Chinese Rotors

I have a grey-market 1987 CBR250 (MC17) that needs new rotors. I came across this guy on eBay selling rotors from China.

Has anyone ever purchased from this guy? They're charging $130 for a pair of front rotors. Buying these parts from GB will cost be $340, Australia $260 and Japan $200 (all prices not including shipping). So they're a good deal but is this a classic case of "you get what you pay for"? What's a good price for front rotors anyway?

Rotors in question are these:

Thanks for the help!

You have the right to run yourself and your bike off the road but you do not have the right to run into other people and other people's property. I find it interesting that people try to compromise for what seems to be the most critical item on a vehicle.

i purchased an after market set of rotors for my acura, and in under 3 months they were warped to ****. original ones had 180,000km on them +. i had to go back and order oem ones, no problems since.

the "aftermarket" ones were made in china, i found out when installing them. however was sold by an american brand.

take it for what it is

For rotors if I'm I'm not going OEM I wouldn't go any less than EBC...

For major components, I wouldn't cheap out on chinese knock-offs. Brakes are extremely important for yourself and surrounding motorists. Don't think of just your wallet for a second and I am sure you'll make the right choice.

LOL.....where do you think all the other brands of rotors come from?????

Its not where they come from that matters...more so the quality control. For less than $150 front and back can't expect too much...

I had a 89 for vintage racing and I ended up putting a set of EBC rotors on it. They were OK and probably a lot better than the Chinese ones. The problem is they were also twice the price as I had to get them from the UK.

You could try pinging some EBC distributers here, you may get lucky. Supposedly Galfer also do replacements but I couldn't find any at the time.

galfer for example is made in the usa.

you cannot argue that there is no difference between a cheap chinese knock off vs high quality stuff whether its made in the usa, uk or where ever else

I personally know two racers who have raced a season on chinese ebay rotors, and haven't had any problems yet.

I have had OEM rotors that were either warped or machined to sloppy thickness tolerances on a brand new Honda CBR.

I race old junk.....so what's better? 14 yr old OEM rotors or brand new chinese ones?
I don't believe that china only makes junk. The problem isn't what gets made, the problem lies in how many get tossed out. Quality control employed by that specific factory is what matters. But how can you tell which factory, which QC manager etc was working that day?

Food for thought.

Wait a minute.
Let's back the hell up here.
You have a "grey market CBR?"

What the hell is a Grey Market CBR?

And if you do have this Grey Market bike, what would be wrong with putting cheap rotors on it???

I'm very confused here.

It is a Japanese-import 4 cylinder 250cc 16 valve 18,000 rpm screamer. "Grey market" because it was never sold here through official channels. Very cool bike. If it's in decent shape, spend the extra money and get the proper parts - don't cheap out, particularly on anything safety-related.

The other route you could take is to figure out which other bike used the same rotors ... with a bit of luck, it will be a bike which was sold here and then you can hit the used market and recyclers.

Not all Chinese brake discs are bad. If you're not tracking the bike they should do. The cheaper EBC ones tend to rust if you get them wet and let the bike sit. They're okay for the money though. OEM brake discs are crazy expensive but they really are the best to use.

I'm also hesitant with the China stuff, but I'm also needing a rear rotor after 60k. First 15-20k I really used and abused the rear brake, the pads were worn to the metal and it had ****ed up my rotor. I got a front EBC at Kahuna for $100 which was a deal. Looking for a rear EBC even on ebay is about twice that...

I brake properly now and don't wanna spend that much for a rear rotor when I only use it about 10% of the time. I checked out the ebay China rotors and they range from 45-60 bucks with free shipping. They seem to be made by a brand called "Arashi" I googled em and they seem about as legit as you can get from China...

After reading about them it says brake rotors have been their speciality for the past 20 years and they're track tested...For the price of pads I might just give em a try.

Give mikey motor mmr rotors a try. Locally owned locally manufactured and inexpensive as well.
