Startcraft world championship this weekend in Toronto

And racing, hunting, and fishing ARE sports. Playing <insert random video game title here> though??

Have you guys heard of GT Academy? This is where Gran Turismo of PS3 has an online time trial where the 32 fastest racers get flown to a Central place to compete in a tournament. Then, the top 16 get flown to Silverstone to compete who the fastest 'virtual' racer is. This racer eventually gets taken onto one of Nissan's race teams. Mind you alot of the guys who won had ZERO previous race experience in actual cars yet nearly all of them have been successful in the Pro circuit. Heck, their first dude has already scored podiums at LEMANS!
Not bad for someone who was just 'playing video games'.

I guess my point is, there is some skill/talent to playing video games. The guys who are 'pros' have incredible Hand/Eye Coordination.

I got no issues with paid gaming tournaments, but calling video gaming a sport is really really wrong.

My powerful PS3 trained thumbs make me an athlete I guess!!

why not? Chess or GO is considered a sport. Billiards is considered a sport and they're not exactly physical.

Those sound like games to me. Like Golf or Baseball. Games.

Don't tell that to me, tell that to SportAccord.

Let me ask you, what do you consider sport then? I'm guessing it has something to do with physical superiority.

why must it be superiority?

the fact you address it as such shows your mindset.

I (personally) associate sport with physical exertion combined with mental toughness. Rugby and hockey comes to mind, not sitting in a racing simulator. I consider F1/MotoGP sports as they are both physically and mentally demanding.

World championships for who can click on buttons faster? It's right up there with Poker. Pass times at best, but don't make it out to be more than it is.

I swear pawning noobs on COD was a sport. I have to be all hyped & jacked up. Speak about reflexes, if I didn't had ninja-like reflexes, I won't be as good.

Plus one more thing, all my hobbies all started off as videogames; motorcycles, firearms & military history. I just graduated as I got older

To each his own, I guess. I consider anything that involves competition with the element of skill a sport.

When I mentioned physical superiority, I was simply alluding to anything physical that involves competition (basketball, soccer, etc). And what's wrong with thinking that way anyway? Isn't that one of the basis in sports is to be competitive and to see who can come out on top?

But who can click the buttons faster? I'm sure you were being sarcastic but don't make it out to be less than it is. These folks who play in these tournaments actually have quite the talent(maybe useless to you). Their hand/eye coordination is quite impressive, and there's actually some thinking involved as well.

I don't think Starcraft tournies rely on twitch-monkey hand/eye co-ordination reflexes as much as first person shooters - isn't starcraft more of a strategic game? I could be wrong, I don't play RTS games.

not quite sure myself. For sure it involves strategy, but i'm sure it involves some finesse with the mouse and keyboard and pinpoint accuracy when selecting individual units.

I don't play rts either, but these guys measure their actions by the minute (literally) and the best players know how to group/manage their units and the map efficiently. It's hard to explain, but you can try watching a youtube video.

And lol, let's not kid ourselves. My motorcycle is the most expensive video game yet.

So is this show worth going to or what?

Lots of hot chicks or just nerds talking gibberish all day?

I have a chance to work the show off duty ..

Did you miss the first part where it said "gaming for money"?

Is poker a sport? Darts? Chess? All of these can be played competitively for money.

The term sport does not implicitly imply "athletic sport". It is entirely subjective.

How is fishing anymore a sport than a game of call of duty? One could argue that fishing is LESS of a sport given you are competing only indirectly against another human, where as video games pit you directly against anothers hand eye coordination / strategy / cunning.

Personally, I think its all BS. The sports fans that like to play high and mighty over gaming fans, strike me as the type that are really just out of shape loser failures that were barely good enough for a high school team, so they live vicariously through whatever professional sports team they whimsically decided to root for. So little pride in their own accomplishments, that they have to take pride for a professional team in which their involvement is usually nothing more than screaming at the tv while slopping beer all over themselves and getting into the occasional heated argument over their fantasy football team's success. I guess stereotypes can cut both ways, huh?

For the record, I couldn't care less about what competitive sport people engage in. If someone makes money playing tiddly-winks, good on em. If they call it a sport, lovely.

The reason I am going is i play the game once a while (at least I will understand what the commentators talking about) and I have never been to such an event in person. It's more of curiosity than anything else. hot chicks? I am not so sure. go to Ducati open house will be a better bet:-)

You should definitely go. Ask people if they are up for a "zerg rush" with a suggestive wink

Or where the best place to deploy a siege tank is and thrust your pelvis violently
