They took the metal targets out of my local range for a while since there was evidence of idiots shooting the targets with large caliber rounds from 25 yards. They were also shooting at less than that with shotguns destroying the housing around the targets. The risk of ricochets is real and your lottery chances of something bad happening increase with large/powerful caliber at short distances.

Gun owners are their own worst enemy sometimes.
 
We had a frame built at the club where you could see the patterning on a shotgun , big steel plate that you would put paper in front of to see if your chokes were choking enough and if your double gun was a 50/50 or 60/40 pattern.
Last week some goof balls fired a few 12g slugs at it to sight in a deer gun, left 1" holes all over it . Its taken down and gone now.

1. what idiot is firing a large slug at a sheet metal plate ( thats what road signs are for)
2. At a club the doesnt allow slugs/ rifles/ buckshot on the property , who does this ?

And that is in a well-controlled environment with all members personally vetted and normally long-standing. Can't stop dumb. Surprised the club doesn't have security cameras so they could figure it out, bill them and kick them out.
 
Cameras are probably coming , it’s a 150yr old club , from what I’m told it’s a mostly historically good group , but there are always idiots

Cabelas and others are now stocking the rifled 9" barrel version of the GSG-16 which imo looks much nicer than the 16" barrel version plus it has a few upgrades. Don't know how good that red dot sight is so I'd be tempted to buy the one without it for $50 less and just add a decent one on it.

If you have astigmatism those red dots can be interesting. The GSG 16 is a nice little inexpensive plinker. I have a magnified prism sight on mine and it will shoot accurately out to 100 M.

So I hired a coach for a day clinic to help me get to the next level skeet shooting . I’ve only been coached by the dozen guys I shoot with , all experts just ask them. I was making position errors I had no idea about . Professional coaching , I think it’s worth it .

I'm into target shooting and general plinking (I used to shoot in the Reserves), and recently picked up a few surplus SKS's to have a bit of fun with. I also inherited my wife's grandfathers' Mossberg 22 target rifle.

To cap it off, I joined H.A.H.A. to gain access to their 100 yard rifle range.

I don't follow this thread as I have no interest in guns. I have no problem with sane responsible gun owners.

Therefore I'm not up to date with current legislation on registries and the off and on again rules.

However I overheard a conversation where some guy mentioned his uncle used to shoot target in the lax days of ownership. The uncle had a few scoped rifles and two IIRC handguns. The handguns were stolen from a flimsy but legal at the time storage cabinet. Uncle then sold some of the rifles but kept two of the better ones but hasn't upped his security system / lockup, probably in a closet.

Go back ~50 years and anyone over the age of XX years could walk into Canadian Tire and buy a cheap 22 and a box of shells with simple ID. I suspect the uncle bought his stuff under those rules. Handguns were different. This was all before the daily school shootings in the USA.

I also assume that if the appropriate law enforcement group got wind of the situation they would use a gun bore brush on him for an unintended purpose.

Where are we on registrations? I gather the guns are target so not tank killers but getting shot by a 22 wouldn't be fun.
 
A .22 will kill you. My aquaintance Leo (his name not lawman ) was killed by a .22

I haven't checked recently but it was at the top of the list for gun deaths in the US for a while. Mainly as it was the most popular (and probably most widely accessible) for a self-inflicted gun shot.
 
They also fly a lot further than you think. Have a look at a 5.56/.223 NATO projectile compared to a .22 one. The difference is mainly the charge behind the bullet and the length of the projectile.
 
When we took the hunter safety course , the guideline on a .22 was 1 mile. That’s a long way .

At 200m a 22lr drops about 4ft, for it to go 1mile you'd have to be pointing it in the air (aiming at a squirrel in a tree or a bird). At 800yrds, less then 1/2 a mile, the bullets velocity is about on par with a bb gun. If there is wind or its a humid day it would be even slower.

Some people don't really think through ballistics so rules are written for lowest common denominator. Squirrel in a tree could have you lobbing bullets but so could a target uphill from your shooting location (unless there was a lot more hill above the target.

Even if the bullet has slowed down, it doesn't take much energy to pop an eye and change someone's life (obviously incredibly bad luck to hit a vulnerable target that small from that far away)
 
I didn’t write the training course, just passed it . I agree with Greyghost , written for the lowest common denominator.
I think the general point they try to make is be conscious of where that bullet may come down . One question on the test is how many lead balls the diameter of a 12g shotgun would equal 1 pound. Answer is 12 . No one needs to know that ever, it’s to ensure you paid attention to other stuff in the course .
