Harley-Davidson lays off another 169 workers despite big sales growth

Maybe they realize
That people assume its "All American" but no one really asks about it. So they figure they can still keep that "All American" image , still charge a fortune for their bikes, and outsource most of their manufacturing/build, making them more profits than they ever had!

Ah the business world is a breath of fresh air....*cough* *cough* *choke* *cough*

ok, but on the other hand, do motorcycles really need to be assembled by CAW workers costing >$100K a year with benefits? It's a torque wrench, not a scalpel.
Righty-tighty, lefty loosy, end of training.

Not a $100000. Maybe $20 an hour or so USD plus benefits and an employee matching pension plan? Not the defined type pension because that is the type of thing that pretty much bankrupted the U.S. automakers. Just pathetic for them to do this. Indian or Victory is sounding like a better option to me.

Don't you mean UAW? Let's get our Countries straight now. :D

You are overestimating their technical expertise. With modern error proofing and electronics they no longer need to know which direction tightens a bolt.

CAW/UAW whatever ...GM at one point spent $17M a year on Viagra for employees. Is that a wrench in your pocket or just glad to see me?

Buy American? 30% of the workforce assembling your brakes are stoned.

"A confidential report delivered to General Motors Corp. and United Auto Workers officials just over a year ago startled them with these harsh estimates: 31 percent of GM's blue-collar workers and 20 percent of white-collar workers were seriously impaired by or under the influence of alcohol and other drugs while at work. It's naive to think a publicly traded company won't make as many manoeuvres to enhance the company as it can. I made a nice little profit on HOG stocks, I say good job.

Harley was owned by AMF Italy for a while in the 70s, Harley style and Italian reliability.

AMF "Italy"? The A in AMF stands for American, as in American Machine and Foundry, not Aremacchi which AMF bought during their HD ownership years. And the horrible dependability issues of AMF Shovel Harleys had nothing to due with Aermacchi, which won world championships for HD, or pre-AMF Harley, but good old fashioned American greed as AMF sucked every last cent they could out of HD, ran it to the ground, by cutting back on quality control costs with no reinvesting of profits or R&D. Once they were bought out by a group of long time HD of employees, including Willie G, the quality and fortunes of HD turned around with the Evo.

You need to lose your bigoted cultural views and learn a little something about motorcycles before you spout off at the mouth like that and embarrass yourself again.

Lulz. Lots of Harley bashing going on these days. Can't really figure it out. I think it was justified back in the 1970s, but not so much today.

Agreed!! You mention Harley on this site, and it gets flamed. Meanwhile I see much higher milage on Harleys, than on any other brand motorcycle.

I stand corrected.

I had no idea Harley was no longer greedy and a now an R&D technological power house.

LOL. No.

look, there are motorcyclists, and Harley customers. Each group is distinct, and wants nothing to do with the other.

Harley could get interesting in the next 5 years as they are very aware that their target demographic is dying off.

They have that new bad ass office worker soa fanatic trendy demographic up and coming though. :dontknow:

You are delusional and need to get out of the GTA, try a road trip south sometime. They majority of the bikes you will see doing any distance, are Harley's, Gold wings, and as mentioned BMW airheads.

I think you could split the HD crowd into two distinct segments. I think one of those segments gets tarnished by the other and lumped in by those painting with a broad brush.
