Zero Electric Sportbike

Then there is this....

While comparisons like that make for entertaining TV, putting any true racecar against a street car very very often has a similar result. If nothing else, the mclaren is carrying many hundreds of pounds of extra lights/wires/crash protection/seats/windows etc.

Want to kill Motorsports? Make it all electric.

can't happen soon enough. Noisy, polluting, banned in lots of cities.

Humans will race anything

It may or may not kill traditional tracks, but it will also open up a whole new world. Electric can race on indoor tracks or tracks very close to a city without needing a huge separation to deal with noise. Track days would be a lot more popular if you could wake up at home and drive less much less than an hour to get to the track.

Can you imagine the racket with a gas powered cart..

and indoor racing

I suspect some serious need for tire technology

It only took eight months to build, but Volkswagen’s I.D. R racer didn’t just destroy the all-electric record at Pikes Peak this last Sunday, it just set the fastest time ever during the race’s 100th anniversary.

The car – piloted by French driver Romain Dumas – was at the Colorado Springs, CO event to break the all-electric vehicle record, which it did by over minute. What was arguably even more impressive was the fact that it broke the all-time record set by rally legend Sebastian Loeb five years ago in a twin-turbo powered Peugeot 208T16 by 16 seconds, posting a 7:57.148 up the 156-turn 12.42mile hillclimb.

This dominance of Pikes Peak is yet another strong sign that electric racecars are the future of motorsport, with the popularity of Formula E growing ever stronger and World Rallycross announcing it’ll switch to all-electric vehicles in 2020.

Not to say, “I told you so”, but here at K1 Speed, we knew what we were getting into when we decided to use all-electric go-karts in our indoor karting center fifteen years ago. The instant torque the electric engine delivers eliminates any lag once your pedal hits the medal, so you can launch out of those technical corners rather than waiting for the engine to rev up. We were ahead of the time then and continue to utilize the latest electric go-karts moving into a very near future that is sure to feature more electrified grids in motorsport.

Although I understand the attraction to oldschool, reality is...technology is moving forward. The racers of tomorrow will care more about the fact they can accelerate like a scared cat more than they will bemoan the loss of the "good old roar of the engine and slamming gears". It will be looked upon as a technology of old which is better left in the past because, simply put, it's inferior.

At the moment, electric sport bikes can do one lap of the Isle of Man. That's it.

MotoE (at certain MotoGP events) doesn't do a warm-up lap, and the races are shorter, and they are roughly at a performance level between Moto2 and Moto3 but with much greater weight. And they sound like a bunch of vacuum cleaners circulating the track. And no gear shifting.

Electric is okay for daily-driver appliances, but it is not there for high performance applications. They can go fast, but not for very long, or they can go a decently long distance, but not very fast. The situation has been getting better and I expect it to continue to get better.

The lack of any sound, the lack of any gear shifting, etc might be okay for the people not involved in motorsports (e.g. disinterested neighbors who just want quiet) but even if you make them go fast (for a little while ...) it's just not interesting to watch. I'm a big WorldSBK and MotoGP fan. MotoE does nothing for me.

I understand that electric could be good for trail riding and so forth, where noise has been a big excuse that neighbors have used to shut down riding areas. I get that.

For the dirt bike and off-road people, are electric dirt bikes at a point where they can do a double or triple jump that 250/450 motocross bikes do?

Do deaf people not enjoy motorsports just because they can't hear the associated noise?

Alta Redshift mx bike was very legit. It’s been used at a professional level in one of non sanctioned events. Josh Hill rode one at red bull straight rythym and did well.

Unfortunately Alta went out of business but it was the one electric bike that IMO gave up nothing to the traditional competitors. WP suspension components, quality wheel set etc.

the Alta is the white bike on the far lane if curious how it did in a race setting. They were built to compete with 250 four strokes.

*Reading this thread wondering if I'm the only one around with a Zero* o_O
Someone else here has one. I like them in theory but I get annoyed when marketing gets way ahead of engineering. Be honest with what they are and aren't. They have some significant real advantages, strip all the bs out of the marketing as it just makes me ignore everything and assume you have polished a turd.

You're not the only one! What do you have? @Evoex speaks the truth, I'm on a DS. Two full riding seasons on and I still love it and have no interest in going back to gas!

FYI my two cents on the SR/S-it's the first Zero I don't like.

Haha I just have a boring old S (2018)
Love her to pieces though! Also got the Diginow Chargers, which is great \m/

I haven't seen it in person of course, but I think the SR/S looks pretty cool...Not sure if it looks better than the SR/F or not though. Kinda torn on that front. Still, I don't know how Zero is going to keep up with Energica with their lower voltage (non-DC-fast-charge-compatible) system

They’re unveiling the SR/S at the Montreal show this weekend if anybody’s up that way.
