The ICON BP Phenomenon

Your post is about "what other people wear when they ride"... I thought I caught on to that part pretty well.

We all know you're trying to say "Why just a BP?" and trying to validate that statment further with "... LOOSELY SLUNG OVER THEIR SHOULDERS, WITH IT UNDONE AROUND THEIR WAIST..." for effect. All I'm saying is.... "yep, still in the realm of useless."

However, the irony of your "negativity" statement brings this thread right back into play... strictly for entertainment value.

Yeah, all women should be ATGATT. Chicks dig battle scars... not so sure it works both ways. Just saying.

There are far too many people on this forum who are either way too sensitive, or just plain insulting. I wonder, do you talk to co-workers like that? How about family? I'm not sure how people get through life like that. If anything, I should pity you. From the sounds of it, you have a very stressful and miserable life. Sorry for that, dood. I hope things look better for you in the future.

OP, have you noticed that anyone who contradicts your opinion, you seem to try and get personal with them??

Your last post is getting into the realm of pure ridiculousness.

Not at all. Dude is being insulting. I.e., chicks dig scars, but since I am a chick, I should wear gear because it doesn't go the other way around. But it does seem there are a lot of really sensitive people on this forum who are looking for things, and people, to flame.

My bad... I just skimmed the whole thread and noticed you were the only one using bold text. ;) I kid, I kid...

The battle scars comment, fair enough in regards to your response. Knowing your gender makes a difference after the re-read.

I don't talk to anyone like that, but people don't typically say "You're an idiot because you wear one one of these like this without that" to me. That's prety much what you said...on a public forum. I thought that was uncalled for, but I respect your right to be allowed to say it and so... what else was going to happen? I'm responding to a thread you started.

If you weren't volunteering your gender type to tell me why it's important why you're the ATGATT type, why bring it up at all? None-the-less, it doesn't surprise me that I don't at all understand why my statement upset you... so I'll do what we all do: nod our heads, apologize and hope you don't ask us if we know what we're apologizing for. "Sorry." :(

C'mon, enough is enough.

Stormcat announces she's a chick, and you all back off lol. What's the expression?..."the man is the head of the house, but the woman is the neck."

The BP's are for stunters. Stunters typically fall off at very low speeds, so gloves, elbow pads, the BP, and padded jeans seem to be enough gear to keep them safe. They [the stunters] aren't cruising, so they don't have any air flow to cool them down, hence they could very well pass out from heat stroke with a lid on. The BP's have little to no use in riding at speed unless your off is lucky enough to have you gliding across the pavement backside down. Bottom line, street riders have jacked this "stunter gear" look as a street fashion statement.

Stormcat is from a much friendlier place than Toronto where everyone hates everyone and everything. Go easy on her. That's an order! :-)

My buddy squids it with just a BP and a t-shirt. He went down infront of me last year. He skidded on his back and came out of it without any rash. Broken thumb, but the BP saved his back. It was tightened properly.

Lets face some facts here though.
1. It is very little protection but does provide some.
2. It is also a fashion statement.
3. People who swear by ATGATT will always rant.

I wear one over a t-shirt occasionally, but only to stop my t-shirt from flying up my back. Does that make me a squid? Maybe, but I ride differently/ride for different purposes when I squid.

Some people need to care less.

Sounds like the back protector didn't save his life; it saved him some skin. It was also by a fluke.

Didn't say it saved his life. Saved his back. Fluke or not, point is that it was there and it worked. But this is off topic I guess cuz it was done up properly.

The guys riding with the Icon T-shirt retention devices always drive with their high beams on, and pull up beside me in my lane at lights.

She's not talking about people who wear a back protector, she's talking about people who don't have it fastened properly so it wouldn't stay in place in the event of a crash. In other words, if you are going to wear it, you might as well do it up.

There are just as many clueless people in this thread as there are clueless cagers on the road.

For me those ICON back protectors have the same effect as cruiser guys wearing leather vests. There is functionality there but its mostly for style if wearing the BP alone. Thats what I think anyway.

If you have an accident that is violent and bad enough to break your back, I seriously doubt an ICON BP will prevent it. If you just take a slide on your back, then yeah maybe the BP will save your back some damage but so would a jacket or even just a plain old backpack. I went for a slide on my back and my backpack took most of the damage with only a few scuffs on the lower part of my jacket.

I went down wearing the ICON FIELD ARMOUR VEST. Thank goodness it was only a tiny lowside around a right turn going about 40km due to slippery pavement, but that Vest saved my chest from being scratched up and tearing up my shirt. I only had light abrasion on my right forearm but nothing to complain about. I'm glad I had that on at the least!

I see a lot of the Icon field armor and nothing else. I wonder the same thing about that too.

These guys might be in worse shape, the the Field Armor vests aren't CE approved where the BP is...

.. but in the context of this thread, it looks to me like the vests stand a better change of staying on. I've never crash tested either, but I have crash tested the A* vest with a A* CE back protector in it. For that particular crash, it was a HUGE pass... and it looks to be far lesssecure than the Field Armor vest.

I heard that Icon makes some pretty good gear.

There are basically two reasons why they wear it.

This;
It's to cover the back fat or to prevent the t-shirt from lifting up, thus exposing said back fat.

And this;
Squids wear them because they think it makes them look cool and hard, basically the same reason they bought bikes in the first place.

I have no problem with it, as long as they don't try and deny that it's all about style, race cred. Just like people who buy cruisers, that's fine it's their choice but don't try and tell me there's any practical reason for a cruiser, it's all about style too, it's nostalgia.

It's a fashion statement, lets move on. We all know its useless in an accident.

Its a way for people to see that you have a bike when you're walking around without your helmet.

They're just having fun, it's hardly offensive like poorly aimed HID lights or anything like that.
I talked to a kid at Horton's in Hamilton once wearing on, he admitted it was just for looks.

People gots ta chill.

She's ATGATT, bro. ATGATT!! You know what that means, bro? It means she's better than those squid chumps.

Gear nazis make me laugh. I'll kill myself before I wear a full leather suit with a backprotector on the street, and I've done my share of crashing both street and track. :confused1:

Does your car have a rollcage and a 5 point harness too? I drive mine around with a helmet at all times. Safety, folks! Think of the children!

People are like that everywhere. You ask for an explanation and it's like you're questioning their very existence.

Notice that nobody who backlashed against you made any attempt to explain why some riders wear only a BP, as if they never thought about it. No, it's "stop questionning, you're the problem".

People are idiots like that.
