2019 MotoGP Discussion (No links)

yeah I like Rins.....great Day for him and Suzuki
almost became Old Guy Day
not a great day for HRC

Great race! Bad day for Honda but good for the championship. Also, credit to VR46 in his post-race interview/press conference - no mention of Yamaha/troubles with the bike - only that Rins was the better rider and deserved the win. Happy for Rins and Suzuki.

How much longer can Lorenzo's string of bad luck continue? Adjusting to a new bike has to be hard enough, but geez, if not for bad luck this guy wouldn't have any luck.

My question for the day:

What tires are on the Pramac Ducatis in pitlane just before Moto3 FP1? It is at 1:04:45 of John's livestream. They look like road tires, which seems pretty odd to me. Am I crazy?

Thanks,
Mark

MotoGP rookie Fabio Quartararo claimed a shock maiden premier-class pole position at Jerez, leading a Petronas SRT Yamaha 1-2 with teammate Franco Morbidelli.

Quartararo posted the new fastest-ever MotoGP lap of Jerez as he and Morbidelli surpassed the early leader of Q2, reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez.

Opting for a three-run strategy in Q2, Marquez recorded just a single flying lap on his opening run, a 1m36.970s, which was enough to leave him top of the timesheets as he returned to the pits.

Only Morbidelli came close to matching him initially, lapping 0.041s slower than Marquez but almost a quarter of a second up on the rest of the chasing pack.

But after the reigning champion was unable to improve on his second attempt, Quartararo fired in a 1m36.880s, matching Marquez exactly through the first three sectors and finding 0.082s in the final sequence of corners.

I haven't seen the vid, but those sound like intermediates (tire is rarely used, its between a rain and slick tire)

They have way fewer tread grooves than an intermediate, they look more like a DOT supersport race tire. I don't think Michelin makes an intermediate tire for MotoGP.

When they refer to Fabio Quartararo as a Frenchman

Always reminds me of Dario Franchiti....the Scotsman

Yeah, I got a kick out of that.

But both Yamaha Satelite bikes on the front row and outperformed the works Team, and the rookie on it broke the Jerez Record on top of that! Rossi went out in Q1 and Mav is on the 2nd row... I was surprised Jarvis was a celebratory as he was, I would have thought that resting ***** face he permanently has on would have been seen.

SPOILER ALERT

So good to see Rins 1-2 the last two races. If this continues we could see some good motogp this season. About time Maverick...good finish.

SUZUKI !

Agreed! Top 4 within 10 points of each other makes things interesting for the rest of the season. It's great to have Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Ducati all challenging. Now if KTM and Aprilia could get in on the act too...

Really heartbreaking to see Quartararo go out like that after winning pole. Also some pretty spectacular crashes in Moto2/Moto3!

the old man is maturing
referred to MM as the best rider on the best bike

very supportive of the Yamaha satellite team's success
and in doing so pointed out that it was not a dig at Zarco

still relevant on the track
and seems to be getting ready for the day he is not going to be anymore

Is Rossi talking about this year's HRC? If so, that is a terrible overstatement; that thing is so hard to ride, and has been plagued with chain/swing arm issues for over half of the season so far. Its gotten more straight line speed and some acceleration than last year's chassis, though. But the 2018 HRC bike was may more reliable, I think the Ducati is still the best bike and really wished JLO had stayed there instead of going to Honda to see what it could do in capable hands this season--hell I would have settled for him on Morbedelli's bike at this point! (Petrux was more exciting as a Parmac rider, he was out there elbows out and super aggressive... now it seems he is just their to fluff the grid numbers.)

But you need only look at JLO to see where that bike would be under anyone else, Nakagami and Crutchlow are experienced journeymen and they can barely muster a top 10 position most weekends. Looking at it objectively that is honestly the hardest and most violent bike to ride on the grid, it breaks bodies of its works (champion) riders: Pedrosa, Marquez, and JLO. It just so happens that Marc is really above everyone else in this sport and after taming that thing for so long that he alone makes the most of that package and can at times make it seem almost boring to the inexperienced eye. He has no rival right now, only himself. And as a 93 fan: that needs to change!

Rins and Qutararo (and hopefully Mir) are looking like the new blood to watch as the only possible title contenders if given time and the right machines. I'm convinced Mav on a Yamaha at this point will be more of the same disappointment... maybe if he goes back to Suzuki he might make some more progress and might get a chamopinship before he retires, but as of now I think his fate is sealed unless their is some massive revolution in design and engineering at Yamaha: like they buy out JLO's contract and pay him to develop the bike for them exclusively. A Mir-Vin swap would make for a bit of excitement.

Interview I saw steady just after Jerez.....

agree the Honda is a beast of a machine
MM is the best athlete of the bunch, so he can make it work
and being pound, for pound, the best racer don't hurt either

really happy to see Rins 42 doing so well
he's like a young JL-99---smooth and fast
but a much more likable fellow

sh*t
do you think
someone maybe figured out this could be a great TV sport??

Interview I saw steady just after Jerez.....

This is the full interview.

I guess I understand what he's saying, (was it originally in Italian and then translated into English?) and he goes into greater detail in that interview. but he is right to mention that most are only in contention because of Marc's crash at COTA (of all places!) this season. It reminds me of Silverstone 2017 when the HRC blew up and everyone was up in arms saying Dovi was on his heels all along... No, the engine blew, he lost 25 points, and the other guys just didn't crash and finised in the points, that's all... Had it not been for that race, it would have been like 2018 to be honest.

Also, HRC tri-colour livery porn:

Just out of curiosity, what is he if not French?

This pic shows a similar tire on Marquez's bike at the Monday test. Is that what passes for an intermediate these days?

I sorted out the tire mystery. They are standard Michelin Power Cup Evo tires used as rim protectors during transport.
