Bikes Being Stolen From Condo Undergrounds.... Easy Solutions

Who are the idiots who design these condos and are in charge of them? It's easy to stop the thefts. It's simple;

1. Have a bar cage in one corner of the underground just for bikes, only the owners of the bikes will have a magnetic plastic card to open the door and a system will know exactly what card opened the door at what hour.

2. Have one of those $9 an hour security guards at the entrance of the entire garage and whenever he sees a minivan/van/truck enter the underground make him show his driver's licence and write it down on a piece of paper, and make sure to look inside the van when the stranger goes out. All the stories of the condo thefts in this forum mention that there was "security" at the building and cameras, who was the idiot that was supposed to be watching the cameras? For pete's sakes in another thread it took 3 bozos about 2 minutes to load a bike to a trailer, who was watching THAT camera?

3. Simply allow the parking of the bikes in the front lawn, in front of the glass entrance, with a chain and an alarm, surely the security guard reading the Toronto Sun at the desk will hear the alarm and scare the thieves away.

I was told to park my motorcycle in the underground parking lot about 6 years ago by my landlords, I told them to go screw themselves, no way after they broke into my car 3 times, and other numerous bikes stolen as well. I parked it in my balcony (live in the first floor, the balcony is not enclosed) and sometimes I would bring it inside the apartment. Now that I have a new bike I leave it outside my balcony too but with a booby trapped alarm. I took apart this contact alarm and modified it. As soon as my bike is pulled away a little wire under the tire will break loose from a plate and a 130 db alarm will go off in MY BEDROOM (Ran the wires from the balcony to my bedroom). A lot of guys mocked me here because of that, let's see who makes fun of who, my bike is virtually theft-proof now at night when it matters the most, in the daytime everybody is here and it is still locked to a BBQ and 3 bicycles. The chances of an idiot coming and cutting off the chains in front of my glass sliding door with my family looking at them is from 1% to 0%.

What about the ghetto condos/apartments? Hiring a security guard would mean a rent increase that the whole tenant base would have to absorb that the average tenant may not be able to manage. Simple solution: if you don't want your bike stolen from an underground parking garage, A) don't park there, or b) ride a bike that isn't desirable for thieves.

Condo developers don't even factor in motorcycles when designing and planning their buildings. You really think any of them would appease bikers with those suggestions?

You put the 130dB alarm in your bedroom?! I hope you have rubber bed sheets because if that thing goes off, you're gonna make a mess

I don't worry much, because my bike isn't desirable at all to thieves... and my parking spot is so far underground that you have to reenact most of the movie "The Descent" just to get to it

So the alarm goes off at 3 am, you run out with a golf club in your looney toon's boxers only to walk right into 2 guys, one with a glock and the other with a machete....let me know how that works out for you there tough guy.

1.feasible, logical and relatively cheap low maintenance.
2.minimum wage is over 10$/h, and the contracting compan charges between 25-40 per hour but for arguments sake. 25$ x 24 hours x 365days a year is $ 219 000 a year. the condo will then turn around and charge a premium for operational costs and tack it on to everyones fees pissing off 90% of tennants who don't own a bike.
3.not everyone shares a hardon for bikes. most places want to look presentable and safe. last thing they want is 10 guys in leathers hanging out on a friday night.

Wait a minute, who told you that the security guard will only watch the bikes? He'll watch the entire parking lot, cars included. Also don't all these condos are ALREADY paying a security guard anyways?

Yeah right......

No. The average minimum wage security guard doesn't give a crap about the cars in the garage. I know in my building there are SIGNS indicating there are guards and dogs, but in the whole 7 years living here, I've seen a guard 3 times. Never with a dog, and certainly never anyone I would be afraid of if I were a criminal.

[h=2]So I Deviced A Fail-Proof Alarm For My New Bike[/h] I was thinking of getting the Xena disc lock but this thing will not wake me up from my sleep even if it goes off, the alarm has to go through a brick wall and 2 doors to reach my bedroom. So I bought a cable lock with an alarm fro $40 that goes off when the cable is cut. But I have modified it and added a longer wire and added a metal plate to the mix.

This is how it works, the alarm goes off (120 db) when the cable breaks contact. I have run the cable just outside my door and connected it to my bike's front tire. When somebody moves my bike, and ONLY when it's moved, the alarm will go off, not outside but right inside my house. I have set up the alarm inside my bedroom to ensure I am awakened and believe me I will BE awakened, with the cables running 30-ft outside.

I'm curious as to how the loudness of this alarm system has increased by 10db since we first heard about it a few weeks ago.

I thought you deviced a foolproof system already.

Honest piece of advice here.

Set off the alarm out on the balcony, then walk inside and try to get as close as you can to your bed without covering your ears. Then adjust the volume down to whatever you use to wake up in the morning.

Your hearing is worth more than your bike.

Xena lock??? a giant amazonian lesbian wearing kinky leathers who stands guard beside your bike, ready to take off the head of any potential thief with her chakram? I think she would cost more than a security guard..

HAHAHAHAHAH booby hahahahhahaha

hahaha, chuckle chuckle chuckle, you said booby too

but on a more serious note, the OP's idea of a cage with private access, could be a relatively inexpensive selling point to a developer having trouble moving some of these more luxury oriented condos (you know...the ones that aren't moving and are stuck in the bubble) who could then advertise in their pamphlets that they have real motorcycle security. It would have to be designed to be unmanned, to help eliminate crooked bought guards...or simply ones who value their lives..

Peg, I've come to realize in reading your many thoughtful posts that you indeed have the answers to everything. I think you should just go ahead and nominate yourself "leader of all sh*t n' stuff"

She's been out of work for a while, may not be that expensive.... she would definately distract the thief....

To the OP, just stop, if some one really wants your **** they will get it. End of story
