Windows 7 vs Windows 8

I'm still debating switching over to Windows 8 or keeping Windows 7........

Windows 8 does seem like a scam ("oooooooh, an "APP Screen" but it's really just a shortcut screen that replaces the start menu. Want Netflix? It just opens explorer and takes you to the website). Also, it has no DVD playback compatibility unless you buy the $15 media pack add-on.

Windows 7 is my favourite so far, but I want something new. Windows 8 could grow on me, but worth the extra hastle for things I want?

Any owners/opinions about Windows 8?

No. It's gawd-awful. Even if you lock the main interface to the Win7 style interface, it's not complete and it's not going to stop trying to throw the second largely different interface at you, which is jarring and (imho) ridiculous to use.

Win8 is a complete failure in every sense but use on a tablet. And there it's mostly overpriced, irrelevent and not compatible with Active Directory, which was the only real draw of using Windows on a tablet.

Only real fanboys (and fangirls) like Windows 8. Any positives you hear out of the computer journals, you want to remember that Microsoft spends a lot of advertising money with them... and there's been plenty said that's negative, despite that.

Well, I'm not concerned about the price... wink nudge

I did like it on the tablet better than on a PC when I played with it in stores. I actually haven't read any proper reviews about this. I have seen a lot of "let's compare the different version and see which is better for you" articles, but not one that explicitly says this is good and this is bad. Just "this version has that, and that version has this".

Thanks for the input. I think I'll keep W7 on the new laptop and play with W8 on the older one, if I absolutely hate it I'll clear it out and back to W7 before I give the old one to my Dad.

every other version of windows sucks...

XP was good (ran it until I got 7)
Vista sucked
7 is good
8 sucks (from what I hear)

anything before that I was too young to know what's good...

You'd better have a "windows key" on the laptop, or you won't be able to launch programs. There's no "start menu" anymore, although you can get the start screen if you know the magic mouse wave. :/

I just read that the user manual, that's a weird feature... the biggest fail of that is that pressing the windows key again doesn't bring you back to the desktop. You have to find the "Desktop" application shortcut in that ocean of weird-shaped "apps". Escape or Alt + F4 won't return you back either. Any other version of windows had windows key = start menu open, windows key again = start menu close (or use of escape/Alt+f4)

This is worse and worse the more I read into it lol. It looks like a great windows for tablets...... but terrible for PC

What is the most painfull is Windows Server 2012 has adopted the same screwed up interface :( This front end should have had some way to enable/disable it completely so if you have a touch screen your supported.

There is no reason to use Win8 right now unless you have a touch device, or just bored and want something to do. If I wanted to learn a new interface I would buy a mac, MS just gave me a reason to go that route :)

No, what's the most painful is that Microsoft IMMEDIATELY scrubbed the OEM and aftermarket distribution chains of Windows 2008 before they even had study materials, courses or even TechNet documentation available for Server 2012. And then IMMEDIATELY did the same with Win8.

Windows 8 is all about the Microsoft Store. It's about short-term profits. Nothing more.

Win8 is apparently slightly more efficient with CPU resources. Allegedly. Its only redeeming feature that I can determine is that it supports the new CIFS 3.0 network file protocols, which can be pretty cool / interesting. However, that functionality is totally uninteresting to anyone not building global wide area networks.

I use Win 8. and LOVE it. Once you get used to not having a "start button", it's great.

I have setup my main screen to the main "apps/websites" i frequent. So at any given time, i can just hit my home screen and go there.

For example, my main screen has an icon for Pictures, Music, My docs, Adobe suite, some website fav's, etc.

I use my PC mainly for Internet browsing / editing pictures / Music. Thats about it.

You know that you can do those same things very easily with Win7, right? Just sayin'.

That is what shortcuts are for....

I went to BB to play around with it some more, I dislike it. I'll stick with Win7 Ultimate *says in booming voice*

Laptop came with Home Premium 64 (which is compatible with the 16gb ram max the laptop has) so no real point to upgrade just yet because of the options/abilities that I'll likely never use.

Windows 8 is garbage. The missus has a new laptop with it on and its a pain in the *** to use and everything takes longer to accomplish. Stick with win 7 and you wont regret it.

Same thing happened to my fiance's sister, she just returned the laptop altogether and did what I did: get a deal on a good computer still running Win7 :p

I've only played with Win 8 in-store but I have to agree that I don't care for it outside of a tablet or media-specific application. I find it to be very unintuitive and the push to metro annoying. I might install it on the media center to play around with but my other machines will stay on Win 7.

I have been using Windows 8 on my laptop now for about 2 weeks - I freaking love it. I also have windows 7 on my laptop at work and windows 8 is so much better.

I find the UI very friendly, I am able to have many apps open a the same time and toggle between them without having to reopen each one over and over again

Some of the apps are very well put together, (i.e. facebook), they are true apps and not just links to the website.

I also find that everything just works! the email connectivity to all my various emails was seamless. Also once oyu turn the laptop on, everything is available right away (like an apple notebook), I hate how on windows 7 you have to wait until the damn thing comes on line

If you are a frequent tablet user and are used to that type of user interface, you will really enjoy windows 8

It takes a couple of days to get used to but is worth it. This will be the way to go for the future, I hated it for the first couple of days, but now that i learn how to use it effectively, I think is awesome

and more importantly, the laptop runs so much faster, it uses the resources so much better

Want something new, fully supports everything and it's just plain awesome?

Get a f***ing Mac.

This is where the fanboi arguments come in. "But Windows 8 can run more than one app at a time!"

I call B.S. on ZX-600, as usual. Win8 does not use dramatically less resources. Go see for yourself, objective testing says it doesn't. The end.

There is nothing (NOTHING) stopping anyone running many apps on Win7 and you can just hit a key and get a quick and dirty show of all the apps currently running using a keypress, or go down to the toolbar and select them if you don't care. If you don't know how in Win7, that doesn't mean the feature isn't there. Win8 is just not easier or faster - not understanding how to use Win7 doesn't get trumped by learning how to use Win8...

jc100: Apple actually says that they did a user study on touchscreens and came up with the judgement that it's a useless feature for desktop or laptop users. But if it catches on with Win8 at all, expect them to come out swinging with products. ;)

I hate defending Windows. I'm a Linux guy for 15 years. :(
