51st State? Or not.

Canada becoming the 51st US state is a hypothetical scenario that has always been political fiction, but lately, it's been taken a little more seriously.

There isn't a lot of traction for the idea... but could that swing? Some Greenlanders, including their leader, suggest a break from Denmark's colonial influence is worth a thought.

Were closely tied by geography, trade, and a strong historical alliance, we speak the same language and have more cultural similarities than differences. We do have differing political systems, social policies, and cultural priorities.

The concept is still a bit far-fetched.

Would you stay or would you go?

Talk to the employees of Canadian companies that got taken over by big USA. The workers often got treated like trash because, you know, the Americans are smart and know everything.

I don't think MX would make sense for Americans - it would be another Puerto Rico except poorer.

Something like the EU could be appealing individual countries no borders call it the Canada USA national Trade zone..

Hard no and I am a bit disappointed Canadian media is not hounding Gretzky for a comment.

My cynical side remembers when trump first ran for prez and was mocked. Then it happened. He got the boot and returned with an even stronger win.

Not even before taking office, he’s talking like this is a possibility and the media is feeding it oxygen.

As much as I know there is absolutely no political reasoning to garner any traction, my fear is the media will hammer the cons about it more than any questions about their policies. And the other parties will keep the media concerns on point to avoid them having to answer to how they would run the country.

The medial already has PP labelled “like trump” as if that was a negative thing and I’m sure PP didn’t mind. But, now they will say PP is Trump’s best friend and will make a back room deal and the other parties will feed the fire when there isn’t any smoke.

This is the unintended consequences of a political leader trolling that will have real impact to our election.

I hope I’m wrong. Not because I fear becoming a part of USA but, because the side show will overshadow the true issues our country needs to address.

Grew up in both already, overall it's not as night and day as the responses seem to indicate.

Potential Open Issues-
Gun crimes
Health care

If they could be resolved we would probably be quite comfortable.

The US has come quite a long way since the 70s, when my parents would travel the world and would hand out Canadian flags for Americans to sew on their backpacks so they could avoid issues abroad.

Overall I'd be up for a merger and would stay...until retirement which i plan on leaving for anyways.

Make the US the 11th province of Canada. They can keep Idaho and Kansas and Trump can be king of whichever of those he chooses.

The Americans will finally have a longer life expectancy and we’ll get to moan about more immigrants. Win-win.

Where is Chamberlain with a bogus peace treaty , while the tanks were queuing up for Poland ? Putin won’t roll into the Ukraine. China would never take a run at Taiwan. Trump is the new blowhard but a measured response is required.
