2012 gsxr 1000

Well after Suzuki stated "No new GSXR1000 for 2011 but the 2012 will be amazing" I had high expectations. I agree the bike was already very good but I had hopes it would get slimmer and lighter, some updated styling, and some more ponies up top and especially in the midrange. I don't feel those expectations were too high and unfortunately it looks like they haven't been met. Looks like I'll be keeping my '06 for another year (nothing against my '06 of course as it's a stud).
Well I dunno.
They said it's restyled, it's lighter, and the motor retuned for more midrange power.
LoL, no it doesn't need more "ponies up top".
What, ~175 or whatever not enough to tackle Kipling Avenue!?
Dude we live in a world of 100 kmh speed limits (and only on super-expressways).
A 2006 is like a brand new bike to me...
Only the very young would hear it calling out desperately for being replaced.
R1 is the bike, anyway.
(Not a Suzuki person myself)
I would say, friends don't let friends drive Suzukis (but I'd get flamed).
However if common-sense ruled, anyone/everyone in the GTA would all be riding Versys... heheh.
So - have any of you Litrebike Captains ever taken Race School? Track Days?
A little Amateur Superbike racing?
No?
Hey we all want to window shop - but you guys have "lists" and talk like you're actually going to buy one.
Just get a Versys. (LoL, I know - me neither!)

I ride three modified GSX-Rs, two of them at the track. Thanks for asking.

Honestly, I have thought about it and I like the idea of a lower-cost street 1000. If that's where Suzuki is going, they need to lighten it up a bit and concentrate on MARKETING the bike that way.

Yes.

This GSXR is disappointing (from a tech standpoint)

Both the BMW and Kawasaki ABS systems have the hardware installed to run a wheel speed differential traction control system. I'm not 100% sure but i believe the Honda does as well. BMW, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Aprillia and Ducati have all brought some really neato stuff to the Superbike game in the past 3 years. Suzuki has not.

For 99% of the people looking to buy and ride a 1000cc bike none of that really matters. Buy the one you think looks coolest. For us 1%'ers, this new GSXR looks like a big snooze-fest.

Anybody who thinks improved fuel economy doesn't translate into faster speeds obviously doesn't watch much racing. Fuel Economy = Faster Bike over race distance because they can either burn more gas or carry less of it.

Not always.

lol... any relevant examples to go along with that zinger?? :)

Depends on how fuel efficiency was increased. Lighter engine internals or better aerodynamics would certainly make the bike faster. Changing the gearing to bring rpm's down at any given speed or changing the fuel map to make it burn cleaner at the expense of horsepower would not make it faster.

Gearing and fuel mapping can easily be changed but if the changes from one model to another are such then it won't make the newer model any faster. Look at the 2010 R6, very minor changes from 2009. Different fuel map and different exhaust primarily for emissions and noise reasons while the motor stayed the same. Throw a full exhaust and some sort of fuel management system on a 2009 and a 2010 and they'll be equal.

Yes... I agree with all of this. I never thought of the fact they could change gearing to lower rpm's for their little test, which I assume is always run at the same speed. From the sounds of the article, they have lightened internals and it sounds like optimized some things... I'm presuming they are talking about the air intakes, in regards to the having of pentagonal holes now?? Anyway from what they've written I bet that this engine does out perform the previous years.

There are two approaches for improving fuel economy.

1 is to free up horsepower or decrease parasitic losses. These types of improvements will make a bike faster.

The other is basically neutering the bike. The Aprillia SVX550 (i think i got the letters right) Supermoto can barely get out of its own way with the stock tuning...... but it's good on gas... but its borderline useless. A quick hook-up to a laptop and the right settings changed turn it into an angry bike that will do everything it can to rip your arms out of their sockets, but then it's not as good on gas ;)

No, pretty sure the "pentagonal holes" are the ones down in the crankase to allow air to flow around more easily down there and reduce pumping losses.

My modified GSXR1000 hits the track as well.
No I don't live downtown (in fact most of my riding takes place with zero stoplights).
Yes the new model could use more top-end horsepower.
I ain't young.
The R1 is the bike? (jeez I don't even need to respond to that).
And don't call me "Captain".

Answers: YES! YES! YES!(more than a little)...:D

R1 for me is on the bottom of the list. Every rider I come across out on the roads on a newish R1 starts out complaining about the gearing, lack of bottom end, and very hot seat due to the exhaust and how their passenger got burned. Please note that I have not ridden an R1 but am not a fan of undertail exhaust on any bike.

I had hoped for more upgrades on the GSXR1000 but am glad they finally got rid of the dual exhaust!!

I am not a fan of TC & neither are the pro-racers like Rossi, Hayden....who are 10,000+ times better than me. I prefer to let the rider (me) pay attention and use my skills to ride. If I wanted a computer controlled ride I would get a computer motorcycle simulator installed in my basement.

People that constantly crash in the dry or rain do not need ABS, they should maybe stay off the roads, or practice, practice, practice...until they get it! Some never do. I understand that most crashes are supposed to be due to poor braking by riders. Well on a 800+lbs Harley I can imagine why. :lmao: There rest is generally rider error = PAY Attention!

Stoner, Hayden, Rossi don't want traction control because they are skilled at sliding the rear and feel they could take advantage of that, is that why u don't want TC?

I know I can't take full advantage of the capabilities of any ss 1000 bike, but I'm still completely underwhelmed by this gixxer update. The only way Suzuki would earn my money is if this bike was priced materially lower than the other bikes in the class that have the gizmos. If the price is the same, why wouldn't I go for all the doodads?

If the price is $1000 less you can add your own tc/quick shifter/fuel management for that and a few goodies. It's definatly not ground breaking.

I've ridden my buddies 09 R1 a few times and it isn't anything to write home about. Sounds awsome though.
