Cheap GPS device @ Canadian Tire, may be great for warm weather rides.

Just to recap (and because Im none too bright) We just go the the FTP site, download everything there on to an SD, change the shell.ini, insert the SD card and we are good to go?

It's not that simple. You need to unlock the device first, then decide what you are going to install (you don't need everything) and then proceed with installation, configuration, patching...

- iGO8 is GPS navigation software to replace the built in POS. You can add US maps, POIs, buildings, text to speech, etc. to it later.

- MioPocket is a whole new GUI with tons of bells and whistles, including video/audio players, games, productivity tools, etc. It is not required in order to run iGO or almost anything else.

How big of an SD do I need? 2G, 8G?

4GB is has the best price/capacity ratio at the moment and will do the job just fine, but for ~$20 a piece 8GB are not too far either. I suggest MicroSD with an adapter, like this one - they are much more versatile.

If all you want is better GPS software (no advance Windows stuff) then pretty much what you said;

- download iGO software, maps and TTS voices (if you want them)
- Unzip and place the above onto your SD card (USB or card reader)
- modify the Shell.ini to point to the GPS software on the SD card.

That's it. Now when you select navigation on the GPS screen it'll launch igo (or other GPS software if you want).

2GB should work but I'd get a 4GB just incase.

I heard garmin is usble with this thing, can't find a link to the garmin that works with this unit.

Anyone have the link for the garmin, so I can add it to my card to run on this thing?

Tiger Direct has 8GB Class 6 on sale for $20. We ordered like 3 pieces.

hey, first off thanks to all those who posted some links to software and maps.

i got it all working except for the tts. when i first started up igo it showed the option of tts in different languages. i choose the english, but now whne i enter a route and go, it doesnt say anything other then a beep for each turn.

is there anything else i have to do to make the tts work?

You do have to load TTS files for it to work. From the previous FTP link download Kate or Susan(?) and install the files it comes with over the SD card defaults.

Stephan, I had that same problem.
I went back into settings and chose one of the other voices (non-tts).
Now it speaks to me, but doesn't read street names. For example, it will say "Turn left in 200 meters" instead of "Turn left in 200 meters on Yonge St."... for me, I don't care about the street names, so I am happy how it is.

I just extracted the "susan" voice over like instructed and mine works fine. Only thing I noticed is that she was saying "Doctor" (I think) instead of Drive lol.
Thanks to everyone for all the help. I'm beginning to like this unit more than my Garmin.

Thanks to everyone for the heads up on the unit and the hacking unlocking tips. I just wish it was all in one simple easy 1 step does it all process LOL I'm such a noob at this crap !!!

Just to double-check, the only files needed would be the ones that start with 08Q2_NA?

If you don't have iGo installed at all then grab the iGo software file as well. The 08Q2_NAfiles only contain the maps and misc info.

So just anything titled 08Q2_NA and iGO?

Garmin is verified to work on it :) but the problem with it is it would take a few extra steps because the maps would have to be authenticated to the specific SD Card, each card has a unique ID and it would need to be attached to the maps, hopefully I have enough time to sort it out tonight, before I head out to my first ever Hockey game Sens VS Sabers :)

FYI for all of you out in Kitchener/Waterloo, my bro just picked one up at the CT at Fisher Hallman/Ottawa. He said they have something like 8 in the cabinet and another 20 on a cart.

Thanks for all of the info guys re: the Hack info.

yes, counter beside auto repairs (north part of store)
At Aurora, they were out of them this evening. (I get the impression that some of the staff bought a bunch.)

The guy said there's supposed to be 28 or so at Oak Ridges, so maybe I'll go for a spin tomorrow morning before the rain starts.

An excuse to go riding, woo-hoo!

oh, wait.. I don't need an excuse to go riding... :D

CT at Laird and Eglinton had 58 of them as of yesterday, but they had not yet been "authorized" by head office to discount them yet.

CT at Warden and Eglinton had 60 of them on sale.

This is getting kinda funny. EVERYONE is gonna have one of these, it seems!

Use it in the car, or on dry days on the bike.

I'm afraid it's usefulness would be quite limited on a bike, even in dry weather conditions. It's far from vibration resistant and it's interface is next to impossible to use with bare fingers while sitting at the desk, let alone with one gloved hand on a bike. It may be of limited use in a tank bag's transparent pocket, but only in set it and forget it mode. Just some points to consider if planing to buy it for exclusive motorcycle use. Then again it's more than cheap enough, so why not :)
