11 months

Dont tell me any one of you wouldnt say something, if a co-worker took a hit in the head, and was off on comp for a year, saying they had a concussion.

every single person would say they were full of crap, and abusing the system.

how many players do you see from the 50's- to the 80's walking around with some type of brain disorder ? they didnt even wear helmets then. the ice was just as hard when they fell on it, the puck still is the same weight when they took a shot to the head

if this situation happened in the 70's, and crosby said. " i'm not playing for you guys, try and win the cup without me " his own teammates would have beat the crap out of him..lol

It was not just Crosby's decision to stay out for 11 months. The teams medical staff did not clear him to play either. Perhapes they learned a thing or 2 after watching what happened to Lindros and others when they returned to quick. Crosby is their bread and butter.

As for his teams mates not respecting him, When he returned to full practice not one of them would hit him. He was ****** off and telling them to but they wouldn't. So either they respect him and understand the situation, or they do not want to feel the wrath of management should they re injury him.

I find it hard to believe this is being discussed.
Crosby has played hockey at elite levels since he learned the alphabet.
To think it was his call to stay out of the playoffs, and not start this season, is rediculous, if you know anything about the NHL.
There's nothing more the kid wants to do, than get back into action.
He's worked out as much as the Dr's will let him, thoughout his recovery.
He's been on the ice, from the minute he was cleared (medically) to do so.
This week, he finally donned the same colour helmet, to signify he's ready to take a hit during practice.
(if the healthy players wear black helmets at practice, those who are not to be hit, wear white, or vise - versa).
From my point of view, I'd rather see Crosby (or any player, elite or not) wait until they are 'cleared' to get back to regular play. It gives the player a much better op to lengthen their career. (ask Lindross if he agrees).
Bettman has some clueless views of the NHL, but he got this one right:

I'm pretty sure MMA fighters and boxers don't have anything important in their skulls so taking big hits doesn't actually damage anything.
I swear everytime I see a boxer/MMA fighter speak on tv or whatever, they have the intelligence level of a 6 year old.

wow, thats pretty ignorant. do you think the same of NHL enforcers ?

believe me, I understand the points that alot of people are making here,
but i still have to wonder what crosby himself was thinking.

lets pick a player like Brett Farve. he played a posistion in which he got BLASTED on a weekly basis Probably got more concussions in a year, than most NHL'ers would get in a career. did he miss a game ? no

do you think the medical staff wanted him to, play ? no

Yet i think his true passion and desire to play overshadowed all. In this Instance, he probably used his superstardom tyo tell the owners "look, Im playing anyways " and he did.

Pittsburgh would have had a WAY better chance at winning if "Sid the egg" would have played

Sure, why not. Fighting isn't hockey.
Unfortunately it does attract fans, bring in revenue and etc so they will never abolish it.

On a related note, if you haven't seen Facing Ali, it's worth a look. Some of the guys that fought Ali need subtitles to be understood. It's kinda sad..but I suppose it's a path they chose to make a living.

Riiiiiight. Cuz so many of us here are members of professional sports teams with full-body contact.

No denying Farve's commitment. I don't think it's any different than anyone else with a passion for what they do for a living. (How many concussions did Jaworski have? He sounds like he's a walking / talking concussion on MNF. I wish they'd ditch his sorry ***)
But - if you watched the NFL, they introduced NEW rules during the off season & EVEN mid season, concerning unnecessary head to head, and deliberate head shots.
Making hard hitting / physical sports safter for those involved has become a science. It's still in it's infancy. Those making the rules are bound to make a mistake or two (much like riders) but at least they are trying to save uncalled for damage to players' grey matter.
UFC participants on the other hand, have been taking head shots on a regular basis. If any of them live long enough, I doubt they will be able to put a sentence together by the time they turn fifty.
I'm not a Dr, but it stands to reason, they can take a little more 'damage' for now, than a hockey player, who has had no formal training on how to take a head shot - especially the blind sided shots.

Sorry - I won't believe for 1 second that Crosby was making the call to ride the pine.

Let's put things into perspective. It's a GAME. He's PLAYING a GAME. He's not a brain surgeon where peoples lives are at stake. He's not designing aircraft, or life support systems, or saving people from burning buildings, he's playing a GAME. Why on earth would he risk permanent injury to play a GAME when he has the majority of his life left to live, especially when he has more than enough money to live comfortably?

Did I mention he's just PLAYING a GAME.

not a sports fan, eh ? you sound like most men's wives

I'm more of a participant than a fan. I'm the anti-"+220 lb sitting on the couch with a 12 pack and nacho squeeze cheez screaming at the tv because MY team isn't playing as well as they would if I was managing them guy".

To ad to that...a game that has already earned him way more than most of us will make in a lifetime.

Pat Lafontaine, Eric Lindros, Marc Savard. All players that got their heads rattled came back too soon and eventually retired before their expiration date.

Crosby is not wanting to join that list.
