Does anyone pre-purchase parts known to break?

I'm debating on doing this.

I currently have a GS500F that I plan to ride for one more season (started last season), then give to my gf. The following things I think may break during the time that we both have the bike:

#1. Clutch cable
#2. Dash connector (my bike is not stock, I'd have to buy $500-$800 worth of **** to revert the handles and other things back to stock, but at least I won't be worried about my gf going "LOOK THE DASH FELL OFF AGAIN")
#3. Chain (17,000km, I don't think it's been changed)
#4. Sprockets, refer to chain.

So....yeah, does anyone prepurchase? Stupid idea or smart idea?

what??!!

And as per your question.....come by my place, you'll find enough spare parts to build two bikes...

I keep stuff that I know is a problem with the specific bike, like my Yamaha FJR1300 was known to have short lived igniton switches, so I picked on up on ebay for $25.00 and yes, six months later the ignition switched failed so instead of going to the dealer and paying full price and waiting a week, I had it fixed in 15 minutes. Other parts like brake pads, chains, tires and stuff, I buy on if I get if for a good price.

Hard to describe. But a few months back, my dash fell off. I had to get the metal plate that connected the dash wielded back together because that entire "connector" was custom made due to the clip on handle bars my bike has. Pain in the *** cause I'm scared it'll go poof again one day (or maybe I can just ride without a dashboard).

1.) I would not expect a clutch cable to snap after 17,000 km, however they can be good to have on hand, they are usually not expensive. Make sure its lubed well.
2.) odd, doesn't sound like the root cause of the issue, you'd be surprised what zip ties can solve if your in a pinch. I'd look at securing the dash as a pre-emtive solutoin. I fiberglassed an entire fairing stay for half a season, it can be your friend.
3.) You can measure the chain stretch. If you thinking it is getting near braking, or looks tired, just replace it today, preventative maintenance is always your best bet. You do not want to have a chain break while your riding. I wouldn't carry a spare "just incase" unless your racing.
4.) change these with your chain, but typically any pitting/wear on the teeth is evident. Look at an image of a new sproket/teeth and compare. Again, wouldn't carry spares for this

My clutch cable snapped on me at around 14,500 =(

Now I just dump **** tons of lube onto it lol

i generally order tires, chain, sprockets, pads etc. when the others are nearing the end of their assumed life. these parts are generally not hard to get.

most of the other things you don't anticipate them crapping out.

Don't get too far ahead with parts. I still have parts sitting around from bikes I no longer have because I thought like you. ie. If you know you need a chain and sprockets in the next few thousand km, start looking around, but don't buy 3 sets because you got them for a great price, you will probably get rid of the bike before you wear out 3 sets.

PS If anyone wants a tank, hard bags, sprockets, rear brake pads or a couple other things for a 2003 Aprilia Caponord send me a message.

I've been contemplating the same thing myself lately...
The GSX-R's are known to have stator/rectifier issues, according to some members on gixxer.com, some have even caught fire.
Thinking of replacing them now before I run into the same problem.
Haven't bought the parts yet though, still debating.

yes i carry a cache of spare parts for my bikes ...

I have spare frames/subframes/motor internals/electrical parts/clutches/hard parts etc.......I keep my bikes for a LONG time. and Break a lot of stuff along the way.

Also, I dont think twice about going to the drag strip come TEST/TUNE day....go thrash on my bike ...if I break something I fix it and am on my way the next day.

It sounds like someone isn't doing preventative maintenance.

when my r/r failed just before a long weekend i ordered 2, one good one from rmstator & a cheap chinese one off ebay. i'm set to keep riding next time it happens (and i know it happened before because the one i replaced wasn't stock)
What bike?

Sometimes extra tires, oil and filters. (if I get a good deal)
.
Everything else I order as I need it. Parts for a GS500 are not hard to source.

An OEM stator is like $400 and a OEM rectifier is like $150-200....Do you really want to spend that kind of money until your sure you need too?

Well, I heard the stator goes if the R/R is toast.
If I do replace it, I was thinking of going with a Mosfet kit... I won't be changing the stator if it's still fine and dandy.
Thoughts?

simply put, you heard wrong.

each individual component has it's own test procedure with pass fail parameters. Just cause one failed, does not mean with any certainty at all that the other failed. - this is why you test and confirm the failure, before throwing parts at a problem.

Ive changed many RR's without the stator needing to be changed, so needing both at the same time is not a must in all situations...If I were you Id have their output tested before I start dropping money on parts you might not need...

Thanks for clearing that up, I appreciate your input.

I'll mention it the next time I come see you...
