Organ donation in Ontario

So, I'm listening to the radio on my way into work this morning and I hear that 90 per cent of Ontarians say they support organ donation, yet only 17 per cent have registered their intent to donate.

Got me thinking, Do the people that have not registered only support the receiving end of the donation process? Why haven't they registered if they support donation?

Last week was Organ and Tissue awareness week, I didn't see much awareness happening in the media so I thought I'd bring up the topic here.
 
i have been an organ donor since i got my g1m1 at 16...when i die my wishes are to be burned anyways so whats a couple missing organs. personally i think lots of people support it but are too lazy to fill out the forms when they go and renew their health card, and remember that there are still lots of people floating around with the old red and white health cards that never expire so to them why go stand in a line for 30mins+ to fill out some forms...and risk that the ministry might tell you them they have to change health cards. dont know if thats the case just an argument for them peeps ;)

now if they told everyone that by january 2012 you had to get a new health card there would be more then 17% organ donors...and you would have the fools saying the worlds gunna end so i dont need to get it, lol :D.

I've been a donor ever since I've had my G too.
 
Some easy instructions. Download, fill out and keep with your documents (preferably with your drivers license).

Firestart thanks for that link...I know a couple people with the old school health card my gf included so i know she would donate.
 
Various religious tenets prohibit the desecration of a body after death. Some do it because they see the body as the vessel of the spirit which much not be damaged, and others because it would hamper or even prevent the body from being able to enter into the afterlife.

Then there are those who won't sign a donor card because they simply refuse to entertain the possibility that they may die a premature death. Denial is a powerful motivator to do nothing.

On top of that there is a sizable part of the population who believe (in many cases rightfully) that they are not viable donor candidates because of old age (50+ is over the hill as far as most organ donation goes), HIV infection, hepatitis, syphilis, cancers, and other infectious or organ-wasting chronic diseases.

Long time donor. Losing value with passage of time. Giving plasma/plateletes in meantime.

I think 3 years of partying at Laurentian put more wear and tear on my eligibility than 3 decades of living, but I should still be good for something... There's bone marrow, skin, indestructible stomach and my liver should have recovered enough to be of some use :cool:
I've had mine signed before I even entertained the idea of riding a motorcycle and statistically, we do make the best donor material :D
 
I believe in organ donation and i want to donate my organs if i die, but i dont have the card filled out. My mom wouldnt let me fill it out when i turned 16 (she threw it away when my D/L came in the mail), and i always figured when i get my upgraded licences theyd send me another one, but they didnt. Thats why technically im not registered as an organ donor but i have told my family that if i die i do want my organs to be donated, so hopefully they will honor that if they have to.

As for why people dont do it, other than the reasons listed, some people are paranoid and believe that if EMT's see the organ donation card they will not try as hard to save someone. Its ridiculous, but some people believe it.

if she tossed it in the 1st place....chances she won't donate after you can't object. Besides, signed card or not...doesn't the family have final say?



My donor card is signed and more importantly, my family is aware of my wishes. That and I'm to be buried or cremated in my leathers. ATGATT :laughing8:

Trust me, I'm sure they'll put them to good use no mater how hard a life your organs have had.
 
I think a lot of people don't even think about it unless they're directly asked i.e. me, when I last renewed my health card.

So I've got the card in my wallet and believe I'm also listed as a donor on the computer database. I hope they don't expect to make any use of my liver, but everything else is still in good working order AFAIK.

Hence a signed donor card (with a couple of extra copies with the family) :cool:
