home . It could be paycheck to paycheck.

Why does a driving instructor need to be able to read road signs? He's teaching driving, not reading.

The three R's. Basic education to get thru life.

IIRC it's about grade 5 level they are being tested on. I haven't tried to find a sample test. Even english teachers need to award marks, add/subtract and potentially calculate percentages. Sure, computers can do those things but if you have no fundamental understanding, you probably won't notice if you get garbage out (most likely due to garbage in).

A little hyperbolic. One has a direct relation to the ability to perform the function, the other is tenuous at best.

I would be very curious what level they are testing on.

I'm not outright against this just questioning what basis they see to implement it. Way too many adults lack the ability to do basic math, not sure how this would change anything.

Note, I say all this as someone who grew up in a Slavic household where not being able to do math was not an option.

Edit: Found this video with some example questions,

A bit further along than basic math

So the can add up test scores properly?

Seriously, educators should have a standard level of proficiency in a lot of things, not just math. It’s particularly important for elementary school teachers as they are teaching all subjects.

There are a lot of teachers in rural schools that teach multiple subjects.

An what does it say about an education if they’re not smarter than an 8th grader?

While I am sure it will be full of scams and little care provided to those who need it, the *numbers are at least somewhat reasonable.
Sadly the flood gates are open wide with little hope of closing them now.

*Canada will admit more than 15,000 caregivers as permanent residents in the next two years, as part of Canada’s overall immigration targets, according to IRCC.

Whenever the Libs face defeat, they roll out a barrage of hail mary and poison pill programs. The Hail Marys are giveaways to appeal to various small sets of interest groups/voters, the poison pills are giveaways that will be tough for a new gov't to roll back.

Remember Wynn's generous Hail Marys to PSUs - paying union hotel and staff costs during arbitration? Then the poison pill multi-million dollar severances she gave Hydro Execs as she was packing her kit to leave? Same thing is going to happen with the Feds.

The big talking points this year have been food insecurity, housing, and tent cities. If an alarmingly increased number of people are worried about putting food on the table and not having an affordable roof over their heads, who the hell are these 15,000 people actively looking to hire "nannies"?
