Follow Along: 600rr to California

+1 Good on you for taking the plunge and deciding to do the trip.

One question I have, though is: isn't it weird doing twisties with all that gear strapped on? I've always wondered if I could really enjoy them while having all of that on my bike. But then again, it'd probably still be fun riding at a 60% limit on twisties that nice vs. riding at 90% in gta?

:) I second the motion of welcoming him on the day of his return!

Great trip so far and awesome pics! Thank you for sharing and taking us along the way!!

Im at a cafe eating breakfast now.

I never knew how cold the desert could get at night. It must have been near freezing last night. My sleepin bag is rated for 0 degrees and i was damn cold.

Utah is a beautiful place. I finally got some warmth after getting out of the colorado mountains. It was nice to get rid of my rain gear and heated gloves. I got lots of nice pictures which i will sort through tonight. Oh , and you guys are going to be so jealous when i upload that video of the million dollar highway :D

What I am interested in knowing is if you remember or can keep track of the longest stretch of road with no gas stations is? What sort of range do you get on the CBR? I am wondering if there are any long stretches of service free roads on your trip?

There have been stops At least every 150kms where ive been so far. Havent had to use the jerry can yet. Ive heard nevada will be a bit different though

Which Spot did you get? The older or the newer model? How do you have it mounted? Where? How long the battery lasts? Is it running off of AA? How painful it is to handle? Remember to turn on, send an OK message, etc...

I guess you didn't see my question. Would you give me a brief insight to the magical world of Spot?
Thanks!

Wheelieboy, u won't happen to be interested in going to the East Coast when u get back would u?? I would be honoured to have someone of your experience on the trip.

Another question, how did u strap down that gas can? Does it sway back and forth when u ride?

Sorry, wont be able to this year. I start work when i get back from my trip. Maybe next year though.

The gas can is hooked onto my passenger footpeg and strapped down with a couple ofbungeecords

Sorry i missed your question. Lots of things on the go.

The unit is $120 and u have to subscribe to the service. Basic plan is $100/ yr which includes unlimited check ins and custommessag transmission. For $50 more u get the real time tracking service. The unit is waterproof.

I dont remeber which unit i got but itsthe small orange one. Itseasy to send messages and use but you have to read the instructions first as its not self explanitory.
It takes aaa lithium batteries and lasts 3.5 days of full use. I turn it off at night so i havent had to replace the batteries yet.

I dont really feel the weight of my gear when i ride. It takesup more space than anything and it forces me to sit right up against the gas tano which is a little uncomfortable sometimes.

In the gta, i ride at 80%. On my trip, the most ill ride at is 70%. I dont know the roads, many roads have sand, animals, cars crossing over the center line, cliffs that you do not want tofall off of. Its not worth the risk crashing just forthat extra little bit of thrill.

Thanks for the answer!

So you had to drop $120+$100+taxes to be able to entertain us with almost real time tracking? Or the first year's subscription was included in the $120?

The intention of getting the spot was to letmy family hAve a peace of mind. Also, a lot of places out heredont have cell reception you can use the sos feature on the SPOT and they will send help if youneed it regardless ofifthere is cell reception or notbecause it uses satillite

One cool device!

I am thinking of walking with a 1liter can of gas on my trip. I have the feeling I am gonna be doing it alone. I don't mind that, I think it will give me some alone time where I can reflect on life.

Be careful in the desert, from what I've heard, scorpions and snakes tend to find a warm body to snuggle up at night. Don't know how true that is tho.

I think he is using it as a safety device. If he goes missing at least his family has a tracking device on him and hundreds of GTAM members

Thats the device I would want if I plan an alone trip

There is a free app for the iPhone called GPS Tracker that does the same thing. I use it to track my wife when she walks the dog in the winter at 5:30 am for an hour or so. (I worry) I also keep it in my jacket vest pocket on motorcycle trips so family can follow me on a google map. Providing I am in a cell service area of course.

I have never had problems finding gas in Nevada. While the stations may be fewer on the side highways, they are rarely more than 150 km's apart (usually less than 100). The only exception to that was Wyoming, a rural stretch I went down had a sign no gas for 120 miles / 200 km's.

That's why I love my DL650. On average I can ride 400 kms and still have about 50-60 kms worth of gas to look for a gas station.

Totally agree with you. It is rare for me to fill up before 400 km's.

Google Latitude does it on any smart phone, but it's not the same thing as Spot because it doesn't work where there's no cell phone coverage and requires a data plan. You can use it through wi-fi, but that gives you even less coverage than cell network does.

Following your progress... it almost looks like you're bypassing Sin City. And that would be a shame.

But very well done! I'm sure your stretch today will be awesome.
