2 day Pennsylvania Ride

part just south of Renovo (coming over the mountain) is tons of fun.

absolutely and Wycoff Run comes off that and back to 120

I don't see Wycoff on there - that should not be missed nor 144 south of Renovo - I'd do that combo in a heartbeat over 555 which is nice but not like Wycoff or 144.

Wycoff is hard to find from the south end but easy from 120 . I'd do 144 to 120 west to Wycoff - there is a good size bridge on your left and a bar/diner on your right ( good food and friendly - does not look like much )

http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/pa_wycoff.html

this clip starts at the 120 end - you can see the bridge type so it's pretty obvious.

here's a shot from the diner parking lot on 120 from when we were down

If you get to Coudersport early enough there are a couple of short really nice loops - Cherry Creek, 44/144/back to 6 in the near vicinity - nice early evening tho take it easy and watch for deer.

You can take 44 south to 144 then go left back up to 6 and home.
here it is

Thanks for the clarification on 144 repave.

Just got back from a 36 hour run through the area. A few things to add to all the helpful posts here. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Good (dont miss these)
-Wykoff Run Rd (bw 120 and Quehanna hwy)
-Kettle Creek Rd (bw 120 and 144)
-Hyner Rd/Hyner Mtn Rd (bw 120 and 44, do the entire road after going up to the lookout)
-Hyner View lookout/Hyner View Rd (take it easy, watch for gravel in sharp turns)
-144 (bw 120 and Kettle Creek/144 junction) - otherwise nothing special
-44 south from 144/44 junction, top part only - otherwise nothing special
-Cowley Hill Rd (bw 607 and 155)
-For crazy ascents/desents 255 and 155, many others that connect the above but these were very memorable to me

Bad (temporary issues)
-oil and tar 144 north of 44/144 junction (long section)
-oil and tar Kettle Creek north of 120 (small sections, but see Ugly)

Ugly
-Kettle Creek, one oil and tar section has some deep gravel on the uphill (heading north from 120) right handed switchback. Spot it on your gps and slow way way down
-Olean, avoid this town at all costs. Long and slow
-heading up or down using 16, dotted with lots of small towns and reduced speeds. Take 219 instead, more scenic and faster pace

Thats all I can think of for now, its been a long past 36 hours. I'll try to post my routes and any other comments later. Btw, the temp in the morning was 9 celcius and went up to 31 celcius in the late afternoon so dress appropriately.

PA roads are awesome! Ride safe.

Awesome - Thank you for all this info! I will take a look at the map and make notes of it - thanks guys

This is why i posted here and not in general, fewer posts but lots of good info

Great thread. PA looks like a great 2 day trip for some sweet roads.

Might take a short trip in a week or so

if you can go down late afternoon evening ride all the second day and 2/3 the next day - its 4 hours to home - works well.

two days is tight and you need to be fresh on those twisties

After reading all of the above though, seems like alot of the roads are dirty, and a bit too debris strewn for anything spirited.

Wrong - you haven't been there why are drawing a seriously dumb conclusion.

144 is 75 miles - there are a couple of spots to be careful of.

http://motorcycleroads.com/75/883/Pennsylvania/Pennsylvania-144.html

The 75 miles is twisties - some very tricky ones with elevation changes. There is a reason for it rating 5 stars and if you not confident of your abilities to deal with a couple of small sections then ride it slowly the first time.
Geez.....some people.

Woah...easy Doc. Having a bad day?

I'm not drawing a "seriously dumb conclusion".

From reading TP's ride report he mentions some possible trouble spots:

-Hyner Mt Rd
-Long Section of 144
-Kettle Creek

Also, a mention of "deep Gravel" on Kettle Creek rd, as well as a report of most parts of 144 and 44 being "nothing special".

You can get your panties in a bunch for me wanting to claify my understand of TP's ride report, but you should probably chill out.

I want to make sure I'm gonna head out to find some great roads.

I took a trip to Ohio using ratings on motorcycleroads.com and motorcycleroads.us and I ended up on a few roads that had great reviews but were dirty and debris strewn.

I'm just hoping for clarification from local riders that have made the trip out.

Geez....some people are so touchy.

You make a judgement call on roads you haven't ridden in the face of people that have just been there and hundreds of rider reports rating them.

Yeah - might just get some hackles up - the only panties in a bunch seems your unrealistic expectations - what??? you want a track marshall out sweeping the pavement for your "spirited" riding pleasure?.

There are few roads better than 144 but none anywhere near as long.

People are providing you with useful information should you choose to get off your picky horse and actual ride instead of make disparaging comments.

Wow! "Disparaging comments" Really?! I said nothing even remoteley "disparaging"....and I made no "judgement calls" whatsoever. hence my use of the word "seems".

But whatever Doc. You're obviously unwilling to hear/see/read reason or be reasonable. I'm not the one who is being insulting in his posts.

TheProcess: When you got some time, let me know about the roads and if you can, give me some more detail the road conditions you mention. Thanks :)

...and ZX600 if you go there before I do, please post up how it goes. I am interested in knowing the road conditions. Or maybe I'll see ya down there ;)

ok guys - I'm back

I will write a review later when I'm not so tired but all I can say is ... Awesome!!

out of the 1600 km we rode, only about one km had gravel, all the roads were awesome, lots of twisties and nice scenery

Paul's motel was fantastic and we decided to take the advice given and stayed there the 2 nights and rode around all the roads during the day

Slow bird, go man, you won't regret it - only kettle creek had gravel, there is a nasty right uphill turn in the gravel but as long as you take it slow, you fine. There is proper construction signs warning you, no worries

Only thing bring a map, cellular phone signal is almost not existent

I think since i was there just yesterday, I can diffuse the argument with facts - There are no dirty roads, only what I pointed out

So this was the route we took

Honestly, pretty much the whole thing was full of twisties, mountains and lakes

My Fav were:

Hyner Run Road - At the end of it you find a look out area - Just fantastic view while you ride there and even better once you reach the summit
Wykoff Run Rd - Do not miss this one
Anywhere on 44 - Just nice ups and downs through the forest and twisties

Honestly they are all great, I am sure I missed some awesome ones due to time.

Best idea was to stay here East 2nd Street, Coudersport, PA 16915 (Paul's Motel) and use it as base camp for day trips - Thank you to the poster that suggested it

That was my way into PA, it took me about 4.5 hrs, we did stop a few times. We took the long way home, through Syracuse and Kingston - Note to self, never stop in Syracuse to try and find something to eat downtown

I hear ya I made a stop in rochester once looking for some good eats was driving a brand new mustang gt I got lost and stopped at a light two guys tried to rob me and steal my car practically ran them over I was panicked was like a war zone cars burned side of the road missing wheels thank god I found a police cruiser and he freaked out that I was in that ghetto area with my car he escorted me to the interstate I could say lesson learned.BTW wycoff run was the highlight for my trip also and I could ride the 44 all day

Here's are my routes. Not necessarily the exact routes I had planned but a composition of the roads I ended up riding and created these modified routes for my next trip down. Feel free to use them or modify to suit your needs.

Day 1 - http://goo.gl/maps/bGxGL

Day 2 - http://goo.gl/maps/FoqvV

On day 1 I had planned to hit Steam Mill Rd but couldn't find a paved access road from the top or bottom. At the top I must have blown past Costello and from the bottom Britton Hill was dirt/gravel. Any help?
