your thoughts on perforated leather...

doesn't this lessen the leather's structural integrity with respect to it's function? i would just think that the perforations are putting more fail points or weakens the leather as opposed to a 'solid/non perforated' leather.

of course, the perforation increases airflow, breathability etc etc, but with respect to a crash or something, won't the perforated leather 'give' sooner than a non perforated/solid one? no?

your thoughts?

thanks.

I suppose it does in theory but that's the trade-off you make for greater comfort I guess. I don't know how much force and friction is required in a fall to make the difference appreciable but most jackets are only perf'd in low impact areas like the chest, biceps, underarms and sides. High impact areas like the elbows, shoulders and spine are typically non-perf.

+1 you pretty much summed it up.

Absolute necessity, I rock a perf leather jacket on 99% of my riding (textile on the 1%). I got hit and the leather worked and I went for a slide n roll and guess what... the leather worked.

As AF4iK says, the perf isnt in contact areas (except maybe the back).

I couldn't ride in the summer if it wasn't for my perforated leather pants. They also feel the most armoured pants I have too plus they are designed for racing so I'm pretty confident in them.

Don't the professional racers use perf in hot weather?

I have a RS Taichi perforated leather jacket. I believe that it's as crash-worthy as non-perforated leather but the issue for me is that it feels too cool in all but the warmest of weather. When I leave for my ride during the day it feels fine but by the time I get back home in the evening I'm freezing. Next time I won't get perforated leather.

All my gear is perforated - even boot soles and rain suit. Gives you best airflow and if it rains - water just drains.

I carry a thermal long sleeve with me its thin and fits under the seat no problem

You might also consider kevlar... it's breathable and by many accounts at least as strong as leather (also available in a mesh form). I got a custom-made jacket from Motoport (http://www.motoport.com/) which has held up well in a crash at a trackday, and is comfortable in 90+ celsius Texas heat.
