last night 401 east

ok, this thread is long and i was too lazy to read it all so i apoligize if what i am about to say has already been mentioned.

I used to be one of those who thought that my time was more important and i ride up the shoulder of the highway but when my biike picked up a broken nail in my back tire about 5 years ago...and that same nail decided to leave my back tire as i was going down the DVP later the same evening causing a flat...at 130 kph...i learned my lesson

am i an angel now and follow every single rule of the road...hell no...i filter when i can, i ride ahead of the pace of traffic, my front wheel likes to explore the horizon once and a while and i love a fast corner...but i will say, it's a pretty good wake up call to have a tire go on you at speed (and a real good way to test your riding skill) which taught me that shoulders are far too dirty and full of crap for me to take the risk riding on...

ride safe all!

I'm discussing filtering, not riding on the shoulder.

But even on the shoulder, are you aware that a motorcycle is actually smaller than a car? A bike can maneuver easily out of the way. Cars can't.

Are you aware my bike can do 300? I can go way faster than all those cars on the road.
Doesn't make it right.

If you were presenting these arguments as part of properly researched and documented presentation to your MPP/city council, as part of education on the issue, and your push to make it legal - I would agree with you.
Right now, you are using it to justify illegal and highly anti-social behaviour.

Some people in this city believe sharia law is superior, and they lived all their lives by this law. So now as they moved to Canada, they believe it's OK for them to do things according to this law - even things that are illegal under Canadian constitution and are considered immoral in Canadian society.
Are you starting to understand what I'm getting at?

with the justifications on this forum, we should just rename the shoulder to diarrhea lane and I can drive on it in my car too.

That's not good enough. The government is taking taxpayer money and not doing enough. They should install portable washrooms on the shoulders in case of diarrhea. Explosive diarrhea is a real life emergency so really, it is legal use of the lane.

don't forget insulin stations too, all these diabetic riders passing out and smashing into people are a real concern these days

Self righteous law abiding citizens kills me. 3 seasons ago while I was stuck in traffic on my bike 5 cops on their bike riding on the shoulder of DVP then will merge once traffic was flowing then ride on the shoulders when it's stops. Looking back at it now I wonder what would've happened had I followed them on the shoulder. I mean how could they issue me a ticket when they're doing the same thing??

Nothing will happen. I was stuck on the DVP a few years back at night. There was some issue on the DVP. IT was not moving at all. I rolled up next to a cop car and asked him if I can go down the side to get off this road. He said go ahead and take it slow, last thing I want your bike breaking down and holding up traffic even more.

I'm not.
Can you please explain how it is anti-social behaviour, again ?

Ok, so you are standing in line for 2 hours at check in counter at the airport.
The AC is broken. There must about abut 400 people behind you. You frustration level is up, you got to pee, babies are crying, kids are causing a ruckus, flashing lights and noise everywhere and that person behind you keeps popping their chewing gum, the person in front of you does not use deodorant AND just when you could not take it anymore some person comes whizzing by you on a scooter to the front of the line.

* I just made all that up for the hell of it, it has no meaning.:D
Carry on, next stop Baptism for you, bring your nose plugs.
Oh btw, do you like Kool Aid.

i know you're probably just being facetious but I think his point is that these scenarios of "line jumping" do not apply at all to riding on the shoulder... If you rode the shoulder to jump in front of a line of cars waiting to pass through a customs or toll booth - then you'd have a valid point

I guess I should elaborate here a little..I do ride with the acknowledgment of how my actions on the bike are perceived by other road users. And when I say anything that supports lane filtering, I did elaborate further in another thread, that there is a pretty important caveat..being that filtering should be done with respect to speed differentials, and I would only support filtering at a 5- 10 - 15 kph speed differential and of course in some circumstances, due to the type of congestion you're in, maybe you should stay put.

Too many guys filter at 50 - 60 kph and often a lot more...that is just asking for something bad to happen, and no other responsible road user, no matter how open-minded they may be, are gonna be ****** if you do that.

This I like.

Awesome. Another full on retard analogy. Lol

The Question comes down to this:

If it was not against the law would those of you complaining still complain? Would you join in and Actually filter and lane split or still sit around and complain how those doing it are jumping the line even though it is legal?

And a follow up then, it will never happen if we sit around and do nothing, laws only change when people work to get them changed, if you are not part of the solution then you really have nothing to complain about in the first place.

I've said it many times before and I've said it again, just a couple of days back. If lane splitting became legal I would certainly do it, but not for at least 2 years after it became legal. I'd rather not be the statistic who gets taken out by drivers, who aren't used to it yet.

I agree that it would take many people awhile to get used to it and get over the typical road rage they might have at the start.

Both of you are very optimistic with awhile and two yrs forecasting.

Root cause of many problems encountered on our roadways is the ease of obtaining both a car and bike licence, our tests are far too weak.

Besides, careless operators aren't just going to wake up one day and start paying more attention to checking blind spots, texting on their phones etc etc.

No, they aren't, and a concerted effort needs to be made to start enforcing traffic laws other than simple speeding. There's far more dangerous behaviour that that, that I see on a daily basis. For example using merge lanes and the breakdown lane to pass, running cold amber lights, and failure to signal turns/lane changes. That all needs to be cleaned up, in order to make riders more safe.

So you are saying that you believe our licencing testing standards/requirements that we have right now currently are adequate?

In comparison to what? They are deffenitly more difficult than those in the US to include California where filtering/splitting is allowed and done safely.

+1 I'm having a hard time believing that some of these drivers are able to tie shoelaces let alone drive.
