Trick to triggering red lights

the solution to this is easy if its a 4 way intersection.

turn right, then do a u-turn.

;)

This thread comes up monthly if not weekly. The sensors are not weight sensitive, they are electromagnetic. You can get a magnet from an old hard drive and attach it to the bottom of you bike for an easy fix. I've heard it works better than the kickstand or the starter motor.

Better to say you're sorry than ask permission!

Solution if you care: Usng a plasit Tie down, attach a fair sized MAGNET to the bottom of your frame.

Magnets don't work unless your bike is 3 inches off the ground. As a test, take out a compass and approach it with a magnet. See how close you have to be for it to move the needle? And a compass is much more sensitive then the sensor in the road.

Illegal. You can't make a u-turn near an intersection.

It is based on a weight sensor. Anything over 800lbs will trig the loop and it will change. I have already contacted city hall to open a by-law allowing bikes to treat red likes as four-way stops like many other places around the world. I am still waiting for them to get back to me and once I have go go-ahead I will set up a petition form to get them to pass the by-law.

They are not weight sensors. Also, the HTA is Ontario wide. City Hall (of Toronto I assume) has no say on how vehicles treat red lights.

Just run the light... It's legal as long as you can prove the light is defective. Waiting 30+ seconds and the crosswalk light stiall hasn't changed and no cars went by is a good indication the light is malfunctioning.

I think my engine stops if I put the kickstand down. Just do a quick check in all directions and if there's nobody around, just go.

Not that I've ever done it myself:snorting:

It is illegal to get off the bike and push the button for the crosswalk.

you are better of getting off the bike, and pushing the button.. rather than running a red light :)

170. (1) No person shall park, stand or stop a vehicle on a roadway,
Which is all inapplicable when it comes to a vehicle that is already stopped for a red light. Also, nothing in that refers to "getting off the bike". If you can get off your bike and go over to a walk button without interfering with the movement of other traffic, and be back and ready to go when the light does turn green, you will not get ticketed.

Incorrect. U-turns can be made near an intersection if done safely, unless explicitly prohibited by a "No U-Turn" sign or presence of a raised curb or traffic median, or unless any of the following conditions are present, in which case you just go a bit further down the road.
143. No driver or operator of a vehicle upon a highway shall turn the vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction when,
(a) upon a curve where traffic approaching the vehicle from either direction cannot be seen by the driver of the vehicle within a distance of 150 metres;
(b) on a railway crossing or within 30 metres of a railway crossing;
(c) upon an approach to or near the crest of a grade where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching from either direction within 150 metres; or
(d) within 150 metres of a bridge, viaduct or tunnel where the driver’s view is obstructed within such distance. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 143.

Fine... You get a parking ticket then: If you leave your bike it's considered parking.

If you think you have some trick, and that it works everywhere, you have to actually test it on intersections that don't have a time-out. Pretty much anything you can do to to or on your bike will be partially effective, some of time.

Every lane, in every intersection, that senses traffic has to be calibrated to trigger correctly without false-positives, therefore every intersection is different. The three dots the city paints mark where the loop is, which you can usually tell by the cut-lines anyway, and indicate that the loop was at one time calibrated to trigger correctly (More Here)

If you want a particular intersection fixed, you have to report it.

encountered this situation for the first time finally myself

woodbine ave southbound at green lane

waited for 2 mins.. no traffic from any direction.

what i did is illegal im sure but it seemed like the best option at the time

i just rode up to the crosswalk button and pushed it while still on the bike :D

also, u-turns at intersections are NOT illegal unless marked with a sign

Technically, you're stopped, as in for a red light that prohibits further forward movement until it changes, and which won't do so until something triggers a change, as in you pushing the walk button. You won't be getting a parking ticket for that.

You could put a thousand pounds of cinder blocks on a loop sensor and it wouldn't trigger. Weight is immaterial. Light sensors use a magnetic induction loop, to sense the presence of ferrous metal. The induction loop is tuned to a certain frequency, that is compared to a base frequency using a circuit that is called (ironically enough) a comparator. The difference is read as an output voltage. When that voltage reaches a predetermined value, it triggers the lights. The level at which the lights are triggered is adjusted, by choosing at what voltage the light circuit is triggered.

Really good for cleaning sharp metal objects off of the roadway. No so much for triggering the sensors.

If you see 3 dots in the lane, stop on the dots. They are made for sensing bicycles. Otherwise stop on the outline of the loop.
If the sensor doesn't pick up your bike, call it in to the city so they can fix it.

Bull-Sh!!

You're "stopped" if you leave your vehicle and go for a walk? nice try.
