Where would you go over New Years and why?

Thinking about going somewhere between Dec 31st and Jan 5th. Not to celebrate New Years, but because that's just when we can get away.

Vegas. Don't need to spend a week. It's warm. Rent a bike, people watch, enjoy a show or two, enjoy the strip, have a drink, gamble, never been during New Years so, can't say if it's a reasonable price to get away but, plenty of deals going on.

Otherwise, I'd just get cosy with a travel agent and have a bag packed for 4 or 5 days and take a last minute trip to where ever. Panama, Costa Rica, or some 4 or 5 star resort in a tropical place.

Or head west or North for skiing. Banff, treblant. Etc.

I've been to Vegas and can't say that I'd ever go back. I like the surrounding area, but not Vegas itself. I really like Banff, but going there in next summer and same with Tremblant. But skiing or hiking somewhere nice is a good idea.

I do like the last minute trip idea - I might just wait a few weeks and see what is available on Sell-Off Vacations or something. What are the other good last minute deal travel websites?

Days off = skiing for me. Even in the summer if I can :)

4-5 days is not much, I would recommend you check out Stowe. I had quite a good time there after I spent 3 weeks out west... so it's got to be pretty good. You can do some chute backcountry skiing around the chin if you are in to that kind of stuff.

Sugarloaf is probably the best EC lift served area, but it's a bit further.

Might want to google Gaspe and Tuckerman ravine... see if that catches your interest

When you head out wets in the summer check out the book called "Don't waste your time in the Canadian Rockies".

I've done Tremblant for New Years. Honestly it wasn't that great. Plus there's such better hills to ride. I'd vote to look for a flight/package out west.

I would try to find a nice place through airbnb.com and relax. I'd love to have a cabin for a few days.

Nothing like the tremblant bitchez wearing short skirts and open toe stilettos in half a foot of snow.

Funny enough me and the wife are asking the same question of just about the same time frame. I will update the thread with what we find

I would be open to even stuff in the states, maybe even the California coast or something. I prefer warmer than colder, but a cabin in some snow capped peaks sounds nice. AirBnB is also a good one - I have friends that list their place in Little Italy through that site and they have more knowledge than I.

Central America also sounds nice. Wherever it is - it has to be done on the cheap.

The trick I've found with cheap trips is patience and flexibility. Since you are picking the travel date, that kind of limits things.

You might find a cheapo tropical inclusive package that works out well.

The time part is on your side. I'd just check out a couple of travel agents and see which ones click.

The best New Years I've ever had it with a few close friends and rented a condo or cottage. The destination didn't really make much of a difference. Collingwood, Huntsville for example.

We get cigars, scotch, nice steaks etc. other food and munchies along with a couple of guitars/ drum kit, or what ever.

Good sized hot tub, some good music, close friends, kill off 3 or four days in the blink of an eye and laughs that linger for years and memories for ever.

We also break out of poker chips and stupid games like catch phase or sequence etc.

The trick has always been availability of such friends. Work, kids, etc. just makes it hard to make it reoccur.

I'm currently looking but I have a bit longer (10 days) so here's what I've found:

Puerto Rico consistently comes up as cheapest on flights to a warm destination. Even from Canada it's around $450 ish on google flights. Hotels etc can be pricey though.

you can currently get to Hawaii for around $550 (see redflagdeals) but your dates might not work

Whats your budget? $750 or less will get you to Panama City and there's tons to do there for 4-5 days. Rainforest is a $10 cab ride from city centre, Panama Canal, AirBnB from $30 upwards, food is amazing, old city etc, cheaper than Costa Rica for things to do and more accessible.

These are prices I've been looking at for dec10th ish though, New Years might head up a bit. Use Google flights to see whats available, plug your dates in, departure airport (use Buffalo too) then put central or South America as destination for example and scroll the map to see prices.

I wanted to go Dec 27 and come back anytime after Jan 2. Being that time of year the prices are insane. Belize would.be the spot for me. Tropical climate. A lot of history to see and it's English speaking. I could care less that it's new years it's just with work shut down for the holidays I don't have to burn time off. I'm still looking but the prices are holding me back.

Try Panama....I've been two or three times now and its easy to get around the country, everything is accessible and the flights there are reasonable. By the time you've stumped up for an AI vacation package at Xmas time anywhere else you can have a custom trip there. You need to be a little adventurous with regards to accommodation, food etc and you need a bit of street smarts. Some places are a little...shady lets say.

Last year we grabbed a really good deal from this place
http://www.sirsamsinn.com/ its kinda expensive unless you get a good deal but it was tones of fun if you like to enjoy the winter.

We went snow shoeing and dog Sleading. There are snowmobile trails(and rentals) to if you are into that thing Wood fire in the rooms made it nice and toasty.

I would try to go hunting. Nothing like ringing in the new year with a fatality.

Or road trip with all season tires. On down side, 5 day road trip in Ontario couldn't be had for cost of all inclusive 5 day banana belt including flight.

Not Manhattan. Did that once. Had a nice place near Central Park. Never again.

How about Quebec City? Check out some of the boutique hotels in the old town. Great restaurants and history as well. It's like going to europe on the cheap.
