2011 ZX 10R v BMW S1000RR feedback

That was my point, murf...

I'll tell my buddy about Guhl Motors because he is of the impression that he has to spend a whole lot more than that to get his bike working properly. I hope you're right, for his sake.

it's common knowledge on the zx10 forums and magazines that the north American zx10 is heavily restricted.

the gearing is different so the curve gets shifted over. Not bad for a motor with the shortest stroke.

Yeah but the Honda makes more power over a wider range of revs than the BMW yet that's not represented at all in the thrust curve. That's the part that doesn't quite add up. Yes when the gearing is different the curves move around, but you should still see a point between the CBR and BMW where the Honda generates more thrust over a longer period of time. It's not like that added torque just vanishes into thin air because of different gearing..

If you have gearing that is steeper by 10% the thrust will be higher accordingly, so if the Bmw is down a few % in the midrange the gearing can more than make up for it.

It's restrictedvwith ignition timing which reduces power by 5hp?
The kawis is a bit mire drastic!

But it wouldn't change the shape of the curve. 10% difference in gearing would be expected to make a roughly 10% difference across the entire curve for any given gear. The Honda makes 10% more power over a span of 5000rpm, but on the thrust curve that span only accounts for a tiny blip where it surpasses the BMW in thrust. I don't think those thrust curves are representative of real world experience, other than a flat out drag race from a standstill in any given gear. I've ridden the bikes and the extra beef in the midrange of the CBR is noticeable. The power feels like it comes on harder, sooner. I'm not necessarily questioning the physical/mathematical validity of those curves (sportrider has fudged them before though) but rather how they apply to the experience of actually riding these bikes.

The hp, torque and thrust curves all follow the same pattern, the hp and thrust curves have additional mathatical operations done on them which scales them and offsets them. If you look at the peaks and valleys the thrust curve matches the others.

The thrust is exactly what the rider feels.

Pretty fat bit of difference!

Cool, very interesting indeed.

The peaks and valleys indeed match, but not when you compare one bike to another. Obviously what I'm saying isn't getting through. The Honda makes more power than the BMW for nearly half the rev range but that's not at all represented in the thrust curves. A difference in gearing does not negate a +10% power increase over a range of 5000rpms. Differences in gearing are linear and constant, they don't alter the shape of the curve, they merely move it back and forward. The relationship between bikes is misrepresented somehow, I'm just not sure where the screw-up is.

Wow quite the education. Very interesting discussion I am learning a lot. I am new the marlet for something new and the CNEt looks just do not appeal to me, no disrespect to the CBR owners out there. Also I have an option on the s1000rr to pay nothing until April 2012. Add the there year unlimited warranty and I'm leaning towards the bmw.

However kahuna does have the zx10r abs on for 14299.

you guys haven't made the choice any easier!

Sorry for the typos. Learning to use swype and obviously not doing it well.

There's a very-little used S1000RR for sale here in Kingston. My buddy Chris owns it. FYI.

BMW warranty is great, not sure how the other manufacuters are, but 3 years unlimited miliage is tough to beat. I think performance wise, you wont be dissapointed with any of the current litre bikes. Buy what makes you grin the most, stats be damned.

Something to consider, if you wanna save some pesos, is to wait until winter and then look south of the border. Every winter at least 2 manufacturers unload new bikes at literally half the price you'd pay here in Canada. Just FYI.

I would doubt the zx10, aprilia, and BMW would be half (unless the economY falls of a cliff).
The CBR1000rr was on sale for $7500 in the USA a couple years ago and since it's not a big seller it may repeat.

Having actually worked on one now (compete rebuild after a crash)....My only negative is they have done a great job of locking you into very expensive BMW dealer service for anything involving the electronics on that bike...I was able to completely rebuild the bike mechanically, but I cant get it started without a dealer reflash of the ECU after just a crash...I think it will be some time, before you average bike shop will have the electronics required to work on these bikes. Although I have seen some NON BMW options out there for around $300 to access and reset ECU functions...

And I am personally am not a fan of the all Torx head bolts usage on that bike...

And for the crashers out there, I dont think the BMW handles them well...The slider was barely touched, and I was really surprised to find this after getting the bodywork off...The damage to the bike did not have me expecting a broken frame....

CBR and ZX10 were both good deals. $8500 out the door for either. The year before that I believe they were unloading R1s for cheap (may have been new 08s)

The point is there's always a really good deal to be had.
