Ah yes I was racing on Saturday as well (28th). Final race of the year at our club - great breeze! Had a double reef in the main and half of our genoa furled and were still close to hull speed most of the time (yet somehow despite that still lost mega on PHRF. It is what it is). Definitely put...

Wow that’s very informative, thanks! Will definitely be full PPE in that case. Only have a mouth/nose respirator but may buy a full face if I end up working from inside to keep my eyes safer too. By the sounds of it foam is almost worse than balsa - if it channels water into many different...

I’ve read that yeah. Seems Epoxy goes over Poly but not the other way around. I’ve also read that epoxy is apparently stronger but more expensive so better on smaller jobs? We used epoxy in the engine well and it seems to be working good so far! Didn’t know that handling epoxy made you allergic...

Mast is Deck stepped, with a structural pole in the cabin below the mast from the ceiling to the keel. Non skid pattern I don’t recall off the top of my head. I think it’s something like Gibco Flexmold #301 or #302?

Foredeck is maybe 2-3 square feet (really a rough ballpark, but that’s what It feels like with tapping/knocking), and a strip where our halyard winch and halyard cleats are which is maybe 20”x6” or so. Core is originally foam. Not sure if I should recore with foam or wood - I hear working with...

We thankfully don’t have it that bad. Our boat is also foam cored which doesn’t quite rot the same way. That said we will still address the issues in the next season or two (at least I plan to). Not sure if we will core with foam as well or just go balsa - still looking for suppliers for foam...

Maybe... I've been tearing my hair out all week reading about different ways to skin the cat. Problem is the inside is all a carpeted headliner with a foam backer. I wanna pull it all out anyway, but its translucent underneath in many sections that aren't cored so I would have to sand and paint...

Charter cost is one of the factors that pushed me to get the boat. At about $1k a day I ballpark on the lower end to rent / charter, owning quickly started to make sense (to me). In my case where I split costs with two others, I'm at $3-5k a year depending on maintenance. So I need to go out...

Was looking at these! Price seems right, I think it will be my move. Gotta remove the ancient charger and will use the Noco 2A in the meantime, but I don’t mind just doing things right from the get go if possible.

This is why I’m reluctant to own a sailboat with an inboard anytime soon. Also seems like getting in there to do an oil change or any other regular service would be a nightmare and possibly a mess. Can’t imagine what a big service would look like - yikes.

Anyone have recommendations for house battery chargers? I just got an AGM (Motomaster Nautilus) and realizing my charger may not be adequate (one of those Noco 2A Genius chargers). I don’t have a bank, just a single battery so I don’t need anything too intense. Was looking at Victron but lots...

Fuel numbers for cruising / family sizes power boats definitely seem crazy. I think I spent $70 on gasoline for my sailboat last year and have most of it still sitting with fuel stabilizer in it  Though I guess you also have a bit less to maintain on a powerboat as far as rigging goes etc...

I too am of a mind that racing on other peoples boats is generally better. As long as the crew / owner are nice to be around... I feel like sail racing is a lot like racecars or any other competitive sport - you have to have enough cashflow to address (expensive) things that break often. I...

It always amazes me how people can just try out some sails and see what performs better. I imagine the difference is pretty marginal (0.5 knots?), so discerning that vs other causes for a gain or loss in speed is so impressive to me. Raced on a Melges 24 once, and was amazed at how in tune...

Realistically I don't have much electrical on the boat, so I think this weekend I will write down part numbers of everything I have / can find and run the numbers on how much power everything draws and work from there. The 16ga I have is Ancor Duplex Tinned. Just need to source a good source...

    Sailing Talk

Yeah I believe I originally got the 16ga to run new wiring for lights and stuff, which I believe are mostly LED on my boat so won’t draw much. Though we have an annoying mini fluorescent light above the table in the cabin so I want to ditch that - just have to figure out how to attach a new...

Correct yeah. The shore plugs are protected, though I also read that you want them on you plugs in the boat - but they may trip eachother as well so I know some folks at our club don’t use GFI outlets in their boats allegedly.

I’ve been flipping through the Don Casey book for now - has a book within the book on marine electrical. Lots to keep track of in there, feels like learning the theory is easier when you are tackling a specific job as opposed to abstractly thinking about it. Checking scrap boats for fittings...

I’d like to keep the shore power I think as the cord is super beefy and designed to be out in the elements. Also no regular outlets on our podiums I don’t think. Maybe will just plug in a charger for now and eventually hard wire it to clean up the Lazarette, hopefully it’s not that big of a...
