Anyone interested in a James Bay Highway tour to Radisson/James Bay week of August 5?

Re: Anyone interested in a James Bay Highway tour

I will try to make it, but don't wait for me....I may not show, looks like we're putting our 22 yr old cat down today,so that may take up my day. If I make it, I will be on a red bandit.

How many bikes do you own?! I think you have mentioned at least 3 so far.

Sorry to hear about the cat. See you there if you make it.

Thanks, he's one of those cats that hates everyone except their owner, in the case my wife,so it could be a long day.

I currently have 3 plated and insured. Total, ;including various frames and the scooter I believe is 14. Yes, I need help.
Although, I am considering selling/trading the bandit and getting a ural, you know for the dogs.

Crap I miss this. I dont think I will make it.
Are you guys going to have another run where you test your mileages?

Cheers

I had to put my 21 year old cat down. Not easy... photos of me as a kid holding him, photos of me as a grown man holding him. Memories. Take care.

Re: Anyone interested in a James Bay Highway tour

Good to meet up with zrxter and adv_round.

Ended up taking a windy gravel (but very packed) road near Terra Cotta, and then ended up doing a parade route in Georgetown with people lined on both sides of the streets and lots of kids waving.

I don't know if another meet up is really necessary, as there really isn't that much to plan out other than making sure your bike is in a condition to do such a trip, you have the necessary gear (rain suit, warm clothes, backup fuel, etc), and cash. The things we did talk about:

1) Likely going to book the dam tour for as early on Wednesday morning as they can do it. That way we can still head South to Matagami after the tour ends. If they don't do morning tours, then we will have to try and book it for Tuesday late afternoon.

2) We decided it would be best to pre-book the first two hotel stays (Matagami and Radisson). If there are 5 of us (me, Steve, zrxter, adv_round, and rockerguy) then we might as well attempt to book two rooms with two double beds each. We'll have to draw straws to see who sleeps on the floor if there are 5 of us. For the remainder night(s) we will play it by ear, or ask in Matagami if they are scheduled to be full on Wednesday night.

As for a fuel test, I'd suggest just getting a fuel pack of some sort and trying it on your own. I know my bike gets around 400k when I am down to the last bar. Yesterday I filled up at 370k at the last bar, put 15.8l in a 20l tank, and was riding around with a passenger all day and not taking it easy. I doubt I will even need to use my rotopack, but I will have it along anyway just in case.

Anyway, those that are in for sure, PM me your email and I'll start communicating that way, especially the finer details like booking of rooms, etc.

Re: Anyone interested in a James Bay Highway tour

Check your wind direction and speed to gauge fuel use. There is a free app
http://www.windfinder.com/apps/iphone/

Take some bug repellent.

I assume someone has a GPS.
There is no phone service most of the way but there are phones at waypoints - you might want to load some in for the phone locations - once you have one you'll know how far to the next.

Pics of the dam tour please.

As I mentioned - nice break in Rouyn-Noranda is the AL Van Houte.

Consider staying in Quebec instead of HWY 11. Good luck - have fun.

Is it possible to step foot on Nunavat soil while you're up there?

Doesn't seem too far away from the roads

So no more camping?

So no more camping?

It is still a possibility, but the three of us there today all preferred to get a hotel. Reason being that we are going to be riding hard (likely 12 hours in day 1, 7 to 8 hours in day 2, etc) and we figured it would be nice to have a good sleep/hot shower, etc, between riding like that. It would also mean less to pack.

Rockerguy bring octane boost and fill with Reg in the worst case.

I was thinking about that but cannot confirm if those things actually works. I once run 89 oct on my bike & it didn't run too well at low rpm. Especially if you have it loaded up, i don't think it will like it.

I agree with this! After a long day I don't want to be worrying about tent.

I am however just 80% sure. Not too sure if I can get the time off, but will keep a close eye on this thread.

I'm good with no camping, just wanted to confirm.
So what is everyone riding?
A wee strom for diesel I know, everyone else?

My bike is in my sig, I know, I know. But I can't afford 2 bikes

Diesel, assuming you will be contacting the hotel/motel, you should ask if they have cots, otherwise we all have to carry sleeping bags and may never use them.

Is there any possibility of me meeting up with you guys along the way? I live in Ottawa, but could ride anywhere really. I could even come up to Toronto the night before potentially.

You could meet us in North Bay, but it will be hard to get the timing just right so that no one has to wait. We'll likely need to stop in North Bay for some food and gas anyway.
