Some of these replies really betray your ages...things arent quite the way they were when you guys were in highschool in the 80s....gaming is a billion dollar industry, GIRLS (gasp) actually play games now too!!!! dont know about the competitive world of gaming, so cant rightly comment..plenty of socially awkward nerds will probably be in attendance, just like there's tons of overweight drunken slobs at a sporting event....who cares?

What's the name of that streetfighter tournament they put on yearly? I've never seen so many spectators at a video game event.
To the rest of you scratching your heads trying to figure out the whole video game tournament thing, it goes way back. The first real big one must of been the Nintendo World Championships back in 90. That was huge.

You got it right man. Some people just care way too much about others' lives.
Why can't I come home from a hike, climb, ride, hockey or football and kick back with some LoL or GTA V without having a label attached? Am I obliged to call up my fwb and eat a blue steak instead? Hell, most of the forwards (myself included) on my rugby team get together and play D&D.
It's like those damn motorcyclists! They're just trying hard to be cool cause they have some kind of deathwish.

you'd be surprised at the demographic who play at these tourneys. Not all are the 'nerds' you guys are so quick to label nor follow that type of culture. I was actually pretty damn competitive back with CS in my early 20's and I wouldn't exactly call myself a nerd nor look the type.
And as the OP said, if you guys actually played these games and know how it works, they're actually quite fun and intense to watch. This applies to anyone who have no interest in a particular sport/event. Tons of people I know could care less about Motogp or racing of any sort and think it's the most pointless, most dangerous thing in the world.
