Riding Jeans with CE armor and hip protection?

Which draggin jeans did you have? I saw another pair in the denim style but they were a stretchy one but still too tight for my taste. They were literally hugging my quads like skinny jeans...a bit too much for my liking. The Oilskins are a nice straight fit without the stretch and made of a heavy duty black cargo type cotton material.

I have the Cargo khaki. They are VERY comfortable, to the extent I actually wear them even when not riding. I find them awesome for plane flights, the extra pockets hold passport etc perfectly and they are comfortable to sit in.

Where's a good place, and a good MX knee guard to buy? I've been looking but don't want to spend more than $50. I was thinking Thor (but I can't find it). I wear sidi race boots though so they have to fit with those on.

I had researched shin/knee guards early this year, looking for specific features...I wanted something that had good coverage over the knee (above the knee and both sides).
I wanted something that bent with the knee but also have a shin part that wasn't too long. (that would interfere with boot). And if possible, fit under regular jeans.

I considered the MX guards, but they were too big to fit under regular jeans... and the smaller knee guards, like the KNOX Cross Knee Guards seemed like they only covered the front of the knee.

This pair from Thor seemed to have all those features I was looking for, and I was able to find them at GP bikes for about $30.

The coverage is good when first strapped in, but they slide down when riding. This could be because the top straps wrap around the calf, and so will naturally slide down with movement.
If I were to strap them higher (right behind the knee) then the knee part of the guard would sit too high, and the top part of the guard would stick out when the knee is bent (yeah I know, kind of hard to describe)

The guard is 2 pieces, and looks like it would articulate with your knee, but it doesn't...the 'joint' is positioned below the knee, so it doesn't bend with my knee.
(unless I'm wearing them incorrectly)

BTW, I am able to fit them under regular jeans(tight at first, but the jeans stretched a bit)
Also,I'm thinking of adding a third strap to the top articulated part of the guard, so that maybe it'll hold in place better.

Overall, they're alright ...and for $30, if they're not to you're liking...you can always get something else, without feeling like you wasted a lot.

I ride with those exact same guards. I guess you don't wear boots cause when they're tucked into my A* boots they don't shift at all. I like to wear them on the high side where they do protrude above my knee and the articulating part actually works. I think this is the proper way to wear them cause in the event of a crash, it would seem to give better coverage on the knees.

OP I wear these, tough as nails with Knox hip protection built in. You can get the Knox shin armour built in as well but I feel more secure with my shin/knee protection strapped on.

The knee protection will never stay in place. Especially in a slide. Either get MX style knee armor or you can get armored underpants that have all the armor built in and keep it tight to your body. Like those vests and shirts that are meant to be worn under jackets (but people seem to think it's cool to wear them without the jacket).

I wear these under my riding jeans and they fit under the jeans ok (kind of hard to put on without taking off your pants but doable). The straps are kind of overly long but that would solve the problem someone mentioned above about the armor not fitting if you have calves. You'd have to have massive legs for the straps to not fit you. http://www.motorcyclegear.com/stree...lpinestars/reflex_motorcycle_knee_guards.html

I just found this site the other day and there are a ton of pant options including jeans: http://www.compacc.com/index.cfm

Food for thought: how often does someone land on their knees when they crash? Not too often. How often do they end up on their back and bum? Most of the time. Abrasion resistance is most important for those areas. Regardless of what those riding jeans are made of, they still lack abrasion resistance compared to leather. But it's your choice.

Meh. Crashed twice. Once landed on my hip, the other time flat on my back.

Basing advise on the importance of knee protection off of two crashes. Meh. ;)

I've only ever crashed once on the asphalt, messed my knee up for a year. I was in full leathers.

And you've crashed how many times? ;)

Twice. Highside, hurt wrist. Low side, hurt knee. Neither was serious, thankfully.
But that is not my point. What I meant is don't think just because you didn't have a knee injury in your two cases, that it's not likely to happen.

Go to www.ebay.ca and do a search for REFLEX RACING 330084 Knee/Shin GUARD-DH/Protector/msr/armor/TKR

Those are $54 plus S&H and I am considering them

@ inyaknow.... yeah, I wear a pair of docs (8 hole) so they don't hold the shin/knee guards up....I'm looking for a pair of boots now, so hopefully they'll prevent the knee guards from sliding down.

@ MarcosSantiago...I considered those Reflex guards also, but couldn't find them locally...and they seemed like they wouldn't fit under jeans, although it looks to have good coverage.

before I bought the Thor guards, when I was researching....I found the Alpinestars Bionic SX Knee Protector, which seemed to fit all my requirements (however they weren't available then)
looks like they're available now, (expensive though at $140)....A* also has another knee guard that looks similiar (with less coverage) but much cheaper called the Vapor.

BTW, earlier in the year when I was looking for knee guards... I was also researching riding jeans with the Kevlar on the knee and backside area....but I couldn't decide on which pair to get.
However, I did come across "Draggin Liners" which is basically a Kevlar long john. http://www.dragginjeans.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=DLINERS

I'm not sure how abrasion resistant wearing this Liner along with regular jeans would be, compared to "Motorcycle Jeans" with the Kevlar already in the knee and backside area.
I'm guessing the denim in regular jeans is not as resistant as in the denim in "Motorcycle jeans"...but assuming the denim in both types of jeans would wear through in a slide
(probably wear faster in the regular jeans) I like the idea that the Liner covers much more of the lower body with Kevlar.

Although, I rode this past season without the Liner, I'm considering getting them again....but as I started reading up on them again...I came across another pair of Kevlar long johns.
I'm not sure of the history of Draggin Jeans...but this other pair is either from the Australian sister company (or Australian competitor?)...BTW, they're $100 more expensive.
http://www.dragginjeans.net/product/k-legs

I'll probably get the yellow one from Draggin Jeans (USA)...does anyone have any experience with either Kevlar Liner/long johns?

i have these black cargo pants.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mens-Cargo-...thing&var=&hash=item5f7c9117fd#ht_3371wt_1393
The seller is in the UK- they were $90 Can- shipping included....didn't get hit with any other fees. Compare to the $135+tax ones i was thinking of getting at Royal.
Bonus- these came with removable knee and hip protectors.
Like Corsara mentioned though- the knee guards don't really stay in place that well when you are off the bike.

Hey these look good

can wear them in Australia as well... good tip. Might just order a pair today.

My cheapo mx knee guards stay on fine with the adjustable velcro but my kid has more expensive ones that really cover and stay snug.

I agree - you look knobby knee on the bike but I think it is the proper way.

I agree with you. My point is that the butt and back is often overlooked when it comes to protection and in so many cases downed riders end up landing on and sliding on those areas. Perhaps your knee or hip may take the initial impact, but the slide is where all the rash injury occurs. E.g., a buddy of mine is paralyzed from the waist down from such a slide. Burned through his jeans and through his tailbone. :(

As a gay man this terrifies me.

I agree with everyone who recommends the Draggin Jeans - I have them with the Knox under armour.

I have the velocity cargo pants, draggin jeans, and hood jeans. My ranking - hood, velocity, draggin.
