I'd heard the unsold number was 100 000, but this much ... ! ! !
How? Absolute incompetence on the part of management.
How? Absolute incompetence on the part of management.
In 2009 Toyota has something like 8 million unsold cars in inventory and had to shut down their plants for 11 days.Theoretically that's a year's worth of inventory. FFS, how did they dig that deep a hole ???
The factory's job is to make the bikes, while managements job is to both tell them how many to make and to ensure they sell them. Complete management fail.
I believe they were forecasting based on their stock price goals. It looks like the Austrian authoritys are thinking that too.Yep. They were forecasting based on COVID numbers, as if pandemic trends were going to last forever.

Build it and they will come? Ouch. That worked in the movies but not in real life.I believe they were forecasting based on their stock price goals. It looks like the Austrian authoritys are thinking that too.
Contingency bikes for racers? They are "ready to race" and that clears out some of the backlog. I'm not sure winning on sunday translates into selling on monday at this point though.KTM is fine.
I know this because they just sent me a personal e-mail saying that they'll be fine...

2024 has been a remarkable year for KTM, marked by bold innovation, thrilling victories, and unwavering customer dedication.
Racing is where we show our brand, our engineering, and our passion for the chase, and over the past year, our motorsport teams lined up at more than 1,480 race starts and brought us 246 podiums and 150 wins across various disciplines. Of course, there were hardships and injuries—these go with the turf—but KTM added 11 more hard-fought titles to the record.
Off the racing line, KTM unveiled 59 new models, hosted three international media launches with 152 media partners in attendance, successfully pulled off three customer events with 283 participants, and returned to EICMA, the world’s largest motorcycle show, to debut 17 new models.
KTM has also been navigating a shifting economic landscape in 2024, but true to our READY TO RACE promise, we’re embracing this moment to realign, refuel, and reinvigorate. While challenges are part of any great journey, we see them as an opportunity to accelerate toward an even brighter future.
Looking to 2025, motorcycle deliveries are continuing as planned, spare parts and accessories remain available, and customer service and warranty support are always here for you – just like the signature torque of our engines.
We deeply value your trust and loyalty during this time. It’s your support that keeps us going, and we’re committed to pushing through this challenge to continue delivering the passion for riding that unites us all.

Platitudes with no substance do the opposite of reassuring me as a member of the public. If they had put in the press release that as of now Red and Blue were dead (or ideally for sale) and they were only Orange going forward, I would have a little confidence that they are willing to make the painful decisions necessary. They have to reassure the public. Otherwise it's like a run on the banks.
No confidence = No sales
Death spiral if they don't manage customer confidence.
Does red or blue actually cost them more to run? If you sell them you are setting up competition with a built in following. I would think just keep them as they are the same parts.Platitudes with no substance do the opposite of reassuring me as a member of the public. If they built on-demand, red and blue might not cost much. As they have tons of inventory in all three lines, that adds a ton of sunk money waiting around for buyers. They should have sold one bike and shipped different colour body panels to the dealers so they could stock fewer bikes but allow the buyer to choose their colour.Does red or blue actually cost them more to run? All depends on what is sitting around I have the impression it is street bikes not dirt bikes. I have never seen a red street bike and very few blue ones. Would be interesting to know how much of what it sitting there. If they built on-demand, red and blue might not cost much. Better yet, build GasGas trials bikes and nothing else. Leave it as a profitable niche builder and brand. Build Husqvarna street legal enduros, drop all the other 4 stroke off road, maybe keep the 901 and keep two strokes Motocross/cross-country/enduro. Drop KTM 2 strokes and keep all the 4 stroke Motocross/cross-country/enduro models. Brand the electric bike whichever you want, but only release it under ONE brand. If they built on-demand, red and blue might not cost much. I like that approach. Your approach makes it easier to know at a glance what you are looking at. Like GM/Ford and many others before. Competing with yourself by selling two or three almost identical vehicles is just dumb.Better yet, build GasGas trials bikes and nothing else. Leave it as a profitable niche builder and brand. They need(ed) to delineate the purpose of each brand even under the same (leaking) corporate umbrella. Their biggest marketing mistake was being "Ready to Race" - with themselves.
This could be very exciting for NA. Apparently, many of the bikes don't meet Euro 5 so they can't be sold in Europe after next week. I assume they are big and not a good fit for asia. That makes NA the dumping ground for much of the inventory.
Sold for 'off road use' only ?If they've got non Euro 5+ bikes in stock in Europe, that is a big problem, because redirecting those to the North American market might not be as simple as re-applying a VIN sticker.
For some reason the words and rhetoric in this email is similar to what i have read from damon motorcycles. Complete disconnect from reality.KTM is fine.
