Bikes Being Stolen From Condo Undergrounds.... Easy Solutions
Who are the idiots who design these condos and are in charge of them? It's easy to stop the thefts. It's simple;
1. Have a bar cage in one corner of the underground just for bikes, only the owners of the bikes will have a magnetic plastic card to open the door and a system will know exactly what card opened the door at what hour.
2. Have one of those $9 an hour security guards at the entrance of the entire garage and whenever he sees a minivan/van/truck enter the underground make him show his driver's licence and write it down on a piece of paper, and make sure to look inside the van when the stranger goes out. All the stories of the condo thefts in this forum mention that there was "security" at the building and cameras, who was the idiot that was supposed to be watching the cameras? For pete's sakes in another thread it took 3 bozos about 2 minutes to load a bike to a trailer, who was watching THAT camera?
3. Simply allow the parking of the bikes in the front lawn, in front of the glass entrance, with a chain and an alarm, surely the security guard reading the Toronto Sun at the desk will hear the alarm and scare the thieves away.
I was told to park my motorcycle in the underground parking lot about 6 years ago by my landlords, I told them to go screw themselves, no way after they broke into my car 3 times, and other numerous bikes stolen as well. I parked it in my balcony (live in the first floor, the balcony is not enclosed) and sometimes I would bring it inside the apartment. Now that I have a new bike I leave it outside my balcony too but with a booby trapped alarm. I took apart this contact alarm and modified it. As soon as my bike is pulled away a little wire under the tire will break loose from a plate and a 130 db alarm will go off in MY BEDROOM (Ran the wires from the balcony to my bedroom). A lot of guys mocked me here because of that, let's see who makes fun of who, my bike is virtually theft-proof now at night when it matters the most, in the daytime everybody is here and it is still locked to a BBQ and 3 bicycles. The chances of an idiot coming and cutting off the chains in front of my glass sliding door with my family looking at them is from 1% to 0%.
