Cheap GPS device @ Canadian Tire, may be great for warm weather rides.

This is getting kinda funny. EVERYONE is gonna have one of these, it seems!

Half of my department at work already bought it, and so did most of my friends and relatives. Even people that wouldn't even think about buying a GPS otherwise. One of my colleague said "At least half of these people didn't even think they needed one this morning.". The more the merrier, I say :).

That's me. I always kept telling myself that once they drop to 50 bucks I will give them a look. I really don't need one, but as my buddy (and he doesn't need one either ..) ... dude, for 50 bucks, I don't care whether I need it or not .... :-)

The thing is that everyone will find some good use for it for fifty bucks :). Even if you never hack it or never use it as GPS, just load your favorite music, videos and e-books and rock on . Can you find a decent media player with that screen size for $50? I doubt it, this is the IPod killer.

I'm afraid it's usefulness would be quite limited on a bike, even in dry weather conditions. It's far from vibration resistant and it's interface is next to impossible to use with bare fingers while sitting at the desk, let alone with one gloved hand on a bike. It may be of limited use in a tank bag's transparent pocket, but only in set it and forget it mode. Just some points to consider if planing to buy it for exclusive motorcycle use. Then again it's more than cheap enough, so why not :)

It would be good for those spontanious rides. The ones where you just go without a plan. Stop every now and then, check where you are, and look for good roads to aim for. Also handy for locating fuel stations in unknown country areas.

What are the contents of your shell.ini file, and what program do you want to start when you hit nav?

I went to Canadian Tire looking for this and they had no idea what I was talking about but I found a Magellan Roadmate 1200 for $79.00. Pocket size and works great. Still a great price for a GPS unit, far better than when they first came out for $800.00 plus.

I downloaded everything from the FTP site, unzipped, unrared etc. Do I put everything into the Igo8 folder before loading it on to the SD. Do I have to replace anything in the Igo8 folder with the other things that were on the FTP site?

Geez, Im getting confused. Im willing to trade a blank 4GB SD for one that has been loaded, lol

if you want to use iGO8:

1. delete the contents of the speedvale directory in the iGO8 directory (or whatever it is called... speed something)
2. unzip any voice files that you want (Kate, Susan, whoever), and copy them into the iGO directory.
3. Copy any additional maps, dems, buildings, and pois that you want into the appropriate files (if you want usa maps)
4. copy the iGO8 directory to the flash drive
5. modify shell.ini to read: \SDMMC\iGO8\Mobilenavigator.exe

Damn... I should go buy about 2 dozen SD cards, program them, and sell them with a slight markup for all the people that have bought this unit :P

I think you could make a few $$$ doing that. I will be your first customer.

Thanks for the help.

Canadian Tire at Centrepoint Mall still had about 8 in the display case in the automotive section. (Not sure if there still on sale).

Picked up this GPS in London the Fanshawe and Hydepark location.

And I'll be the 2nd customer, 'cause theres no way I would ever figure out how to do this stuff...I would have to quit my job!!!

I have no problem going out and buying a few cards to program, but I would still need to use my laptop on your GPS in order to either change you registry or set the shell.ini file - unless you are capable of doing that.

If I am not too lazy tomorrow (that depends how much I drink tonight), then I might head down to factory direct and get a couple cards to program.

Can someone clarify for me the TTS files ovewrite?

When I start the stock iGO8 it comes with TTS right? It asked me to choose and I did so, picking Susan ...v.1. So the stuff we downloded is better, newer TTS files I assume. After I downloaded it, it unpacked basically two folders

-content
-tts_loq
- and 4 .dll files

These need to be taken and copied into iGO8 folder on my SD card, correct?

I did the above and am still stuck with the stock choice. Have I missed something?

After you copy those files into the iGO directory and say yes to over-writing the files, then you will need to go into the settings to select the voice that you want...

Once iGO is loaded up, go to settings, regional settings, then voice options... select one of the tts options.

Man, the TTS is killing me. I still cannot make it work. When I read your post, I am getting feeling that I have to set something twice through a menu, or I you just repeat the same thing in different words. In my iGO8 setting it says Susan (TTS) v1 (the only TTS offered), but if I click on it it dosn't say anything, just beeps.

One more thing, my iGO8 directory has another iGo8 in it. Which one are we talking about here?

I don't want to sound like a spoiled guy, but if someone who has it all working with some extras could upload a clone of their SD card, it would be great and lot less frustration. At least for me .. LOL
