Intelligent Transportation Systems? Really?! Really??? In Toronto??? Our traffic lights work like crap, there is no system behind them. Even small towns in Europe have proper green lanes (i.e. you drive given speed, say 60, you will always hit green light). Here in Toronto, you get green, and the light 200m down the road (for the condo, which just got built) turns red in your face. Same for next 4-5 lights. I wonder what they do at that Intelligent Centre. What a joke.

Probably some outside lane hogger who spilled their coffee and dropped their cell phone when they saw the hooligans doing the wheelies. They probably then proceeded to cut across 3 lanes of traffic without checking their blindspots or indicating to go running to the policeman like a little *****.
This coming from the biggest hypocrite on the boards that I personally know (Pearlzzzz).

We have about 3000 people, all trying to get off the base at the same time at the end of the day. 2/3 are going through one of the only 2 ways out. It's just a normal 2 lane road through the center of town. So it's well over 1000 cars all at the same time. The problem isn't the amount of people, as everyone up there does the "zipper" effect and it WORKS. The issue is all the lights in town (all 3 of them) and the way they are timed. If they were timed green for longer, for those going in the direction off base, congestion would be brought down. The way the roads are laid out, you could still get around for those people going perpendicular to the off base traffic.
If you think your traffic sucks, I have to wait until 4:30 every day (over an hour after I'm off work) to leave the base or I sit in traffic for 45 mintues to go about 6 km. If they would just time the lights appropriately, everyone would be moved and off the roads in 30 minutes.

Yep. I spend my early 20's driving truck. I learned so much about traffic patterns and behavior because of it. I can read what move someone is about to do before they signal or make the actual move just by the way they approach. However, people still surprise me with their stupidity.
uhm... you STOP. You make sure that YOU cover YOUR *** for YOUR liability. Make sure you're not going to run over grandma crossing the street, or stick the nose of your car out and have it ripped off by a bus. If the guy behind you hits you, it becomes HIS issue and HIS insurance.
Not saying don't be a defensive driver, but don't drive like an idiot for other people.
I got rear ended on the 401. I managed to stop in time for stopped traffic, and saw the idiot behind me not going to stop in time. I made sure that I had space in front of me for when he hit me (which he did) that I wouldn't be pushed to the car in front of me, making me also guilty of following too close.

in theory or in practice? never heard of anyone actually getting jail time for 172.
It doesn't sound like it'd be terribly difficult to make such a change happen in a metropolis the size of Petawawa... write some letters.

and for the record, 172 wasn't about cash. It was to address a perceived flaw in the justice system whereby there is no way to get a driver off the street pending a serious driving charge.
It is this perceived flaw ( that is sometimes legitimate ) that lead to the administrative suspension for 0.05 BAC.

It was moral panic after that cab driver was killed on mount pleasant by a couple of kids racing. Were the kids going too fast, certainly. Do cab drivers roll into intersections, a lot. The prosecutors framed it as a rich justice vs. poor justice thing, and the AG saw it as the moment to hop on the soap box and promote the street racing legislation while doing a huge favour for Il Duce Fantino (the Duke of Woodbridge), politically it was win-win. Same guy behind the pit bull ban. He's been in the news lately over an altercation in which a courier was killed.
It's like there is a bed-wetters lobby or something.

Actually it was a moral panic caused when a drunk driver ran a red in front of some teens going above the limit, but within reason, certainly not racing. It was presented as "street racers killed a family" - they sure learned their lesson from Tony and W on that one
Really? And if the 'snitch' helps find your, or your buddy's bike that gets stolen?
It's funny but the same people here that call out snitches and complain about people reporting to the police will be crying foul and for witnesses if their property gets damaged, stolen, etc. same goes for people bitching about the cops and then they need them because their stuff is messed with.
