Your input - helmet headsets - what do you have

I'll give a big +1 to any Sena product. They know what they are doing and what their customers want.

OP I think a standard set of bluetooth buds or headphones will work for you but the advantage of going with a motorcycle-specific solution is being able to change tracks and volume with gloves on. The 3S looks like a good fit for you although I have never tried it. I personally own the SMH-5.

Can the Scala's be paired to non-Scala headsets? I'm in the market for one as well but need to communicate to Sena/etc.

Not sure but the Senaclaims to have universal compatibility so in theory it should work. I'm sure there's a caveat somewhere but maybe someone experienced with this aspect can comment.

Works up to 120km/h. Might not be too great on the hwy. Wonder if they will communicate with other brands also.

65$, so for 1/2 the cost of one cheap sena you possibly get 2

I was kidding of course. ;)

I looked extensively at the eBay / Amazon intercom specials I've the last few months. Reviews are highly mixed but the more I read the more it became evident that it's one of those "you get what you pay for" scenarios in the end.

I've been happy with the pair we have. On the 401 at "401" speeds it's not great for talking but works, however music works fine.

Is that the exact that you have? Good to hear....I'll refer some friends to them if your firsthand experience has been positive.

I'm currently experimenting with a set of bone conduction earpieces along with a set of GMRS radios. Haven't actually had an opportunity to ride with them yet but my experience so far is positive – I planned to do a write up about it all once I have some miles using them. Not really any good for listening to music and such as is the topic of OP's thread, just mentioning it - I'm really only interested in communication between riders.

I had a push to talk Chatterbox way back in the day. It was ok but used FRS bands so you had decent range.

I moved up to a Scala Rider when they first came out and found that I did not like the push button controls. I have XL sized gloves and they did not push well with the buttons.

I replaced that when the Sena unit came out and the rotary dial with gloves hands is MUCH easier to use then small push buttons. just 1 button on the back and knob / button combination on the side. works fantastic enough that when mine broke after 40k of riding I bought another one and have about 40k on this one and still going. I find the battery doesn't last a full day anymore after owning it for 2 or 3 years but I can listen to music, talk to friends while riding in a group (we had up to 5 of us chatting away crossing the prairies)

Ours are slightly different, but using the same "motorcycle bt interphone" name, from what I understand they use same tech, fm radio like gmrs/frs and a bt interface for phones/MP3/gps units that have Bluetooth interfaces.
This is the same form factor ours have http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=262253717249&globalID=EBAY-ENCA but I think they are all the same for the most part.
