600cc Sopersport Life expectancy

Thanks everyone... I'm going to be using it for work Mon- fri from March - November and the occasional weekend rides and occasional Tim Hortons POSE downs

That's what my wee gets used for. Before that it was an R6. Figure I put around 700ish km a week commuting and then 300~500km on the weekend playing. Do that for on average 35 weeks a year....the km's add up real fast.

In extreme situations that is the exact case. Most drag cars run there best passes when they are on the verge of blowing up. Reason being less friction.

With a street machine all the carbon buildup on the valves and in the combustion chamber would not be beneficial for power production.

58k on my GSX-R600 - No issues yet...

FWIW, when I first bought my bike, i thought it was going to "blow up" after 25k. This was faulty logic on my part - I foolishly believed that high revving engines = high wear/tear and less life.

Bikes are different from cars. These engines are much different from a street car and are built around the concept of being raced.
If they are well taken care of (regular oil changes, regular period maintenance) it WILL BE FINE. Don't over think it.

My mechanic (Ace Mototech) told me he had a customer who just picked up a used late-model 1000cc SS and brought it into the shop (1000 kms on it - YES 1000). Previous owner never opened it up past 6000 rpm so the secondary injectors (or something of the sort) had seized. Go figure.

aren't you talking about the one you sold to Frankie

I know of a CBR600 in Tennessee with well over 200,000 MILES on it.

Someone posted a pic of the odometer on their zx10r with 99,999 miles on it and then at 100,000 miles (turns out the odo has the extra digit!)

I know of a cbr125r with over 60,000 km on it.

Most are crashed or the owner gets tired of it before they wear it out. Others are abused or neglected to a very premature end.

Nope, mine had just over 40,000 km when I sold it. There's another one out there with more than 60,000 km. Rider is on this forum, too, but I'll let him speak up on his own if he wants to.

Theres a guy on the BMW F800 forum upset because his alternator crapped out at 150,000+ miles!

"Lost my alternator this morning at 158,920 miles.

Both of my F800S bikes had their alternators fail just before 160,000 miles. It may be a good idea to consider replacing your alternator around 150,000 miles, based on my experience. If I still have this bike when it turns 300,000 miles, I am going to replace the alternator has preventative maintenance.

Ride safely.

Lou"

Several guys on the forum have 70-90k Miles on their bikes and still running strong.

Interesting logic......so they are race engines but last a long time?

You can go to any forum and find blown engines in bikes that were well taken care of.

Heres one of those Hondas that go forever of our very own forum!

"My crank didnt actually need machining i got very luck i stoped riding as soon as my oil light started flashing at idle i new i was loosing pressure dropped the oil saw the shavings i measured the crank and it was good to go i also plastiguaged it appon install just to be sure and it was bang on/.It had about 74,000kms when she went, I have TONNS of pictures of the build progress i will post some more later on"

I cannot stress proper maintenance more than anyone else here, but if this doesn't prove it to you, I don't know what will...

Cousin's bike at 14xxx km, was just put on the road this season:

My bike at 56xxx km, in its 4th season on original chain and sprockets, ridden in all conditions and months. Both are Ninja 250's

What does he use for chain lube? Or did it not know you were supposed to lube it? :(

Not what i was getting at...
I would venture a guess that motorcycle engines are built to sustain higher rev's than lets say.... a corolla.

Obviously the harder you push (racing) the higher the wear and tear. I doubt 10% of the bikes on kijiji have seen track time.

Sure, they give up long term durability for performance, unless they are using exotic materials......which they arent. You may have noticed that a Corola makes similar power to Supersport.......and yet the bike engine and trans weigh 150 lbs, but the cars weighs 500 lbs. Everything on the bike engine is more heavily stressed, things like compresion ratios are much higher, cylinder walls much thinner etc etc.
If you know of the enabler that gets the bike engine around those issues I would be very interested, but most supersports come with a one year warranty, vs 3 to 10 for cars........Coincidence????

Either way, I'll differ to the more experienced on the subject..
