2022 Day Trips!

I thought maybe I was only one here who would buy an ugly bike because it had other redeemable features.
I'm referring to my 2006 FZ6. It was ugly but did everything well. Sadly the bike had almost no character.
Former KLR owner here... Calabogie area around 2007:

Took this week off for new baby…considering it’s supposed to be nice and warm I’m hoping to get in at least 1 solid ride day.
Congrats buddy. That's great news.

Meh….lol. Right now she’s a ball of cries and poop.
One day you will be wishing those were the biggest of your worries.
Mine are 12 and 8... great kids but sometimes I wish a poopie diaper was all I had to deal with...

You back from the ride or checking in from the road?

Just drove in and eating.

1038km.

They kept going but I checked out. Got kids to put to bed.

You did well for the kms total.

The FZ1 will be my bike for this summer - been riding VStroms for 14 years and time for a change! Just need some rim stripes and better decals, but it won't do much for this ugly duckling. One day I will own a bike I actually like looking at.

Headed up to my Mom's cuz I'm such a good sun.

Now just need to hit up some twisty roads, but the Corbin seat can't get here soon enough and the Solstice ride is going to kill me. At least the previous owner did a bang up job getting the suspension dialed in, so this bike rides likes it's gliding over the road and overall it's so much more fun than the VStrom 650.

I’ve always thought the FZ1 was a good looking bike. I lusted after one for years.

How do you find the riding position compared to the Wee?

From yesterday's Solstice ride I'd say the knee bend is slightly more aggressive than the Strom, but it's not that bad at all. I'm 5'11" for reference.

Highway pegs would be a nice to have and there are good mounting spots on the front part of the frame just above the frame sliders. The FZ1 also has risers on it, so that also helps maintain a slightly more upright position. The air flow is very clean with zero buffeting on the helmet. I might have broad shoulders, because the mirrors don't let me see behind me at all, and I do like to be able to see that a bit easier like I could on the Strom.

For riding on the highway, I really need to get a taller windscreen, because long days like this are way more fatiguing than the Strom, by the wind hitting me mid chest for the whole day. For rides up to 6 hours it's fine, but for me, I need something a little more touring oriented.

Overall I think the easiest way to describe it is that on the Strom I'm in very relaxed seating position, while on the FZ1 I feel like I'm in a more alert seating position, but comfortable enough. Once those comfort things are sorted out, I think I will really like this bike.

Once I started getting to the twisty roads on just the stock seat, I really liked it. It's so much smoother and more refined that the Wee from a riding standpoint. Zero vibrations, very linear power delivery, and great suspension/brakes. For a 21 year old bike, it's really an amazing sport touring machine.

Hated that on the CB300F and fixed with mirror extenders. I only did one side but it worked the charm. Just make sure you locktite the extenders. I doubled up on the extenders to get height and distance as the bars are narrow but one should do you.

The left hand mirror comes forward and up and gives me an excellent view behind me without interfering too much with filtering which is legal here.

July 1st Canada Day ride.

Finally had some time to ride and after doing some work to the bike I could go for a longer run.
After a soggy start and scooping up a Photo Tag the day seemed pretty good.

Headed over to Sharon where is was dryer and to drop the next tag. They had a Canada Day event going on and I was there just in time for the speeches and grabbed some cheap eats.

Headed towards Orangeville area, stop in Belwood.

After the rain it was soo frigging hot it was hard to stay hydrated and my energy was falling. Needed a pick me up and they had buttertarts at the country store. Was excellent.

I went around the top of Fergus and Elora to avoid any traffic issues with Canada stuff going on. Eventually got to West Montrose, yup the cover bridge, and ended up at Maryhill, never been here before.

Maryhill park, kids still play with Tonka Toys,

Eventually made it to Hamilton, was going to park at the Dundrn Castle but it was packed so I went up the street to this place which I have always seen and wondered about. Just a view of steel mills nothing much really. At least it was shady and cool.

Headed back home took part of Lakeshore, to avoid traffic issues I then shot up Guelph Line, always good, and pitstop in Alton Mill arts centre.

Good day, but I think my compenstor is toast. Lots of noise coming from the primary drive.

Those butter tarts from the general store in Bellwood are amazing!

No dress rehearsal. This is our life.

Yes it was, that spot is where I like to pitstop but frist time going into the store, I will go back they were amazing and lots of other varieties of tarts as well.

Went for a long-ish ride between classes. Nickel Plate mountain is just south of Penticton, behind Apex Ski Resort There's the main paved road that all the skiers take to get to the hill, but there's a more scenic, gravel road around the back that all the trucks use to get to Nickel Plate mine.

Twisty goodness!

At the top, the road disappears into the forest. Nice place to get lost for a while:

Took my wife out for her first pillion on the Tiger.
We went to Alice's Village Cafe in Carp, and then a couple doors down to the Carp Custom Creamery.
She likes the seating better than the Wee with the OEM seat. Apparently, she'd feel like she was slipping sideways on it at times.
All in all the ride itself was eventless, along the backroads, except for having to pass one tractor.

Did a run up to Haliburton today to check out Skyline park. Thanks to @voyageur for mentioning this last year. Never knew it was here, been to Haliburton many times.
Route was nothing special, did some stops along the way. Got home just before the rain.
Glad you were able to check it out. It's a nice little spot for a quick sit down lunch, before heading to Harburn Rd ;)

This year has been extremely slow for me. Barely 1000 km in. That too half of it was commute lol. When I did go out, it was the regular roads...River Rd, Creemore, Hockley Valley Rd.

Looks like you don't have to try too hard to find twisty roads...people in Ontario go in with a microscope and still can't find roads half decent :P
