Right of way, Wrong?

I have a question regarding ROW. At an intersection there's thru traffic flowing east west with stop signs for the north south traffic. I approach from the south and want to turn west ( left turn) .There is a line up of 3 cars from the north stopped and all three want head south directly thru the intersection (no turn). My understanding is just like at a traffic light, because I'm crossing lanes of traffic I yeild ROW to all three cars going straight thru.

Quite often the second car (headed straight thru) decides it should be treated as a 4 way stop and tries to wave me thru. I always wait for them to finally go (while people behind me often honk).

Am I correct? (I wanna say that's what I was taught but that was over 40 years ago) My quick google search was a little ambiguous.

I don't know the law, but I would say you're wrong. In my view, what you're referring to is an intersection with two stop signs. So those facing stop signs have to stop, while the others don't. So I think, just like a four way stop, it should be treated like that for anyone with a stop sign. The short of it is, is that you and the other side take turns (for what it's worth, I would probably give you a little honk for not going after the first car).

I never proceed when someone is waving me through. I know they are trying to be nice, but often times it's not either safe (because other drivers are not paying attention to the whole situation) and it's not right.

That's how I treat it. Same as you. The person heading S should not be stopping and doesn't know the law. I see it all the time where people are seeing a mysterious stop sign that isn't there. I usually wave them through while trying to point like "why are you stopping? There's no stop sign for you.".

But in this case the southbound traffic does have a stop sign. I'm with @Robp but at the same time I'd exercise extreme caution because everyone's going to think they're right regardless if they are or aren't.

If I'm making a left in a situation like this, I treat it as a 4 way stop sign.

First car from NB lanes goes straight through, then I go turn left once the E-W traffic is clear, then the next going SB goes after me.

Whether that's legal or not...no clue.

This 2 way stop you need to give ROW to all pedestrians(if any), traffic moving E/W and the traffic going S if they reached the stop before you. You do not give up your ability to proceed ‘next’ just because they are going straight and you’re going left.

Many malls/facilities are adopting this what I would call ‘limited intersection’ where typically traffic inbound from the street does not have a stop but 2 ways of cross traffic do. Always turns into a **** show when the people entering from the street think they have an imaginary stop sign and grind to a halt.

First come first served. Who ever gets to the stop sign first, goes first. Both have to yield to the traffic with no stop sign. If you both get there at the same time, then the straight through or right turn goes before the left turn.

Roundabouts should eliminate this problem but sadly they are still confusing for a lot of drivers. I try to always use the outside lane and go very slowly.

Sorry, misread that ...

I agree.

Unless you’re in Mississauga where they remove them. Only to replace them with 3 stop signs.

🤦🏻‍♂️

Why do they remove them? They save lives.
Because they're idiots.

Here's an article on it.

I reached out to the local councillor and had a boiler plate response where I told them that the entire world accepts roundabouts as a more efficient, and safer mode of transport...yet we got rid of them because 'community safety concerns, loud noises, blah blah blah'

So now instead of cars ripping around the roundabout, the residents have idiots peeling out and fishtailing from stop signs.

Idiotic.

I always assumed the person making a left turn was low man on the totem pole.

As far as being waved through, make sure you have very good visibility and time to adjust for the Mr. Popup that can't wait.

You do not give up your ability to proceed ‘next’ just because they are going straight and you’re going left.
Before I start getting into grief can you show me where that is in the HTA? Where's @GreyGhost when you need him.

For sure that's the rule at a 4 way stop, but I thought this was different.

LOL. From the article: If the intersection is so busy that you can’t get in to make a turn, “you should not be turning left there at a busy time of day,” DiCicco said. “That’s usually where they end up putting in roundabouts and all-way stops.”

Sometimes you don't have a choice, unless he's advocating for making a right followed by a U-turn.
