2013 Touring Plans

Does CMA have a same list for Canada, but I guess no road will be found in Ontario. :(

my brother, cousin and i got a trip planned taking us down south. highlights are the blue ridge parkway from Lowgap NC to Asheville NC and the Dragon. plus we plan to stop by cowboy nation - nashville TN to get boots and hats.

@djez - Have you seen the the Tourism Ontario sponsored top ten Ontario routes? They were handing them out on cards at the Motorcycle Show a couple weeks ago, not sure if it's online too. If I can find that card, I'll post it online later.

All of the routes are Barrie and North of it. Supposed to be pretty good stuff actually. I've done a coupe and thought they were awesome.

I have done most of those routes, best ones are way up north 129 is great except for some rough patches. Maybe with good company I can revisit them :)

The bike never really gets put away until the snow is consistently sticking to the ground, but I have started compiling assorted maps, atlases, back issues of motorcycle touring magazines and lists of places I've passed but not explored and that will keep me happily couch surfing for a bit.

No definite plans yet - going back to Utah topped the list - but since my bike's front fork seals are leaking and a couple of other items need attention to in the spring, I may have to make next year the year of touring frugally :-( Last year at this time I had over $1,000 U.S. in my touring budget - this year I have $100.

However, touring frugally may mean throwing the tent on the back and hitting the Ozarks, West Viriginia, I haven't been out to Vermont and New Hampshire in a couple of years now - maybe a trip back down to the Dragon - its not all gloom and doom. In fact I'm kind of excited about maybe doing a motorcycle only campground tour this summer - maybe going back to Mountainfest in West Virginia which is always a good time - places where you camp in the mountains for $15 bucks a night and spend the evenings downing a cold one and swapping riding stories around a campfire with fellow riders :-)

Still trying to figure out my plans. I get 8 weeks off a year which lends itself to plenty of travelling. My first thought was Alaska, but now I may be involved in a church exchange with a minister in New Zealand. If that happens I will tack on time to that exchange and rent a bike and tour NZ for a couple of weeks.

2012 was a year of mega miles, hopefully 2013 isn't much less :)

I'm going west too. My GF will fly to meet me Calgary. From there we plan to go to:

Garibaldi provincial park
Vancouver
Mt. Rainier
Seattle
Some festival, maybe burning man or Shambala.
I will keep my itinerary very open. Wish I could put my DH bicycle, a kayak and rock climbing equipment on my SMC.

I will take a few resumes with me :) Who knows? This will be the year of the "mindblow".

I was just looking at the map. Any one know what's up with this road? http://goo.gl/maps/RvedH

+1 on hwy 129 to chapleau i was up there a few years ago and it was mostly repaved

I'd highly recommend a few days down and back hitting the Smithsonian Aerospace ( both museums ) and the Corning Glass Museum.

Most people on bikes love planes and you will for sure get your jaw dropping at the Aerospace - these I took this October - all can be a desktop photo as they are 4500x3000.

If anyone loves planes the way I do - here are the Smithsonian Aeropspace photos in 4500x3000 -

the set - still needs some description and remove a few duplicates

This would be a very good long weekend trip. Run down through Pennsylvania. Hit Washington ( even if you only do the big space at the Airport where these are shot.)

It can be a bit tricky to find so do you home work - it should be obvious but for us it was not.
Downtown Washington traffic is horrendous so up to you if you do the other Aerospace ( the Smithsonians are all clustered and are free ).
But the one are the airport is outside the worst of the traffic problems. Highly recommended as it the Corning and it's cafeteria. :D
Then half day to Corning

- great food and some incredible glass and history of.....then a nice ride home from there.

Chapleau and up along Superior is on the list but I'll be doing more touring instead of off road in Aus this year. One month to go :D

I want to do a trip to Vancouver. Go states side one way and the Canadian roads on the way back.
Maybe in the same summer I will attempt the East Coast.
Depending on what problems I run into on the first two trips, I might consider going as far south as possible.

What would you need to pack in order to make a long trip like this possible?

Camera, Credit card and CAA card.
Depend on your budget and time.

The other half and I both had that idea for a long time but this summer I may only have 2.5 weeks to work with and with all the amazing places to camp in the US (National Parks...Glacier, Teton, Rocky Mt, Canyonlands....etc.etc!!), I have to admit...the north side just does not seem as interesting.

Would love to get a taste Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and thereabouts. Husband wants to do Beartooth Hwy and I see many roads I'd like to hit as well. 2.5weeks doesn't leave enough time to get off the bike and do as much exploring as I'd like but it'll have to do.

I definitely recommend doing the East Coast - It's beautiful....Loved the Cabot Trail especially. Saw my first moose there!

What to pack would probably be best in a separate thread (I think there is one already) but I would say it depends on 1) whether you're or hoteling 2) how much you care about stinkiness/dirtiness.

How much do you think a trip to there would run? Motels with no camping.

I did this trip with a buddy a few years back, and the total cost (not including ferry/hotel to Newfoundland) was around $1200/person. This was a 10 day trip with 1 day camping only.

Sounds about right. Could be done cheaper or more expensive depending on how much seafood one would like to devour!
